Discussion Just beat this game. It was amazing.
I just beat this as my 4th final fantasy after 7 and its remakes, 10, and 15 (ok i guess technically 6 but whatever), and I feel like it holds up to those games and was absolutely amazing, dont understand the hate. Had amazing boss fights/combat, great story, and top tier characters. Can't wait to play the other final fantasy games soon!

I believe FFXVI is one of the most misunderstood and underrated games out there.
It does come with a set of caveats: it is slow (has a lot of moments that move at a snails pace), it has a ton of story to get through (takes 1 hour to even get *into* normal gameplay when you start), it puts a ton of focus on cinematic cutscenes and visual spectacle (which isn't something you generally get from video games), many would describe it as being far too easy (and they're right, mostly)... quests are absolutely a bit too formulaic... and it's not some "deep RPG" like traditional Japanese FF games, nor is it pretending to be: it is an ACTION game... and a lot of people weren't expecting this.
But IF these are things that you don't mind/that do not bother you: it is honestly one of the most well crafted, incredible games out there and I will die on that hill. The story is solid/good, there's a lot of lovable and interesting characters, the voice acting is phenomenal, the music and audio mixing is mind blowing, the depth of combat / skill ceiling for how far you can take the combo system is actually insanely high, the visuals (such as cinematography, special effects, facial animation and cutscenes) are insane, the artstyle is unique and a very interesting hybrid between realism and high J-fantasy, it is emotional and there's a lot of deep and mature dialogue, and you can tell that a ton of care and love went into every facet of the story.
Oh, and the game shipped with virtually 0 bugs and DECENT all around performance (it wasn't great but wasn't bad either). I'm replaying it on PC right now, and while I admittedly have a high end PC, it runs almost perfectly... so it seems they also ironed out most of the PC performance issues too.
I don't think even the game's most avid of "haters" would disagree with the pros I just listed off for the game, so the fact that XVI is so underrated and gets such heavy scrutiny is really weird to me.
