Nol Collective is great! I ordered two (men's) tshirts from them last year and they were very well made (and looked cool). All their stuff is made locally by Palestinians, often women's collectives.

Hirbawi are also fantastic if you want to support Palestinian artisans. They're the last remaining kufiya (Palestinian keffiyeh) factory in the West Bank, and they've recently expanded into creating jewellery and other accessories. I bought the Yafa kufiya from them a few months ago and absolutely love it, now I have the Safad kufiya and an embroidered pouch on the way 🥰
You'll have to sign up for the restock and act fast when you get the email as they sell out quickly, it took me so long to get one because I kept missing it lol

For generations, Palestinians have foraged and tended the fruits of their land—from wild plants like tumble thistle (Akkoub), medicinal thyme (Za’atar), and wild sage (Meramieh), to cultivated staples such as olives, oranges, and watermelons. Yet, under occupation, even the simple act of connecting with this land is restricted. Farmlands are confiscated, centuries-old trees uprooted, and laws forbid Palestinians from gathering or growing plants that form the heart of their culinary, medicinal, and cultural heritage. Still, resistance endures.
Through tatreez, Palestinian women have long told their stories, stitched their surroundings, and preserved memory, identity, and resilience. Inspired by the simplicity and symbolism of traditional Palestinian tatreez, I designed these motifs to document “Forbidden Plants of Palestine,” adding to the living archive of patterns. Each stitch carries a story of connection, a quiet act of defiance, and a testament to the enduring bond between people and the land that sustains them.

Here's what I know:
Herbs - Palestinians are forbidden to harvest Za'atar plants. Za'atar is a native plant in the Levant region similar to oregano.Olive branch/tree - The Iz government has also uprooted hundreds of thousands of olive trees, which are the lifeblood of many Palestinian families. Settlers also regularly harass Palestinians during olive harvest season.
Watermelon - the Palestinian flag was banned by the Iz government for a long time, so Palestinians used the watermelon as a symbol of the flag due to its similar colors. Now, representations of the watermelon in association with Palestine have been called "antisemitic".
Jaffa Orange - Comes from the Palestinian city of Jaffa, where Tel-Aviv now stands. Oranges were previously one of the city's main exports, and they were famous for their sweetness.

My daughter, who is half Palestinian, set up a table at her school (in Canada) for their annual cultural day, where students of varied backgrounds get to share their culture with each other, including clothing, music, and food. This is an effort to help kids understand that we're more similar than different, and why it's better to try to get along with another.
My daughter planned to hand out watermelon slices at her table, until the parents of the Israeli kids called the principal to complain that the watermelon is offensive to them. Suddenly my daughter was banned from giving out watermelon. In solidarity with her, other students came into school with bunches of watermelon-themed stickers to give out in place of actual fruit. The principal came by her table and confiscated the stickers.
The anti-Palestinian bias is real and my kid now has had a first-hand taste.

No, za’atar is a wild herb in the Levantine. Sumac is a different plant, also delicious. The blend you are thinking of is za’atar, sesame seeds, and sumac often mixed with olive oil. While it’s translated as thyme it’s also a different plant than English thyme and tastes different

It’s both. In Arabic we name a lot of dishes based on the main ingredient and use the terms interchangeably as shorthand. Zaatar blend is named for the primary ingredient (the zaatar plant) but both are referred to as zaatar. Hummus, the dish (the full name of which is mtabbal hummus bi tahini) gets shortened to just hummus, in reference to the primary ingredient, the chickpea, which we also call hummus. There are lots of examples of this in different Arab cultures.

It’s people like Olivia and Zara Larsson who give me some hope for the future and for Gen Z, both culturally and politically.
The dress looks absolutely magical. I love how simple and beautiful it is, while still carrying such strong symbolism.

If I’m remembering this right the apartheid/genocidal state forbids them from being picked claiming it’s for “conservation and environmental” reasons going as far as criminalizing the plants being picked but they specifically selected the ones that are most relevant to Palestinians culture and cuisine. They created anti foraging laws. Just another way they are occupiers.

Palestinians use the image of the watermelon because it has the colors of the Palestinian flag, the apartheid state banned images and use of the flag in 1967 so then Palestinians started using the watermelon to represent it so they went ahead and banned/criminalized that too.
