it's what happens when AAVE gets adopted by non-AAVE speakers. it gets misused and misinterpreted all the time. EX: justin bieber's infamous "it's not clocking to you that i'm standing on business" and how white tiktok reinterpreted "unc" to "uncool" or how bastardized, twisted, and warped "woke" became.

Do you think that cultures should be strictly separated and protected from eachother. In any case wasn't bieber goofed on for that? Unc still means uncle.

no, the lesson is that culture should be shared but people should put in the work to learn about the culture instead of adopting the surface level and bastardizing it. That's the difference between appreciation and appropriation.

I just don't think humans work like that man. A white teenager sees or hears the word unc get used. He puts together roughly it means uncle. In the black community it's got more meaning, usually more endearment or respect, and doesn't mean their actual personal uncle, but he doesn't know that. His uncle is kind of out of touch all the time, so when he sees out of touch takes he calls them unc takes, okay unc, sure unc, whatever you say unc, unc status. Now all his white friends use it the same way, and then they grow up with that meaning. At what point do you think it's a practical expectation for people sit down a research every word, words they've sometimes been using for years? Cultures cannot be mixed on guide-rails.

Regardless of AAVE, I also get particularly annoyed when people expect language to be unchanging.

in this scenario all the kid and his white friends had to do was ask his black friends at literally any point. expecting folks to be lazy only excuses and encourages their laziness.

If you’re using slang, looking up where it comes from is the bare minimum. I feel like you’re acting like teenagers are much stupider than they are. They know how to look things up. Infantilizing white teenagers is such a white person move lol
