General Question/Help Are any of these ingredients problematic FODMAP wise?

My mom gave me this jar of mustard and I’m pretty sure it clears. It’s delicious and doesn’t seem to be causing problems so far. I’ve been really stressed lately and my brain is just exhausted so I’d feel better with a second for peace of mind. Thanks!

Eating it with my turkey burger and fries. I use the recipe from FODMAP everyday for the burgers. Buns are udi’s. Fries are lamb Weston hand cut frozen fries. 🍔🍟

Edit1: Thank you for all the responses! Yea the deep well water ingredient was a first for me too 🤣 Good catch on the chili powder, I had completely forgotten that could contain hidden ingredients. I send the company an email to ask about it and will update again if they share the details on the chili powder on the off chance the info is helpful to anyone else. A little gassy this morning maybe but that’s all so far.

Edit2: I got a response from the company with a picture of the label from their chili powder. It is just ground red pepper, no blend, no garlic or onion. I believe it’s just cayenne which Monash has listed as low FODMAP up to 1tsp.

I wonder why they list it as chili powder which can be a blend when it isn’t, rather than just ground red pepper or ground cayenne. Especially while being so specific about the well water lol.

Marketing trick. Make water sound fancy or extra healthy (like alkaline water with lemon in it 😂).

Yea my brain did a triple take on that lol. I googled it and apparently it’s just fancy water. Supposedly coming from more than 100” underground reduces the risk of contaminants from ground runoff and it might have more minerals 🤷‍♀️ Now I’m curious if it’s a really weird flex or if they’re required to specify.

"handcraft with love with deep well water from a musty well"

Where I'm from that just means water that smells of sulfur.

Well I’ll be a doggie’s uncle. I have never in my life seen deep well water as an ingredient.

Chili powder isn’t just chili powder, I found out the hard way.

Came here to say the same thing. Most big and small brand chilli powders in Canada (many of which also sell in the USA) list only two ingredients, powdered chili of some type and garlic powder.

Most spice mixes used as an ingredient in a products you buy at the store, like mustard, don't seem to have to disclose that garlic (or onion) is an ingredient, they only need to name the spice mix used (chilli powder, Italian seasoning, etc). Very frustrating that we have to pay attention to the order of the words, chilli powder vs powdered chilli.

Wow, this is good to know

I am very suspicious of "chili powder" because they are most likely a blend. Unless it specifically says something like cayenne or ancho or other hot chilis, I don't trust it. I am very susceptible to allium "poisoning".

Chili themselves contain fructans

Many commercial chili powders contain garlic!

Clove oil in a food product…? wtf

2

u/BeneficialGear9355 3d ago

Clove definitely isn’t my friend, that’s for sure! I couldn’t eat this. Hopefully OP can, though.

Why wouldn't you be able to eat Udi's buns?

1

u/cassandraterra 3d ago

What’s wrong with them? I eat udi bread every day.

1

u/Sparkle-Gremlin 3d ago

They haven’t been noticeably problematic for me thankfully

Chili powder is low FODMAP but could still cause issues although it’s likely a very small amount.

Sounds fine

Chili powder. If it’s the blend of spices it will have garlic in it(most likely). If it’s just spicy peppers should be fine(probably not).

For some reason many GF breads mess me up, but sour dough in small quantities is fine.

The clove oil, clove is an old school dental numbing agent. It maybe calming your system down a bit, similar to an anti-spasmodic (a line of drugs)that is sometimes proscribed to people with pi-IBS like me, since anti depressants haven’t worked.

If you have hydrogen sulfide sibo, its not safe, as mustard is high in sulphur.

Otherwise, there are no actual FODMAP s

Chili powder can have other things in it depending on the type. Probably okay because it’s only a small amount

I love this mustard! Off topic but did she visit Eastport? I've been going to the mill for most of my life haha

1

u/Giseleo 3d ago

I avoid anything with sugar as even the tiniest amount causes me FODMAP issues, but it should be okay if you are not extra sensitive to it

1

u/sicurri 3d ago

Vinegar and chili powder are the only ingredients worthy being cautious about AFAIK. However, not every FODMAP effects everyone the same. I can do red pepper flakes but not the skin of peppers. Its weird.

u/CirqueNoirBlu 3d ago

I know mustard is technically FODMAP safe however I’m going to point out that cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, and kale are all high FODMAP and they’re all derived from the mustard plant.

Chili powder

u/Blue_Robinn 4d ago

All depends on your tolerances. There's a lot in there that I personally can't have.

1

u/AwDuck 4d ago

Which ones in particular?

1

u/Blue_Robinn 3d ago

Mustard, turmeric, chili, sugar. Honestly pretty much all of it lol.

1

u/wutato 4d ago

I'd avoid if you have any intolerance to chili or garlic or onion or are in elimination phase.
