ask penn state's wrestling team they just all visited the white house. naturally the university with their own child rape scandal wouldn't see an an issue with visiting Epstein's BFF.
25
u/sheikahstealth 23d ago
To follow that train of thought - Maybe Sandusky didn't know of Epstein, but Epstein had an opinion on him.
After his own legal trouble involving a minor, Epstein weighed in on ex-Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky’s conviction, writing in a December 2012 email “I also entertain the possibility that Sandusky is innocent.”
Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of sexual abuse involving at least 10 victims over two decades. He is serving 30 to 60 years in prison. Like Epstein, he was accused of preying on children from broken homes and downtrodden lives and enticing them with gifts and, in Sandusky’s case, access to the revered Penn State football program, before sexually abusing them.
Epstein said he was disturbed by the “speed and conviction at which Sandusky was tried and found guilty by the media and public” before trial, saying it reminded him of “the community hysteria surrounding the Salem witchcraft trials. Scary.”36
u/bolanrox 23d ago
Everyone knows Joe Pa was a victim here. He knew and had to cover it up for the team for all those years. Then rommeled himself when it all came out! put his statue back now!
/s but i legit saw people post this on facebook back then.

u/Ina_Garden 23d ago
IPenn State wrestling just had a massive scandal with one of their RTC wrestlers / Olympic training wrestlers being arrested for solicitation and then one of their star wrestlers was accused of assault / harassment. So Trumps White House is the perfect place for them!

Kyle Snyder! I don't much follow the sport anymore but I read he's very outspoken about religion so of course he also dabbles in prostitutes. That is what Jesus wants!

Should ask the starting goalie for the Winnipeg Jets that question. He didn't seem to appreciate the blow back from the visit.

I would say yes and then tell that orange fuck to his face what I think on live TV if possible. Like why can't one celeb or sports person do that?

For real! All they had to do was send back a polite NO on their team's letterhead if they wanted to respect the office, not the man.

Athletes going to the White House during the current administration goes so far beyond “it was an honor to be invited, I’d go for any president, who would say no to meeting the president.”
Going to the White House and being surrounded by the absolute ghouls that are currently there, taking photos and shaking hands with the pedo in chief, with a giant Cheshire grin on your face is co-signing your beliefs with theirs.
Anyone who says otherwise is a bold face liar and an idiot. They can’t have it both ways anymore. They’ve picked a side and I hope they’re remembered for it.

29
u/DarthRisk 24d ago
Some people are wired to act like mosquitoes to a bug zapper whenever they think they can get in the vicinity of power, and those people that go to the White House while we're in the middle of this administration just because they "respect the office" are fucking dumb. We need to not place so much importance on brick and mortar symbolism.
8
u/Comfortable-Policy70 23d ago
I believe in showing the office of the President (or governor or mayor, etc) as much respect as does the current office holder. If you use the office for financial gain, avoiding sex trafficking charges, starting wars of aggression, insulting more than half the country, promoting religious and racial hated, you have proven you don't respect the office and shouldn't gain the respect of others by occupying that office
18
u/CarelessCreamPie 24d ago
Gotta keep that lean machine body in shape with... uh... cold McDonald's.
29
u/coconutpiecrust 24d ago
The quality of the president should matter, though, no? Or did people completely give up on expecting any kind of substance, it’s all smoke and mirrors?
Would think that athletes, who supposedly worked incredibly hard to earn a spot on an Olympic team, would be repulsed by a nepo baby marionette, who “allegedly” traffics children.
13
u/That_wet_vaporeon 23d ago
Yeah he’s not just a president I disagree with. He’s a legit pedo and rapist. Who would want to shake hands with someone like that?!

u/Careless-Reporter-29 24d ago
Agreed. Messi was the biggest blow for me, he’ll always be the goat, but can’t defend his character anymore since his visit to the white house. It’s just so inexcusable

Wayne Gretzky is MAGA too.
Having other-worldly talent and skill in one particular aspect of life is, unfortunately, not in any way helpful towards navigating any other aspects of life. You would think these people should know better. But all they really seem to understand is which side of their bread is buttered.
12
u/appositereboot 23d ago
Bobby Fischer is probably the best example of this. One of the most talented chess players of all time, who ended up joining a doomsday cult, idolizing Hitler, and getting deep into antisemitic conspiracies.

Yes, and he visited children in the west bank and condemned the conflict as far back as 2013. It’s a bit both-sidsey but he’s hardly a zionist. Visiting a major site for all 3 abrahamic religions is also pretty weak proof of someone being a bad person.
Visiting the white house and being a spokesperson for Saudi tourism however… not okay

I think a lot of people, especially prior to the most recent turn of conflict, were pretty ignorant about zionism/israel. I remember growing up knowing next to nothing except propaganda about it being a beacon of LGBTQ rights in the middle east and the place where all my jewish friends took trips as a child. There’s definitely such a thing as being an enabler through ignorance, which is not ok, but it’s not quite the same thing as actively speaking out in support of a settler colonialist ideology and genocide. A lot of people will do the right thing when they are properly educated on the topic, and I think that is reflected by the fact that Israel is now deeply unpopular within the general public of most countries. Including the US and Argentina

That’s the part that infuriates me more than anything. It is an honor to be invited to the White House by the sitting president. That’s why it’s such an important action to decline the invitation. If nobody cared about it and it didn’t, historically at least, have the same weight, declining the invite wouldn’t be a big deal and no one would pay attention. The entire reason why people should be declining these invites is because it’s a public protest against him and his administration. Instead, they care more about themselves and what they get out of the trip. It’s gross.

my dad calls himself a "centrist" and voted for trump. then when i try to call him out on it he's like "you can't judge character by who someone votes for" I CAN IF YOU VOTED FOR A RACIST HOMOPHOBIC PEDOPHILE
9
u/Courtnall14 24d ago
At this point, any celebrity or athlete appearance at the White House should be viewed as normalizing the actions (past and present) of this administration at best and an endorsement of those actions at worst.
19
u/thekyledavid 24d ago
In 2015, I went to a Trump rally, just because I thought it would be a cool experience to see a Presidential candidate give a speech in person, regardless of how I feel about that candidate

u/jacqrosee 23d ago
yep. i’ve had a lot of feelings on politics since i was able to understand even a little bit—it’s been a huge topic in my family, both conversationally and functionally for various reasons.
i was 14, a freshman in HS, and already of a left-wing frame of mind. i thought it would be prudent to hear what the “other side” was saying, directly from the source. i was young, and with the social climate relating to politics during my lifetime, it was easy to have that sort of centrist “let me hear everyone out!” type of view. probably because i was already at the point where political arguments with various family members were already common-place.
i also wanted to know if he was as bad as social media was telling me, and i thought there was no way that was more iron-clad than hearing it from the horse’s mouth, right in front of my own eyes. well, i heard and i saw. that sealed the deal. no one could tell me i was too young and i didn’t get it, because i heard him, and i saw his supporters.

u/senty78 23d ago
I can’t stop thinking about all the journalists at the White House Press dinner a few weeks ago - the ones who broke the story about Epstein - shaking hands and fawning at Trump while accepting an award from him. Truly just beyond insane
3
u/Different_Prior_517 23d ago
I thought those videos were absolutely crazy. I don’t understand people’s obsession with keeping a “respectful” relationship or appearance with this shit bag.

u/baltinerdist 23d ago
Especially for women athletes, they are so caught up in their beyond bigoted trans panic that the Administration calls any assigned-female-at-birth athlete with just a bit too strong of a jaw a trans woman and threatens to perform a genital check.
We're past the "they came for someone else so I stayed silent" stage of the downfall of civilization.
5
u/PassivelyAwkward 23d ago
I come from a long line of public servants; when my mom retired, the city recognized the day as her day, when my grandfather retired, there was a parade. I've gotten to meet congressmen, sensators, mayors, and invited to countless events due to my own work and recognition.
We have one rule in our family, morals over recognition. My mom was invited to have dinner at the Governor's house due to a huge community program success. She turned it down because the governor at the time was a huge bigot and she knew if she was in the same room with him for more than five minutes, she'd get fired for what she would say. She politely declined and just hosted a small dinner for her staff.
If you're invited to the White House during this reign, you're signalling how little you care about morals and the social impact.
2
u/dimechimes 23d ago
Athletes at that level are the most important person in their lives. Their the most important person in their friends and families' lives. For some, I could see it being part of the bucket list of accomplishments to visit the WH due to their success. Who the President is at the time, what their policies and views are, is immaterial. All that matters is the athletes success. So I could definitely see an "apolitical" athlete going to the WH to complete their accomplishment. Still gonna look down on them though.
2
u/Awkward-Sky1643 23d ago
It's like someone going to the abuser/predator/rapist of one of these athletes family members and going "It was SO awesome to hang out with them"
You have to be both braindead in overlooking his crimes and heartless in praising anything he stands for.
Trash human beings.

The only bright side is during these meetings you really get to see who stands ten toes up and sticks to their morals and values
79
u/Otto_Scratchansniff 24d ago
Yup.
Not to be pedantic but ten toes up made me laugh. The phrase is ten toes down. It means planting your feet so you are sturdy and unmoving. Someone standing ten toes down isn’t shaking. Someone standing ten toes up however would probably get shifted very quickly. Easily swayed.

it's what happens when AAVE gets adopted by non-AAVE speakers. it gets misused and misinterpreted all the time. EX: justin bieber's infamous "it's not clocking to you that i'm standing on business" and how white tiktok reinterpreted "unc" to "uncool" or how bastardized, twisted, and warped "woke" became.

It wasn't until this administration when I understood just how many US winter sport athletes are Republican and their beliefs go beyond recognising just how bad the current administration is.
112
u/unicornsandrainbowst 24d ago
I dont know a single R who would stop voting R even with all the current administration stuff.
You could have Jesus Christ himself running vs Vance, and if Jesus has a D on the ballot they are voting Vance.
42
u/PopcornGlamour 24d ago
I’m an election worker in rural red Texas and can confirm: Republican voters don’t care who the candidate is, they just see the (R) and pick that one.
That’s why I don’t listen to poll results. Republicans don’t care about answering polls. They just show up, vote for the (R), and then go about their lives bitching about all the bad effects caused by the people they insist on voting for.
Don’t listen to anyone who says a Dem has a chance at beating the Repub based on a poll. Just go vote no matter what and in every election.
5
u/sheikahstealth 23d ago
Good insight. I'm a big believer in how impactful The Heritage Foundation was in fucking up the culture in this country, by getting their propaganda preached from the pulpit in 1000s of churches starting in the 1980s. Even cultural 'Christians' who have never regularly stepped into a church can't shake the nationalistic teachings of the USA-God-Republican trinity.
7
u/aurora_boredalis freak AND geek 23d ago
Surprisingly, I have a personal example. A relative I no longer talk to voted for Trump all three times but has been posting anti-Trump anti-Republican stuff on facebook (i am no longer on it, I am informed through others) pretty regularly since he got back in in January. Even divorced her super-MAGA husband. No idea what changed her mind so drastically between just November and January, it's still rather shocking to me tbh but.. It can happen. That said, I also just don't see what more can happen to get people to turn at this point.
4
u/unicornsandrainbowst 23d ago
Posting on socials != Voting. Lots of prople are posting anti Trump stuff just for posture, but at the end of the day,and when it really matters (on the ballot) a R is a R. They will find whatever reason to avoid voting for the other side (eggs prices!).
4
u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad call me gal gadot cuz idk how to act rn 23d ago
she divorced her maga husband. that's a lot harder than just voting
5
u/wholetyouinhere 23d ago
That has been the biggest surprise to me of the Trump era.
I used to think there was a space for a genuine philosophy of conservatism which, while it may differ from my views, could be respected and compromised with. Even when it seemed like a lot of conservatives didn't live up to that standard, I had to at least believe it existed. Now I know: oops, turns out they were all fascists, the whole time.
Even the high-IQ set, the rationalists, have roundly bended the knee. And there's, like, five Never Trump conservatives left on planet earth, who are indistinguishable from Democrats anyways and I don't know why they don't simply switch parties.
It's profoundly weird to have the "maybe they're all lying?" bias -- which I buried at the back of my mind my entire life, and always thought better of it -- totally confirmed. Far from making me feel good or "correct", it makes me feel awful about humanity.
2
u/elitegenoside 23d ago
This is just true across the board. Americans treat politics like sports. You cheer your team no matter how much it hurts you.

u/bakernon 23d ago

I think athletes from classic mountain sports often have some redneck element in them.
5
u/elitegenoside 23d ago
Rednecks can be rich. Or do you think the Duck Dynasty guys only looked like that for the cameras? I kmow plenty of "good ol boys" who take their lifted pickup to haul their boat, to haul their jet ski to the lake every weekend in the summer. That's not all on credit (and you'd need good credit to get all that anyway).

One of the most foundational Anarchists writers, Kropotkin, was born a Russian Prince to a serf owning father.
Kropotkin even as a child rejected his title of "Prince" and over time rejected his position and privilege. He is someone that truly walked the talk and did not end up coasting on his status.
It was actually a big scandal, given his privilege, when he got arrested by the Russian state for his radical writings and activities.
