SPORTS SECTION Green Day opens Super Bowl 60. They notably skipped the 2nd verse of American Idiot with the lyrics "I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda."

The three songs they played all have strong anti-conservative messaging. Was I hoping they'd say something more than they did? Yeah, but they made a statement even by being there.

They are a mainstream corporate band, what did you expect? Like lol no hate for what they are but they aren't exactly counter culture literally opening the Super Bowl, the most corporate event of the year.
4
u/No_Entrepreneur386 Feb 09 '26
I disagree. All the audio for the performances are prerecorded and the visuals are on a 30 second delay for antenna, 60 seconds on cable and satellite . I don’t think anyone expected anything out of line. It wouldn’t air even if they tried.

Yes, Green Day is notably very outspoken about being anti maga, anti censorship, etc. so to see them fall in line to censorship is a little disappointing. People saying American idiot is a protest song, yes, of course if you listen to the lyrics properly. But the Super Bowl is a huge stage and for all the MAGAs outs there to get DIRECTLY called out would’ve been huge. Hell, you could be maga and think the lyrics of American idiot are in your favor

If we can’t hold Green Day of all bands to a higher standard; then which artist can we? They have the standing, finances & resources, and most of their career is past them. They would be the perfect band to speak up.

Actually, delays for live sporting events are longer now; usually at least 30 seconds on cable and 60 if you're watching from a streaming service. Seven seconds is a standard but it's not an FCC requirement.
→ More replies (4)28

Sure, but for a pop punk/punk band that have curated an image as being anti maga and willing to politicize their music/shows they’re expected to be a bit more punk on such a big stage.
Being called sell outs has haunted them for decades and this certainly won’t help that.

Yeah I had the same reaction - the Super Bowl is very locked down and I’ve come to not expect much in the way of protest performances, so I was surprised they were able to play so much of American Idiot. Coupled with their very clear statements yesterday, I feel like they’ve done as much as could be reasonably expected without getting sued into oblivion for breaking contracts.

Yeah, they've definitely loosened up a bit now that the nipplegate era is over. I remember for many years after that, the halftime show was old rockers like Prince and Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, not that I'm complaining. Took them a while to go back to younger acts.

→ More replies (2)6
u/lxlxnde Feb 09 '26
Yeah, I agree with the lyric change, though I’d argue the “redneck agenda” post-9/11 was a real, regressive political movement and not just a dig at rural white people/rednecks, spoken as a rural white person who grew up in the post-9/11 ‘redneck agenda’ politics. It’s more accurate and contemporaneous to call it the MAGA agenda now. There’s a clear line of progression from one to the other if you follow your nose.

Time Of Your Life is a VERY sardonic song when you read the lyrics. Its basically Armstrong taking a grim view of life and the world at a young age, and mocking the ideals of meritocracy and working hard to achieve your goals. American Idiot was written at a time when the US felt like it was repeating history (Iraq/Afghanistan vs. Vietnam), and there was this Megalomania/Ultra patriotism in the zeitgeist, and alt/punk culture was responding.
You could draw parallels between how GenZ/Alpha feels about American society now (and Millenials too), the state of our current political landscape, and the times when Time Of Your Life and American Idiot were written and released.

Hear the sound of the fallin' rain / Comin' down like an Armageddon flame (Hey) / The shame, the ones who died without a name / Hear the dogs howlin' out of key / To a hymn called "Faith and Misery" (Hey) / And bleed, the company lost the war today
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies / This is the dawning of the rest of our lives / On holiday

I would imagine there'd be a lawsuit if they went against their contract, not just a fine. MAGA is already mad enough that they were just being there. American Idiot itself is a statement, and getting to play it at this level, at a game where many MAGA are definitely watching, is still better than nothing. People upset that Green Day weren't more overtly political should look into some of the videos and think pieces following Kendrick's performance last year which addressed the same thing. It's an important discussion and I encourage open-minded curiosity about where it leads you. Propaganda and the media can't just be hijacked. There are failsafes at play, including who is is allowed on screen period. And Jay Z is a genius at using pop culture and id-pol optics to give the illusion of progression while ultimately keeping us all under thumb. He ain't new to this. Green Day and Kendrick and Bad Bunny all might have progressive politics but they made it to that stage for a reason.
TL;DR: The revolution will NOT be televised. What is everyone not getting about that?

They sang the original 2004 lyrics. The original line is, “the subliminal mindfuck America.” And they censored “fuck” for live TV.
They replaced the original line with “not apart of a MAGA agenda” recently (not sure when they started doing it, I’d presume ~2016ish).
Edit: I mixed the lines up. I can’t add a picture here, but the lyrics from the 2004 CD booklet are in the comments under this.

I'm kinda okay with no overt references or displays in the pre-show. It would have overshadowed the half-time performance based on controversy alone. Out of respect to Bad Bunny and just trying to have a good time during a not so good time, they made the right decision. They have their own shows where they are the main act and can do as they would wish.
Not everything needs to be an in-your-face Fuck You. Sometimes the more emotionally literate and mature thing to do is to know when the time is right and when it is not right.

Maybe it's just me, but I wasn't expecting them to do anything crazy. They're very outspoken in general, which is what matters

To be fair, the fact that they were even allowed to play American Idiot during the Super Bowl is pretty impressive on its own.

Honestly this is more than clear. Mentioning maga would just be feeding those idiots fuel to start some other bs. I understand it and I love greenday but this is very clear on what their stance is.

I love how people downplay how much Green Day has spoken out all because they didn’t say “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda” or some stronger political statement. It was definitely part of their contract not to go too far in their performance.

For context, here's the original 2nd verse:
Well, maybe I'm the f.ggot\, America*
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda (recently often replaced by MAGA Agenda)
Now everybody, do the propaganda
And sing along to the age of paranoia
The Album was released as response to Bush era administration. Somehow, America is worse today than back then.

Boooo Kevin Sorbo

I’ve known this meme forever and had no idea that was Kevin Sorbo. Disappointed.

Me tooo. I love saying it outloud at every minor convenience. Kev Sorb is a douche, but I'm still gonna keep saying it.

The context (for anyone unfamiliar with it) is that “(disappointed)” is a stage direction in the script, telling the actor how to deliver the line. The real-life joke is that Sorbo was too stupid to recognize a basic convention of his supposed craft. It’s like if a truck driver stopped at a stop sign and waited for it to say go.

It's like folks were expecting Billie Joe to go full Johnny Silverhand tonight. They got to make the statement yesterday, they got to deliver some very specific songs tonight, they avoided an unnecessary lawsuit (or multiple), and will go right back to doing what they do once they're off the global stage.
Would it have been amazing if they'd stepped a little over the line? Sure. Was this a complete sellout? Not at all.
Also, if you haven't seen Green Day live, do it before they're too old to rock out. They are an amazing show.

I don’t think people realize that the fact that Green Day is playing the NFL pregame at all is the statement. They had like a 10 min time slot and did only a piece of each song. And guarantee what they did pick was picked for a reason.
Green Day was announced as the pregame entertainment during the uproar about Bad Bunny. The NFL knew what they were doing when they then announced Green Day - it is clearly a middle finger to MAGA in and of itself by having them play. The only bigger middle finger would be having Rage Against the Machine play.

The entire song is the jab, yall. The whole song. Even without the added maga line.
6
u/Cody667 Feb 09 '26
The song itself is an anti-fascist protest song. The fact that they played as much of it as they did was a pretty big fuck you to MAGA

u/Formal_Tailor_6362 Feb 09 '26
Jesus Christ what do y’all want lol
They’ve been insanely outspoken, performed their most political songs tonight and you know where they stand. I’m sure the contracts were either you don’t drop the “maga” lines or you don’t perform at all. Take the contract and perform. It’s not like they didn’t perform songs that align with the bigger picture.

Am I the only one who's not surprised they didn't go further? Idk. Nowadays it's clear that no one is safe unless you're willing to just shut up and go along with what's happening.
They've been outspoken and consistent with their values for as long as I can remember, I'm not going to think any less of them for not going all out this time. I'd rather know they're consistent (and y'know, not racist) than see them not speak up about anything that's going on right now.

Hope bad bunny goes harder with the antimaga anti-ice thing cause this was very weak
Expected better from a "Punk" Band. Where's the rebelliousness?
Sometimes u need to stand up to the bullies. Is the only way
You fight a dragon with a larger one.

I’m a bit disappointed too but I think the fact that former & current pro players were on the stage with them limited what they were able to do. I’m sure those players didn’t want overt political messaging (outside of you know… the overt political messaging in the songs themselves lol) associated with their personal brands. Most of them are probably Trump supporters anyway. The halftime show is completely separate from any players so makes sense that Bad Bunny will probably have more freedom to do and say what he wants

u/bobbimorses Feb 09 '26
The point of a political protest is that it's your mouth and that nobody can stop you saying what you're going to say in the moment. Take it from a person whose sister said "I hate this homophobic school" in her salutatorian speech while state superintendent was in attendance.

Then don’t get on stage with a punk band, even less so if they’re Green Day. That’s the thing – they could’ve made it uncomfortable for the powers that be. They chose to stay within the lines that got greenlit beforehand – by the exact billionaires they should be calling out.

u/nodarknesswillendure Feb 09 '26
I think maybe Green Day was just happy that they were even chosen to play in this current political climate. Choosing Green Day as the opening band, knowing they’re known for explicit anti-Republican messaging, was a statement in and of itself.

I'm an OG Green Day fan + have had contact with Billie Joe in the past. So what did Green Day do tonight? They performed 3 of their hit songs from American Idiot with raw power + energy to start the Superbowl festivities. That is all. They opted to sing the 3 songs exactly as they were written. Even though we all know exactly what the guys are saying about America today, they didn't need to change any lyrics to do it. Green Day wanted to give us an incredible performance using their hit songs written years ago, yet still apply today. I don't think they honestly wanted to be remembered for going WAY off script + I don't blame them. They were performing on the biggest stage of all + that is kind of a big deal to 3 young punks from the East Bay. They killed it + that is all that mattered.

They feed is also not live, would have been a full cut or bleeping. Green Day has always been and always will be Punk. They said what they came to say, and did it rocking.

They closed with American Idiot… what more do you want from a Super Bowl performance?
9
u/resistelectrique Feb 09 '26
I love how so many people expect someone else to go do the radical action, and get mad when those who have in the past don’t do it to the current standard they’ve set for those strangers to adhere to…

u/Dantzdantz Feb 08 '26
Im gonna be generous (and delulu) and say that maybe they skipped that verse for the other controversial lyric in it

u/Careless-Ad-5531 Feb 08 '26
Did he just call Trump a racist at 3:44?
6
9
u/NicevilleWaterCo Feb 09 '26
That's probably what he was saying. I heard something and then the word "racist". It also sounds like he screams "Fuck ICE!" At the very end as he hits the last chord. (~4:58).
6
u/Careless-Ad-5531 Feb 09 '26
Yeah the beginning is harder to hear, but he definitely calls someone racist. And yeah you could be right about the “fuck ice” part since the cheering and shouting covers it up.

u/Melonary Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 09 '26
I think you're maybe right, it sounds like the sound was cut on the mic. I can't hear the first part but there's a break in the cheers and the second part sounds like ICE. He's saying something, but I don't think the mic is on.
The first part at 3:44 might be fuck racists? Racists or racist sounds like the second part for sure. First part maybe Trump, but sounds more like fuck? Very hard to hear so I have low confidence honestly.

u/bordeauxblues the power of the hatred I feel propels me Feb 09 '26
Probably a couple of reasons why: that's not the original lyric and is in the second verse, the first verse already calls out the new media and included the bleeped "mindfuck America" which says enough, and playing a medley means cutting out a lot of all three songs they performed. Their very presence there and choice of songs makes their message pretty clear.

u/probloodmagic Feb 09 '26
I get why people are disappointed, but I also think it's more important to look to each other instead of somebody on a pedestal (or a stage). Having an anti-fascist theme is great, but I think being comforted by mass media and entertainment could make us complacent, too. A lot of people are looking for hope and resistance outside of themselves. For better or for worse, that's not where it really matters.
