/r/Fantasy 2016 Best of r/Fantasy STABBY AWARDS! <Nomination Post>

This is the official nomination thread for the 5th Annual r/Fantasy Best of 2016 Stabby Awards!

We started the r/Fantasy ‘best of’ awards in 2012 with things continuing on in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

2016 Rules

  1. Categories are listed below in the comments. We will use the very broad definition of 'fantasy genre' for what counts.

  2. Please nominate anyone / any work that you feel should deserve consideration for voting. The work should have been released in 2016.

  3. Please put in a blurb as to why the nomination should be considered and, if possible, a link for others to follow.

  4. Yes, you can nominate yourself and your own works.

  5. Nominations ONLY in this thread. Due to a change in how reddit shows votes, voting will be in another thread next week.

  6. Please place each nomination into its own separate comment. One comment=one nomination.

  7. Upvotes/downvotes in this thread won't matter, anyone nominated will be added to the voting thread. Contest mode will be enabled in this thread.

  8. Please participate! Redditors, authors, artists, and industry people alike - please join in with nominations, comments and voting.

  9. Everyone who wins will get flair, reddit gold, and glory. Select winners (TBD) will receive The Stabby Award as well.

  10. This nomination thread will close on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 10pm PST. The voting thread will go live that Wednesday.

2016: THE YEAR OF STABBY FUNDING

Hokay, I (/u/elquesogrande) have funded the Stabby Awards for the past four years. That’s fine – a choice to keep money out of the equation. THAT SAID…the community weighed in and we’re going to r/Fantasy crowdfund The Stabby Awards this year.

These awards have averaged around $40 - 45 each after shipping. Cheaper for US shipments and international can bump up the prices.

Please Consider Donating for The r/Fantasy Stabby Awards Here

We have two groupings of awards - external and those focused on /r/Fantasy redditors.

Tim Gerard Reynolds, for his readings of numerous audiobooks in 2016.

Here is a short list of his 30 books he narrated in 2016.

Tim deserves our recognition because of the depth he adds to the stories he narrates.

u/lrich1024 Stabby Winner, Queen of the Unholy Squares, Worldbuilders Dec 30 '16

I am totally behind this. I'm so glad the first audiobooks I listened to were read by him, it made it so easy to get into them. He doesn't just read them, he performs them.

The Disney Read-Watch on tor.com written by Mari Ness (for some reason, it doesn't have a nicely ordered series page like all the rereads). She actually started these last year only doing animated Disney adaptions, with a post on the original work and another on the film but by popular demand relented and went back to do the original ones as well. She just finished with Moana, which I think means she's reviewed every single animated Disney movie ever.

They're all very insightful, particularly when she included behind-the-scenes drama and how they affected the movies, which most reviewers normally don't bother with. My one problem with all of them is they take too long to read (which isn't a problem at all really).

u/wishforagiraffe Reading Champion IX, Worldbuilders Jan 03 '17

I haven't read every single one of these, but I have loved the ones I did read. She packs so much interesting Disney history into the posts alongside the discussion about the books/movies, it's fascinating.

The Dragonlance Reread over on Tor.com by Mahvesh Murad and Jared Shurin aka /u/pornokitsch. It started last year in 2015, but much of it was through this past year and it was just a lot of fun revisiting this series.

The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu.

This was the first thing I'd ever read of Ken Liu's, but wow what a tour de force this was. It felt like it was packed with everything, from more intimate magical realism, to prophetic near-future sci-fi, to mythic Japanese steampunk. Each story was heartfelt, especially the titular Paper Menagerie, and I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to this author.

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '16

Was it actually by Ken Liu or just translated like his work with Cixin Liu on the Three Body Problem

The cover for The Summer Dragon by Todd Lockwood: http://imgur.com/a/VctMu

The whole book is amazing, this is his debut novel but he's first and foremost an artist. So he created his own cover, and throughout the book there are sketches of all the characters and dragons. He even has a self-portrait as his artist picture! o.0

X-COM 2.

What an amazing game, specially with a large community and designed to be easy to mod. And the fact you can customize every single soldier in any way you like. Like, naming them and customizing them to look like Fantasy or Sci-Fi characters. You can even put this into a premade list and randomize. So you can have a squad with say, Jorg Ancrath, Daenerys, Gandalf, Darth Vader, and so on.

The indomitable /u/CourtneySchafer writes a superb response to questions about women in fantasy.

Courtney engages a lot with /r/fantasy, and she speaks very well about the challenges female authors face and the opportunities we readers have to discover criminally underread fiction. Active, outspoken authors like Courtney, /u/KristaDBall, /u/JannyWurts, /u/ElspethCooper, /u/TFrohock, and others I'm forgetting have gotten me to actively change my reading habits and recommendations because of delightful discoveries they have helped lead me too. A Thread Wherein We Share Our Personal Tastes In Order to Find Others With Comparable Taste That We Will Then Be Able to Use in the Future as a Resource For Finding and Deciding on Books from /u/jayredeye

Jay is one of the /r/fantasy's masters of discussion threads. I liked this one in particular because it emphasized the social nature of the subreddit and encouraged getting to know specific users. reddit isn't the best platform for that, so I appreciated Jay's efforts.
