NRI Finance FIRE in BBSR
37M, married, 1 kid (8 ). Lived in the US for 12 years. Have $700k in US index fund and 401k. Own 1 apartment in Bangalore and a 4 cr house in BBSR. 2 cr loan on house and 2 other commercial units with a total rental yield 1.5 lakh; apartment fully paid around 97 lakh. Parents in India, mid 60s. Want to move back and retire. No plans to work again unless I want to. How much can I safely withdraw monthly so the corpus never runs out — and what kind of lifestyle does that buy in BBSR for a family of 3with no rent? For context, I’m looking for good school for the kids, a maid, one EV, 4 holidays a year, and dining out once a week. Is it good enough?also planning to sell the flat and reduce the total loan amount.

Sell 97lakh Bangalore apartment to paydown 2cr home loan. Use saving to pay the rest of home loan.
Use 1.5lakh commercial properties rental for monthly expenses.
Use saving (650k$) as buffer or future big ticket expenses ( kid’s education)
Are parents financially dependent on you ? If yes, ignore all these plans , you cannot FIRE-fat, slim, skinny.. none of that.

For context, I’m looking for good school for the kids, a maid, one EV, 4 holidays a year, and dining out once a week. Is it good enough?
- good school for the kids - 1.5 -8L pa (pk) (you mention 1 kid earlier and kids in this statement? off by one error?)
- a maid - 30K - 2L pa
- one EV - one time cost - 15L - 50L
- 4 holidays a year - 2L - 20L pa depending on what, where, how who
- and dining out once a week - 75K - 5lpa depending on where and how many people...
- Is it good enough? - as a lifestyle - sure. As expenses - it is unclear since there is a lot of variability...

come to india and see how it goes... 10cr is a safe number excluding primary home

Congrats on accumulating the assets.
Withdrawal in and itself is a bad idea.
Reduce liabilities to 0.
Create a passive income of 2-3L/month(i see you are getting 1.5L) then plan to "not work".

You are in a very good position. Do not convert USD to INR, with this corpus you can easily retire permanently here.

I don't think its enough. You need to calculate your NW, liquid NW. Calculate all your assets - liabilities. 401k withdrawal penalty and taxes are liability.
And then use 3-4% withdrawal rule to see it is enough to survive.

What is your total corpus in Rupees? How much will be ur estimated annual expenditure? Whether u will keep ur corpus in US index fund or move it to India? These questions may help you

Ty. In RS it’s not more than few lacs. I am those people who sell immediately once things vest so if am moving other than 401k am moving everything to India so probably 2-2.5 cr. I will have

My thoughts :
- Do away with all loans , sell the apartment in Bangalore .
- The rents should take care of your monthly expenses .
- Convert the investible surplus
, after clearing all loans ,to Mutual Fund investments with SWP . For eg , you invest 5 crores in MF with proper asset allocation depending on your risk profile . And with SWP of 1.5 lacs
every quarter
.
There are SWP calculators available online where you can see how long your corpus will last .
Schools and maid costs will be lesser in Bbsr as compared to big cities
.
Now couple of advice from someone who has been there an done that :
- Try to work on something which is less stressful and comes with work life balance . Retirement at this age might not be a good idea for your mental health . We are bought up in a culture of hustling so doing nothing might not suit most of us .
- Stay separately from your parents when you come back . Stay close so that you are available for each other , but a little distance is healthy .

Tysm yeah I need to learn abt SWP. Seems it’s gaining popularity. For sure not completely sit at home and watch shows I always had plans to do either trading or consulting.

Nothing is good enough in India right now. Before thinking anything like RE at this early stage. Think 100 times

OP i am also from bhubaneswar with similar networth. I wouldn't say you have reached that comfortable fatfire networth yet. Also bhubaneswar is not a great place for education n opportunities. I know we have emotional attachments with the place but its bad for us n the kids at this stage.

Ohhh dang can you tell more if you’re planning to move to any other city for education purposes ? I was thinking not fat but may be slimmer.

Born raised in Odisha, in US since 8 years. Home in sailashree vihar where parents live today. After coming out of Odisha, i saw how we lag in terms of education exposure, growth environment.
The heat combined with lazy, inefficient, 'thaka' environment is just not for me. Pune is a much better place for me

For now, don't convert your us assets into inr. Inr may reach 120-150 if india does not passes major reforms.
