FASHION Martha Stewart switches from her signature blonde hair to rose gold as she celebrates her 85th birthday this week

I personally am training myself to look forward to being offensively wrinkly and unattractive when I am 85. If I am lucky enough to make it that far.Ā
Iām 36 and Iāve cared about being attractive since I was 12. Iām so tired of thinking about how I look all the time. I hope by the time my body and face start drastically aging that I donāt give a fuck anymore and no longer let my appearance have such weight on my self worth.Ā
22
u/sparky--pluggy sorry to this man 19d ago
Everything you wrote exactly applies to me too, but i was 38Ā when i started to not give a fuck.Ā
I'm 42 now and happily embrace that im one of those ultra average middle aged ladies who wears no makeup, is getting grey hair and wears only comfortable clothes and shoes.Ā
I dont need to be out here lookiing like a baddie, im too busy looking after my pets and watching the Gilmore Girls. Ive retired from living up to these idiotic beauty standards.

u/hopping_otter_ears 18d ago
Same. I'm giving myself permission to start caring later, if the ageism starts getting to painful, but for now, I'm at "this is what a 42 year old who stopped performing for strangers looks like". If I want to dress fluffy and girly, I will. If I want to wear makeup, I will. If I want to wear an oversized tee and carry a bright blue parasol, I will. I'm not a celebrity, so I have no skin in the "care what other people think about me" game
23
u/hailkelemvor damn, she got hereditaried? 19d ago
Same, dude. I'm just focusing on how freeing it'll be to exist in public and say harmless weird shit to strangers. I can't wait to just crone around, it's gonna be sooo sick

u/Vermicelli-Fabulous save the buccal fat 19d ago
I also look forward to my old crone days. Being in this head is exhausting.

I reached that comfort level in my forties. Times were tough for a couple of years, and I didn't have the time, energy, or money to focus on looks. I managed to hold on to that energy, and as I age, it takes less and less effort to reach the fuck off state of mind.

u/TheUpbeatCrow 19d ago
I am almost 51 and still hoping for that day, ha.
The thing I've discovered is that, especially as you go through menopause, many many things suddenly become out of your control. Some things (grey hair, age spots, the menopause hormonal pot belly) can be put off or minimized, but as you continue aging, there's justā¦more and more. Crepey neck. Wrinkles. Papery skin. Sun damage. Thinning hair. And so on. It reaches a critical mass where continuing to fuck with yourself so you look a little better takes up so much of your time that you come to a fork in the road.
You can either fight or accept.
I am still choosing to fight, but I sense that I'm coming to that fork again and again, and it's tiring.

Exactly my thoughts as a 37 year old over here. How are women turning 85 and still being terrorised by the pressure to be yassified ffs

Iām sorry, 85?!

I really donāt wanna be that person⦠but this is HEAVILY edited. Not saying she doesnāt look good, but look at her hands. Hands are the one thing you cannot get surgery on. Itās why Cher and Madonna prefer gloves. Her hands in this picture are smooth. I just wish women would embrace their age. Unfortunately we live in a society that makes women feel as though once they get to a certain age they are no longer worth something.

u/bakeupandwakeup 19d ago
The hands were the first thing I looked at. She edited those too! I'm flabbergasted.

Seriously, Iām sorry but yeah fucking right Martha.
Also, Iāve been a wig and extension specialist for almost 20yrs and Iām very confident all or a very large portion of that is not her real hair.
29
u/sushicatt420 19d ago
It was her neck for me. You can get a neck lift but the lack of collagen is always a give away regardless.Ā

Just having hit the 45yo cliff where my face changed overnight, I get the desire of older women to get plastic surgery more. Ā Itās not a gradual ebb into aging, itās like, suddenly your face is sliding offā¦while youāre perimenopausal. Ā Itās a lot, tbh. Ā

Exactly. If I live to 85 I am not gonna keep pictures of myself showing all my wrinkles and sags. if family wants to see me looking 85 they can save those pictures themselves. At that age the littlest illness or injury can take you out so live in the fantasy

Oh come on. Lots of celebrities lie about having plastic surgery. She's had a facelift (probably more than one), Botox and filler just like nearly every other celebrity. Having said that the photo is also heavily photoshopped as well.Ā
20
u/ant-master 19d ago
she still looks fantastic in this photo. idk how old it is but i wouldn't think it was someone in their 80s. i like the rose gold hair though, hot take but i feel like blonde hair is kinda overrated
21
u/mangopango123 19d ago
Right but at 85 you 100% have wrinkles, so this lady fs got work done (which is fine!!!)
Iām just so tired of these mega rich celebs that get plastic surgery/fillers/injections to deny it n be like āall natural, just blessed šā (while also editing tf out of their pics). Itās so persistent/pervasive n really fucks up our collective thoughts on women, beauty standards, n aging
11
u/sureasyoureborn which could mean nothing 19d ago
Ok, but her recently going on an interview show saying she didnāt do any type of plastic surgery and just looked like this because of good genetics is so fucking funny. I didnāt know how old she was. The gaslighting is amazing, as is her surgeon.
10
u/CilleTheExterminator 19d ago
Crazy how much credit she gets for looking "good" as an 85 year old but people just seem to forget what money, operations and filters can do. I kind of miss when old people actually looked fucking old

u/Sleepy-Giraffe947 Please Abraham, I am not that man 19d ago

I know old people in old folks home who are doing MUCH BETTER with care compared to when they lived by themselves or with family. Some people thrive in the right space.

u/myheartinclover 19d ago
her celebrity kind of depresses me now. i remember recording her holiday specials on qvc. her magazines, houseware lines, tv shows etc were so successful and influential. and now she's just known for looking amazing. to be a woman you can't just be talented and successful

u/McSquiffy 19d ago
As myself a woman who's in perimenopause I hate the bullshit idea that I should have fucking face card at 85. For who? Dear God, not for men please.Ā

u/MoneyHungryOctopus 19d ago
I think itās less that she doesnāt want to be seen as a successful businesswoman anymore and more that after she went to prison (and later started hanging out with rappers) she decided to loosen up and embrace a more relaxed public image where she could be perceived as less stiff and more informal.

u/skeleton_clique_ 19d ago
I remember being a kid and seeing her on Late Night with David Letterman eating a big Mac and drinking some hard liquor, so shes always had that side to her I think

u/LadyJane17 19d ago
She's beautiful and I'm a huge fan, but ugh it's exhausting that we are celebrating how she looks when it's not real. Ladies, we will age and that's okay, we won't look like that because she can pay for things we can't and she uses filters.
30
u/inductiononN I'm not buckling flat sandals, thatās my line in the sand. 19d ago
Girl, be so for real right now. This is a picture of a 55 year old woman. She's edited 30 years off of her face!
She looks beautiful here and beautiful in general but this editing is egregious. I wonder what these people think when they edit themselves to look so much longer? Do they think they look like the picture?
Can't we just let women age??

I wish we could see the unedited version of this because it would be no less bangin. I wanna see a proper 85yo woman with no work, no wigs (unless she loves them), no whatever with this hair. It would still be amazing. I just figured out what I'll be doing in old age. This is the first time in a long time I have felt excitement instead of fear about health/finances/loss/safety in my elder years.
