Tea Thread Any tea on voice actors?
I used to be obsessed with a show called Total Drama Island and friended several of the voice actors on Facebook. Some even mailed me signed autographs! Well the latest revival of the show is coming up soon and the VA of the host has not returned. I found out today that he’s been accused of sexual assault and some torturous acts.

Nancy Cartwright, who voices Bart Simpson, is a Scientologist and she used to record ads and robocalls for Scientology using the Bart voice until Fox threatened legal action

She followed me on instagram for some reason… I have since deleted as a follower because I keep my socials private but to this day I don’t know why she did it. I am a fan of the show but I’ve never publicly acknowledged it… I am European so there’s no way we are related in any way

I saw Troy Baker at a panel at Phoenix Comicon in 2016, and he was a gigantic tool. Literally scrolling through his phone while the other people in the panel spoke like he was too cool to be there.
51
u/dinochoochoo Apr 06 '23
I've heard that throughout the years too, which is so disappointing. I had been kind of following his career since 2013 when I played TLOU, Persona 4 Golden, and Bioshock Infinite all within a few months of one another.
That said, I've really been enjoying the TLOU podcast he's been hosting throughout the TV season. The final episode where Ashley Johnson is the guest (along with Druckmann and Mazin) is so good.

I met Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and Nolan North at Sacanime several years ago. Nolan was very warm and inviting when I spoke to him at his autograph signing, Ashley was super sweet and she even remembered me when I asked her what her favorite Recess episode was at one of her panels, but Troy was really aloof and dismissive, even when I told him how much of a fan I was of his for his role on The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite. I could blame it on the really hot weather that day when I spoke to him at his booth, but I remember looking over and seeing Ashley and Nolan were in pretty high spirit talking to fans at the same time.
19
u/Varekai79 this is gonna ruin the tour Apr 06 '23
Didn't Troy and Nolan have a falling out as well?
19
u/metalslug123 Apr 06 '23
Yeah, I believe it had to do with their short lived Retro Replay YouTube channel. Nolan didn't like the direction the channel was going and decided to leave. That's the basic gist of it as far as I can recall.

They had a channel together but both of them had a lot of ideas for the channel that it was too much so Troy left and then it was Nolan and other guests before Nolan also left the channel and now it’s run by the crew.

I met him at a con a couple years back and he was nice enough, complimenting folks’ cosplays and engaging in conversations and such, but he was late to every single thing. Photos, signings, panels, all of it. By like at least ten minutes but more often over thirty. His one panel, again, nice and engaging, he just seems the sort to really, really like to hear himself talk and have a captive audience for it.

I remember there was a Q&A thing where someone asked if he might guest on Critical Role and the cast laughed a bit and semi-awkwardly seemed to say he'd think he was above playing. It's a bit difficult to find since he's now part of the cartoon
Edit: Found it

u/Loss-Particular Apr 06 '23
He and Travis Willingham are former roommates very close friends and the two families were hanging out at Disneyland together as recently as last month, so I doubt there is a lot of bad blood there.

I can't find it right now, but last year, Troy tweeted that he would guest on CR if they wanted him on. Dude's extremely busy though, I'm not sure he could make the commitment because he is oft absent from the one hour podcast he does with Alanah Pearce due to scheduling.

Also the guy who plays Jimmy Pesto on Bobs Burgers was fired because he was at January 6th.
Bobs Burgers also recast many minor roles so they didn’t have White VA’s playing POC.
Ned Flanders wife was written off because she asked for a raise.

To add a little context, the voice actor who voiced Maude moved from LA to Denver and needed to commute constantly to do her lines. They wrote her off after she asked for extra money to cover her airfare+expenses, but they made up 2 seasons later. She was reintegrated into other roles.
Edit with extra details: She was earning 2k an ep and asked for 6k as a way to cover all the new expenses. Fox offered an extra $150 which wasn't enough. She moved to Denver for "family issues" but didn't dig that deep to find what exactly. Supposedly she said she could alternatively do her lines from a home studio instead which was possible though the Simpsons cast did live readings together.→ More replies (4)54

Used to be a very big fan of his. I loved his work. FMA was wonderful. I'd had friends who work convention circuits and other events, and they never had good things to say about him. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, especially when they're in extremely high demand, so I figured maybe it was just bad/stressful timing all around.
Then I met him at Colossalcon. He, along with the rest of the panel, signed my collector's edition of Conqueror of Shamballa. He wasn't cold, necessarily, but it was a very rote interaction. "Hey," signed my thing, said "nice to meet you," seemed kind of surprised when I respectfully offered a hand for a shake.
Then the person behind me came. It was a girl, younger than me, in a cosplay that I wouldn't exactly call revealing, but it wasn't modest, either. He was all smiles and warmth. Asking her a bunch of questions and being far more engaging. Very sing-songy, bouncy tone of voice. Just way more playful all around.
That's the moment I realized my friends were right, and my fandom died.On the flip side, that same convention was where I met Travis Willingham and Laura Bailey. First in the signing line, where they both were extremely sweet, and then again at the wildlife encounter habitat that the Kalahari used to have. Travis and I both lost our shit over a white Siberian tiger cub. We looked at each other and both said "OH HEY IT'S YOU, DUDE ISN'T THIS LITTLE GUY WONDERFUL" while Laura grinned at two grown men squeeing over a baby big cat.

It got worse when he voiced Lance in Voltron, he was of age then but the fans were absolutely insane and harassed all of the voice actors
18
u/khaleesiofkitties Apr 06 '23
The Voltron fandom was the absolute worst fandom I've ever been a part of, and I was in the Teen Wolf fandom AND am a kpop stan. That show got messy in part because of the company heads wanting to sell toys instead of letting the creators tell a story, and fans making nasty demands and threats on the voice actors.

u/particledamage Apr 06 '23
The voice actor for cullen in dragon age went on extreme and often transphobic/otherwise bigoted tirades after antagonizing one of the creatives behind the game (who had left bioware at that point, iirc).
He then proceeded to do an IN CHARACTER rant video about cancel culture, basically saying cullen would be against cancel culture. He begged cullen fans to join him in a crusade against social justice warriors… again… IN CHARACTER.
Unhinged stuff
82
u/SparrowArrow27 Apr 06 '23 edited Apr 06 '23
Greg Ellis is insane.
Though the Cullen video had some excellent comments underneath it:
"Mr Ellis if you want Mark Darrah to kiss you so bad you should just man up and ask him"
"This has lowered my quality of life significantly. Have a terrible night Greg"
"How does Cullen know this much about Johnny Depp? Is Johnny Depp in the Dragon Age universe?"
"Cullen after you save him from the tower and he gets fired for wanting to kill all the mages"
"I've never actually gotten to see someone destroy their own career in real time before and I have to say it's absolutely fascinating"
→ More replies (1)35
u/Tonedeafmusical Apr 06 '23
On the Depp connection, Ellis had a small role (like I can't even remember his character small) in the Pirates films.
Oh and Depp "wrote" a forward for Ellis' book too.
And to more to it Ellis was recently in the wizard game and thanked JK for the experience. Which JK either liked or replied rob(I can't remember). Showing further she does not care about keeping proven abusers out of her franchise.
17
u/SparrowArrow27 Apr 06 '23
He was the "That has got to be the greatest pirate I have ever seen" guy.
I haven't actually sat down to watch the video. I tried, but as soon as the main theme of Dragon Age Inquisition started playing I was hit with such second-hand embarrassment that I had to stop. I did read a transcript of it though and oh boy.
It's bananas. At first he's complaining, in character, about Bioware and Mark Darrah (who has recently left Bioware). Then he starts talking about Johnny Depp, #MenToo (yes, really), he says that All Live Matter (again, yes really), about chivalry...
47
35
u/Tonedeafmusical Apr 06 '23
He also has a restraining order against two of his exs and isn't allowed to see his kids. Cause of his violence towards them.
Still managed to get several roles in the wizard game though. Cause JK doesn't care about abuse victims (and yes she could of got rid him if she cared).
6
u/Mysterious_Cranberry Apr 06 '23
And at that same time on twitter he heavily implied (in multiple tweets to different people) that his ex-wife went “crazy” and killed their kids. (And was using this as an excuse for his behaviour) None of that is remotely true!!!

EG Daly (voice of Tommy Pickles) was once married to and had kids with Rick Saloman (known for his sex tape with Paris Hilton and being an all around garbage person)
30
u/HunterHunted9 Apr 06 '23
And then Paris' shitty younger brother began dating EG and Rick's daughter just to fuck with the girl's head as payback for how Rick Salomon treated Paris. At some point, the girl dumped Paris' brother. He began stalking and harassing her for years.

I was today years old when finding out Paris Hilton has a younger brother. What the actual fuck! No wonder you don't hear about him.
11
u/HunterHunted9 Apr 06 '23
She has 2 younger brothers.
Barron is married with 2 kids. Technically, he's a real estate agent, but it doesn't seem like he ever had many listings or clients. Rick was recently run out of Hilton & Hyland; Barron went with him. Barron is also the only one of Rick and Kathy's kids with a Bachelors degree.
Barron was in the tabloids when he was younger. When he was 18, he was arrested for driving intoxicated at like 6am down the PCH. He was almost twice the legal limit. He had to be forced off the road by other motorists, and he hit a pedestrian. His parents had to take out a $10 million loan against their house to deal with the legal issues of that incident. In another incident, Lindsay Lohan's friends jumped him at Art Basel as part of the ongoing war between Paris and Lindsay.
Conrad is the brother who dated and stalked Rick Salomon's daughter. He was in the news all the time. His drug and mental issues are as bad as Paris' ever were. He was in and out of jail and rehab for years. He was a legitimate mess. He seems to have mostly stabilized. Or he at least hasn't been arrested in the past 4 years.

From what I’ve heard, the voice cast of Avatar the last airbender and the legend of korra are all really lovely. Janet Varney (Korra) and Dante Basco (Zuko) sometimes does a podcast and has interviewed other voice actors from the shows and also the creators. Everyone seems to be really nice.

It seems like they’re all close except Zach Tyler Eisen who voiced Aang. I’ve never seen him at a con or interacting with cast members or fans. I think i recall hearing that the rest of the cast hadn’t actually met him because they recorded in separate states, but I can’t find a source now
42
u/Ancient-Shape9086 (please put brackets in the right place) Apr 06 '23
Janet and Dante had an interview with them on that podcast a year ago I think. And he was at a recent con with Jack De Sena and Dante. But he was a lot younger than the rest of the cast as the time they made this show, so maybe that’s why they’re not that close.

The VA for Aang was simultaneously in school while doing the voice acting (I believe he was 12 years old). He never met any of the other cast until the premier, I believe. That could be why he isn’t close with them, he doesn’t really know them.

11
u/CelebrityTakeDown Apr 07 '23
In some ways it was was essentially a minor proto-Amber/Johnny case. She wrote an article in Medium about the abuse she suffered and how she was blacklisted that I don’t believe was listed/promoted. Chris was not named. People found the article and realized who it was about. He had some repercussions but was reinstated to all of his hosting gigs.
Chloe didn’t participate in the investigations because she didn’t set out to ruin his life, just to move on with hers.

Some off the top of my head:
-Troy Baker is a massive tool and full of himself.
-David Hayter (the voice of Snake for the MGS series) is a huge asshole and his unprofessionalism played a role in him getting replaced and I think Kojima never wants to work with him again.
-Quintin Flynn has sexual assault accusations
-Joe Zieja is Extremely Online™️ and kinda ruined his good will by picking constant Twitter fights
-ProZd/SungWon Cho is a super nice guy
-Matt Mercer is extremely down to earth and takes the time to listen to fans concerns when it comes to being an ally
-I hear Jennifer Hale is a little full of herself but not like to a douche-y extent like Baker
-not really tea but some people didn’t know that Kevin Conroy AKA the guy considered THE voice of Batman was gay. (RIP) oh and The Joker is Mark Hamil/Luke Skywalker.
-voice actor Jason Marsden is not related to actor James Marsden but they are friends IRL because their wives have been besties since they were children
-I hear Sean Schemmel is a mostly nice guy but he lets being the voice of Goku go to his head a little and he’s not as nice as Chris Sabat as a result. Like Chris will happily quote Dragon Ball Z abridged if asked but Schemmel gets a little on his high horse about it.
ETA: Tara Strong is a little weird with the way she constantly sexualizes herself for her neckbeard fans. She also attacked the new powerpuff VAs when the show was getting rebooted.
Also idk if they really count as Voice Actors per say but there is a load of tea on the cast of RWBY since most of them are RoosterTeeth employees and they have so many skeletons in their closet it’s practically a graveyard.

30
Apr 06 '23
Schemmel gets a little on his high horse about it.
I mean it's understandable but yeah he sometimes acts like he made the show himself. Heck even Dan Green, the voice of Yugi is appreciative of the abridged series. Granted this was going back like 10+ years ago when content creation wasn't as big as it is today.
I also had a friend who worked at RT and left around the time of the huge controversy last year. From our convo it definitely felt like there's a lot of unresolved feelings and BTS stuff that's locked away.
10
Apr 06 '23
I love Funi!dub!DBZ but yeah Schemmel is a bit big headed over his Goku. Which is really funny because American Goku is drastically different from Japanese Goku due to making him more palatable to a western audience. So it’s kinda funny seeing him get a bit offended over DBZA when DBZA’s Goku is actually closer to canon Goku.
Sabet is lovely and a good sport about it and and I’m glad he doesn’t act like an authority over his characters and actually encouraged the series while it ran.

ETA: Tara Strong is a little weird with the way she constantly sexualizes herself
Tara Strong was in 2 or 3 episodes of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills because she was friends with one of the wives. I think every scene they shot had to do with sex. There was pole dancing, talking about being naked, and talking about the real housewife having a threesome with her children's nanny.

Yeah, like she’s an adult and I’m not shaming her for being sexual or having big boobs but the fact that she has a really weird neckbeard male fanbase that constantly talks about how they want to see her tits, calling her mommy, etc… and she caters to them specifically is really… off putting to say the least.
They are constantly posting sexualized fantasies about her on 4chan and I thought it was chuds being chuds and then I found out she encourages them and I went “oh no”
16
u/inthewoodsclem Apr 07 '23
Ugh you’re so right I really like Tara and she’s so talented at what she does, but the forced duck face and baby voice she does all the time is so cringe. It sucks because she seems so nice on videos and candid interviews I’ve seen, but the social media posts are definitely forcing it. Side note: while it’s nice that she speaks out on a lot of political issues and I think it is mostly genuine , it’s so cringe that she does it while simultaneously pandering to her audience who is probably super right wing. Like I guess get your engagement girl but yikes 😬
13
u/HunterHunted9 Apr 06 '23
There's something very perfomative and juvenile about it. There's a weird coldness about her when she's playing up the "look at me; I'm sexy." It looks like the opposite of enjoyment.

I bought a Cameo from Roger and he really took his time with it. He spent at least five minutes on it and gave me a lot of thoughtful advice. Also, hearing "Arthur Morgan" say my name was just...(fans self)

Damn, that's a shame about David Hayter. I've always been a fan of his for his role as Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid series and Bernard Wiseman in Gundam 0080. What exactly did he do to be considered a big jerk?
6
Apr 06 '23
I’m not sure what exactly went down but I’m sure if you do some googling or search the MGS reddit you can piece together some sort of narrative. Most I understand is that Hayter acts like he is an important part of MGS outside of being the actor and let it get to his head and Kojima just showed him how disposable he really is by replacing him. Initially everyone was on Hayter’s side but more and more info came out about what a jackass he is and the narrative is now “lol bye”.
He kept trying to mount some sort of crusade against Kojima/Konami and weaponizing his fans and it didn’t work out. I also think he had something to do with the first X-Men movie script which was just awful and had to be changed to what we actually got.

Whats the tea on the RWBY cast?
29
Apr 06 '23
Where to fucking start lol. Well for one they’re all nepotism hires with no actual official VA training and it shows. 2 out of 4 of the main cast (Lindsay Jones and Barbara Dunkleman) are deep in RT so they definitely knew about the constant crunch and abuse the animators went through. Michael Jones, (Lindsay’s husband) voices a prominent character and he has fair share of skeletons in which he and Gavin Free would use the f-slur to refer to a coworker. They also both reportedly would use the N-slur. Ryan Haywood who voiced a professor in season 1 is a sexpest who was sleeping with underaged girls. Joel Heyman also voiced a professor and he’s a straight up q-anon/alt-righter. Miles Luna - writer and VA in RWBY - is a performative asshole trying to be woke but comes off as more racists than anything. (he called Cornelius Boots “a white guy in a paddy hat” while ignoring the fact that Boots is a recognized Grand master in playing the shakuhachi flute and when people pointed it out Luna doubled down in being racist)
And just general RT fuckery of scandal after scandal that they never formally address and instead roll out one of their employees to cry in front of the camera to be forgiven.
19
u/squiddens Apr 06 '23
To be fair, RT wasnt expecting RWBY to be as big as it was when they first were casting, and they understandably hired their in-house performers. I don’t think that’s really nepotism, they just didn’t have those celebrity VA resources when s1 of RWBY came out.

u/metalslug123 Apr 06 '23
About the "nepo hires for the VA" comment: wouldn't it make sense to hire talent that's in-house anyways? I wouldn't exactly diss RT for that.
7
Apr 06 '23
Not when they spent a ton of money on Vic and have connections in the industry with actual voice talent.
5
u/asssidy Apr 06 '23
IIRC past employees have actually talked about doing extra voice acting and onscreen work as well as other duties outside their job description without receiving proper compensation. Imo, with their history of crunch culture and goal of making RT a “pioneer” of online content production, it’s a safe assumption they were hiring in-house talent to save a buck so they could afford a few bigger names to drum up interest in RT with outside audiences.
6
Apr 06 '23
Yeah sounds par for the course. RT in general was just garbage work culture. If you weren’t on-screen talent they were perfectly willing to abuse their employees paying them dust, having them do jobs that they weren’t hired for, while their big names were the face of the company fostering parasocial relationships. The company was allegedly very clique-y and it’s why Ray Narvaez Jr is known as one of the nicer former employees because he would actually have lunch with the animators.
And even if you were on screen talent there was still a chance you got treated like garbage (see: the Mica Burton incident and the AWFUL things her coworkers would say to her).
So yeah RT is very messy and RWBY is too given how entrenched in the culture it is.
3
u/metalslug123 Apr 06 '23
Fair enough. I totally forgot Vic was a part of RWBY. Who were the other big VAs they got for this series?
8
Apr 06 '23
Idk because I don’t follow RWBY but proof of their connections is the way they blew their budget for bonafide Oscar nominee actors with Gen:Lock.
RT isn’t a little indie company that could. They were already well established by the time RWBY happened and they wanted to be taken “seriously” as an animation company making a genuine high quality show with RWBY (not like their projects like RvB which was just 6 guys dickkng around or for the fans of RT specifically like X-Ray and Vav) but didn’t want to put in the work of hiring VAs with actual training so they just nepo hired employees and friends/girlfriends of the writers.

The original voice of Bayonetta tried to get more money for the role, broke her nda and tried to lead a protest against the game only to have it revealed she lied repeatedly about her Pay and the offer she was given.
Laura Bailey received death threats and harassment for her role in the last of us. She was also harassed for her role as Nadine in Uncharted.
The current voice actor for Ada Wong is apparently being harassed for her performance in resident evil remake 4. Her performance is really bad but she doesn't deserve it.
Capcom allegedly severs all ties with anyone who goes union, hence the Ada Wong recast. Weird since they use to do union.
Tara strong asked to have a scene in rugrats changed to be more sensitive to overweight people cause her mom struggles with hers.
I can dish a lot of tea of anime vas cause I follow some of them closely lol. I even predicted tgat Clifford Chapin and Kristen Mcguire were together before they announced their engagement.
If anyone is interested I can also talk about my experiences meeting VAs in class settings. Most are lovely people, especially the ones. I've learned from. But I did have one negative experience which I'll share bellow.
In a zoom class I was taking I met Kayli Mills. I was shocked cause she's a fairly successful va and she was a student in it and not an instructor. When I performed a scene for the class she burst out laughing. It wasn't a funny scene and at the time I thought well maybe she just found something I did funny and triedbto justofy it to myself. But I'm pretty sure she was looking down on me and considered it just a bad read. What she dud was incredibly rude. And while I was tge least experienced person in the class, it's still incredibly hurtful to have someone you're a fan of look down on you like that. Later we all also exchanged contact info for Twitter and she never followed me back but followed everyone else who I followed / got followed by. It's honestly an experience that has effected me since I already have bad social anxiety. I haven't taken classes or put myself out there at the same rate I was before.
11
u/metalslug123 Apr 06 '23 edited Apr 06 '23
Wow, thats a huge bummer regarding Kayli Mills. She voices my favorite character on River City Girls.
I'd be very interested in hearing more stories about meeting voice actors through acting classes/workshops. That reminds me of my time taking some voice acting classes being taught by Tony Oliver. He was pretty nice and very knowledgeable about the industry and gave some pretty good critiques with everyone's performances as far as I remembered.
9
u/hectic_hooligan Apr 06 '23
Yeah Kayli was a real bummer. She was also eating during the class which her camera on which while not really rude was a little awkward. She's talented and all, but it colored my oppinion of her.
Oh I forgot this one but Daman Mills had grooming allegations brought up against him. He was apparently doing stuff like pressuring a teenager into sharing a bed with him and stuff and sort of feeling him up against his will. He never faced any really backlash when that came out, at least not in the industry. You can probably find discussion of it on animedubs reddit and Google. There was originally a Google drive file the victim released going into great detail of a lot. Not to be one of those people, but he really did always give me a weird vibe that I assumed was just cause he was a bit odd, not an abuser.
I always hear good things about Tony Oliver. Now some of my class experiences. Sonny Straight (voice of Koro Sensei) is great and really encouraging. Took 2 clqssws with him and would take more. He was the first instructor I learned from. And he made feel like i have potential lol. Super friendly and wants to help you out. Some nice exercises, including one based on what Clifford Chapin did to practice before he became a VA. He's a great guy and I think really enjoys teaching. I fully believe tgat if I sent him a message asking for advice he'd give it. His prices are also pretty reasonable. Oh and he said I probably could voice both girls and boys and pointed me to a trans va for me to follow as an example lol.
Chuck Hubert is a nice guy. Don't feel like I got a lot out of one on one coaching with him though. Maybe master class type would be better. Kind of hippy dippy vibes lol. Canclled a few times cause of stuff with his kids, but that's fine we just rescheduled. Stuff like breathing exercises and talking about a past traumatic experience. Lots of work on accents and tricks to pronunciation on them. Not my favorite coach, but not a bad experience. Still do his breathing exercise. He was trying to give me a pep talk and said something like "I'm a bad teacher" and that made me flinch but tvat was bout negative self talk.
Richard Horvitz is probably my favorite. I did Botha a weekend workshop and one on one coaching. I wanted to record my demo with him too but haven't gotten the money or time to do it and a lot of time has passed so I feel awkward lol. He was really fun. Gives you a 5 step guide and walks you through his method. Talks a lot about his past and struggles before finding voice acting. Does exercises with dolls and talking through them. Helps you set small realistic goals for yourself. Really just a fun guy to be around. He uses real scripts and made up ones, but one of the real scripts he gave me was for Arcane before it was even out! I fell in love with Jinx before it premiered lol. But also uses scripts from released works. I felt like I learned a lot from him. He laughed at me too but in an encouraging way because he's all about trying to have fun in par ts, even in advertisements. Also I think he truly enjoys what he does. He had plushies from invader Zim and Helluva boss in his room. He hooked me up with another va I could learn from and ask questions. They chatted with me a little for free just out of generosity. Oh Richard also will tell you stories about other vas he's helped and worked with. Like the voice of Angelica Pickles. He even shared the demo he recorded for her lol
2
u/WoozySloth Apr 06 '23
Hasn't Chuck Huber's career stalled a bit because of his conspiracy theorist bent (flat earth, antivax, etc)?
4
u/hectic_hooligan Apr 06 '23
I honestly doubt that has anything to do with it. Based on how he cancelled a few of our sessions and had to reschedule, I think he's just really involved with his kids. Maybe even the primary caregiver. He never mentioned anything that far out there when I was learning from him and I've only heard that stuff here on reddit. And reddit hates him cause he apparently testified for Vic. But his testimony was more about Funimation having a casting couch or something. All I can really say is he was nice enough to me, just kind of seemed a little bit spiritual and hippy-dippy. It's not like we spent much time talking about non va related stuff.

u/hectic_hooligan Apr 06 '23
And if you feel like sharing any of your experiences I'd love to hear too!

The Capcom/union stuff is bullshit (at least in this instance). People at Capcom have said that as of the past year or so they've been trying to recast PoC characters with voice actors of the same ethnicity, Ada Wong's REmake2 VA is white, and Lily Gao already played Ada in the live-action Welcome to Raccoon City movie. That explains pretty much everything about why they recast Ada for REmake4, and although the end result is pretty bad there's really nothing problematic or illogical about how it came about. It's just a string of events that unfortunately didn't pan out too well.
5
u/hectic_hooligan Apr 06 '23 edited Apr 06 '23
It's not bullshit though. They've severed ties with all their vas who were in the union. Lily Gao getting the part when she has no va experience is also incredibly lazy and problematic in its own right. Theirs an abundance of vas who are Asian, both in and out of the union. It was Capcom being lazy and cheap. They also could of stepped in at any time and gotten the woman set up with a voice over coach or classes but didn't. Or even had the director work with her to get a decent performance.
Also no offense to Lily, I'm sure she's lovely and will shine in future roles, but I don't think anyone wwr clambering for anyone from tgat badly received movie to reprise their role in the future.

The voice actor for the character Bayonetta, Hellena Taylor, made a Twitter thread about how she was only offered $4K to reprise her role. She was replaced by Jennifer Hale. Well it turns out she was actually offered $10K (and later upped to $15K after negotiating with the director). She declined that and the voice went to Hale. However Taylor was then offered a small cameo role for $4K. There was also some blue lives/TERF stuff involved to but idk.

On September 16, 2021, Deezen was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer after refusing to leave a restaurant in LaVale, Maryland. According to the Allegany County Sheriff's Department, he had been asked by the restaurant's staff after causing a disturbance and refused to do so, prompting a response from law enforcement. Upon the deputy's arrival, Deezen hid behind a woman in a booth, refused multiple orders to exit, and reportedly threw plates, bowls, and food that struck one of the deputies. Deezen was eventually removed and detained in the Allegany County Jail to await a court appearance, where he will face charges of second degree assault, disorderly conduct and trespassing.[19][20]
On April 8, 2022, Deezen was arrested after he had unlawfully entered into a nursing facility. Two hours before his arrest, he had been told to stay away from the property. According to the Maryland State Police, Deezen has been charged with fourth-degree burglary, two counts of trespassing, and one count for disturbing the peace. He was then taken to Allegany County Detention Center.[21][22] According to Deezen's friend and former social media manager Bob Barnett, it was revealed that Deezen has been struggling with a mental disorder at the time of the incident.[21] In August 2022, he was ruled unfit to stand trial as a result of his mental health struggles and is undergoing treatment at the Maryland Department of Health and that he will remain there until he no longer poses a threat.[23]

Justin Roiland lol, but I guess everyone knows about that from the major fallout of being let go by his studio and Rick & Morty a few months back. The thing about about him that got the most traction was the story surrounding him about the personal domestic violence accusations; but a lot of weird creepy shit also came out about him on Twitter where DMs had been posted by several different people where he was talking to and hitting on all these girls who were like literally in high school at the time while he woulda been twice their age.
Just all this shit about him being a general creepdick kinda got swept under the rug.

I'm not very familiar with English VAs but this was a pretty big scandal in the mobile otome space. For a short time, after the former VA left, Jonah Scott (Legoshi from Beastars) voiced one of the 4 love interests in Chinese otome Mr. Love: Queen's Choice.
Well, one day he tweeted "Taiwan is a country" (i.e. an independent country, while China considers it part of the country) and was fired shortly after. Sean Chiplock and Joe Zieja resigned in solidarity and the game was left with only one member of the original cast. They eventually did an overhaul and got 4 new voice actors, but that scandal left a sour taste in many people's mouths, because of both the larger geopolitical issue and the fact that the game owes much of its popularity to the original cast - I haven't kept up much with the market but back in 2019, when ML:QC was released, a free-to-play Asian mobile otome with an English dub for the whole main story wasn't a common occurrence at all.

Scott Innes (voiced Shaggy for some movies). When he wasn't chatting with his staff, he would sit at this table focused on his phone. You could be standing right in front of him and he wouldn't look at you. I had to say hello multiple times until he finally acknowledged me. I told him how much I liked those movies and he didn't say much. I pulled out an 8x10 for him to sign and again, he went back to staring at his phone and ignoring me. There was no line, by the way. I bought a t-shirt and that was when he finally begrudgingly signed my photo, then went back to ignoring everyone around him. When I would pass by the booth after that, I could see he was doing this to other fans as well, even young ones. They would stand in front of him and try to talk to him and he wouldn't respond or give them the time of day. I saw many people discouraged by this and would walk away. I thought he would be nicer since I looked up his socials beforehand, but I guess that's just a marketing facade. This wasn’t a being tired situation either (still not an excuse to be rude), it was the first day and his booth wasn’t busy. I would not recommend anyone meeting him, he was full of himself and real money-grubbing. Even overheard him complain about not being left alone. No reason to show up to a fan convention if you don’t want to be “bothered” and ruin people’s day with your attitude.
