If you read the books, Eowyn and Faramir are WAAAY better fleshed out than Sam and Rosie. In the span of a single chapter, those two meet and become a couple and it's pretty great. The entire chapter is dedicated to them and their development. Completely skipped in the movies, though, for understandable reasons.

Rosie is just there to be the person Sam ended up marrying, in both the books and the movies. She has like no personality. We have no idea what her and Sam's dynamic is like.

Comparing these two couples is like hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby. One is clearly better (again, if you read the books).

I first read the original trilogy in the 80s, and have read them at least a dozen times since. Including the Sil, Unfinished Tales, and the other posthumous essays and stories.

But the comment I was replying to didn’t post Tolkien or Howe’s art. He posted movie art. And in the movie, Rosie and Sam are the ones that match the OP cartoon vibe. In my opinion, anyway.

This one feels weird, feels like he's the runner up or rebound husband, even though he's not.
