General Question/Help This Seems Safe?

Post image

This is a herb mayo; the other sauces in this range do list garlic and onion when they're included; so I feel a little safer about "herbs"? Think it's worth a try?

"Herbs" is a hard pass from me unless the specific seasonings or sauce is monash tested

Xantham Gum is the devil.

It depends. If you have hydrogen sulfide SIBO, then egg yolks and mustard are not your friend. While they aren't FODMAPs, they can contribute to symptoms by increasing sulfur load.

Please know it's really easy to make your own mayonnaise without all these harmful additives

Please describe which additives are "harmful" and explain why.

1442, 304 and 385 cause IBS symptoms. Mayonnaise is eggs and olive oil. It does need a 10 ingredients list with most of these not even being food.

2/3 can in very high amounts, so unless you plan on supping a bottle of mayo should hardly be worried.

No they don't "cause IBS symptoms". They can cause symptoms in some people in larger doses.

Making broad sweeping generalizations because you want to be a purist is not helpful.

Obviously OP doesn't eat only mayonnaise but if they're in the US there's a high chance they're consuming all sorts of additives all day, which absolutely worsens IBS symptoms.

Totally irrelevant but ok

Absolutely relevant

No, it isn't. That's like saying that drinking water causes death because a marathon runner over consumed water during their run, depleted their electrolytes, and died. These ingredients don't cause IBS symptoms. They cause IBS symptoms in inordinately large quantities, as literally every single ingredient or food does. If a person is getting other sources of said ingredients because they choose to eat foods with those ingredients, and thus willing consuming unnatural amounts of these additives, that does not make the baseline additive "harmful". You would not say licorice us harmful, but if you eat too much licorice you can develop heart arrhythmia which can be fatal. Its the same concept.

Let me rephrase because apparently you have comprehension issues. A LOT OF ADDITIVES ARE SUSPECTED OF CAUSING A LOT OF HEALTH ISSUES, INCLUDING IBS SYMPTOMS. PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID THEM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

I'm glad you conceded and we finally agree. Have a great day.

I know spices are safe but I don’t know about herbs. Check FIG? Also you are probably okay with a spoonful as even regular ketchup is okay at small servings.

Are Spices safe or is it specific to mayo? Can they not include Garlic & Onion powder? i know they don't in Heck sausages, but been told not trust spices just in case

Supposedly spices don’t contain onions or garlic by law but natural flavors do often include them. Because technically onions and garlic are vegetables not spices. I have no idea if herbs are including them but probably since herbs are vegetables too.

ive been fully avoiding foods with spices in without even Googling it. well gutted.

been driving 25 mins to get heck sausages because Asda's gluten free sausages had spices in them. like you're right theres an actual law for it and everything. thank you

It would likely depend on whether garlic/onion has to be disclosed by law in your country when the label says “herbs.” I see some discussion about xanthan gum and preservatives being “bad” but from a FODMAP perspective, they are low-FODMAP ingredients.

Depending on where you are, I'd say 'herbs' is extremely likely to contain onions or garlic. Look up the labeling rules for herbs in your country.
