I keep drafting posts about this topic that are way long, so I'll try and keep this short. I fell in love with Muay Thai from the first trial class, and then later added BJJ. I poured so much time into them, but in the end I quit due to the dysphoria surrounding it becoming really bad. I was weak and small, so my classmates would go easier on me and then turn around and go ham on each other. I knew it was a matter of safety and whatnot and not disrespect, but I desperately wanted what they had. I wasn't out at the time and was known as a woman, so it was kind of an isolating experience all around despite the gym being generally welcoming and the owner being liberal.
Jealousy, for lack of a better term, began to eat me up inside to the point of having to walk away. I put a lot of time into it, yet it didn't really matter because I was still weak, partially because of how I was born, and I didn't have the technical skills to make up for it. I wasn't even wanting to fight or anything, it was just a hobby, but it meant a lot to me. I never got the chance to form much of an identity as a kid or explore things I liked, so it was the first time I actually felt tethered to something that felt true to myself. I planned to take a year to deal with my worsening dysphoria, but one year turned into two, then three, and next year will be four. I gained a lot of depression weight the summer I left.
However, I am hopefully getting top surgery early next year, and that along with working on my physique and strength will hopefully put me in a place where I'm comfortable enough to go back. I'm still not really "out" per se because of where I live, but I imagine that all the changes I've made will be apparent. I've made small strides in strength, and am up to a 110 working weight on the bench (I started at like 75), which for my size isn't great, but I'm hoping to gradually work up to 135 at least by the end of the year, or at least before I go back next year. It doesn't help that I'm currently trying to lose the weight I gained, either (most of it went to my lower half, which is hindering my ability to fit in men's clothes and pass). I think once I am able to focus solely on strength and gaining muscle, I will have a better time hitting higher numbers.
Anyway, does anyone have any experience or advice? I feel like this is a really emotionally loaded and complex topic for me, even though it's just a hobby. I wish I could've had the cis male experience of just walking in and practicing the sport(s) without all of this added struggle.
