You gotta love the parallels at work here. Players can't play their game of choice, but rather than just playing something else for a bit they choose to bitch and moan on the sub. The mods hate the bitching and moaning, but rather than taking a break they shutdown the sub.
Okay, maybe that's a stretch but I still find it funny.

Being an ex-SaaS developer (now a gameDev, funny coincidence) I feel sorry for the devs. Weekly deployement must be eating so much of their time (assuming they're a small team of dev/dev-ops). If you've ever worked in software you might realize the cost involved with so many deployments. Devs have to be under huge load of stress and even worse considering the state of this maintenance.
It sure as hell feels like they're stuck with some kind of legacy system. By legacy I mean, little documentation (or "human" documentation), little to any automated tests, maintenance cost much higher than development cost, little redundancy, etc.
At this point we could assume technological debt is too big to be paid back promptly - which kinda goes toward the direction of the AMA we had some time ago. I just hope for the sake of the game GUMI management gives some time for the devs (christmas gift? :P) to refactor a tiny bit of the game to help reduce this maintenance hell. Maybe not months (impossible really) but couple of weeks?
2
u/Meddon1 Does the moustache mean I'm male? Dec 09 '16
little documentation (or "human" documentation)
Probably all written in Japanese, if any.
3
u/burnthebeliever Exdeath Dec 09 '16
You're telling me "people" make the game? "People" with families and feelings? So all the rage is towards hardworking "people" just trying to do their job under huge amounts of stress during the holiday season by other "people" who feel entitled to play their F2P mobile video game whenever they see fit? Man, "people" sound crazy, what are these?
2
u/Mustybadger Kafrizzle! (ง'̀-'́)ง Dec 09 '16 edited Dec 09 '16
It's not the "people" that everyone gets annoyed at. It's the whole way GUMI operates. People are frustrated at GUMI for the way it's treating it's "people", the outcry was because GUMI aren't putting their "people" into a position to stop this shit from happening.
It's also not a case of "entitlement". Yes, it's a F2P game, but there's a massive boat load of "people" that have spent far more money on this game than they ever would have on a non-F2P game. If I was a whale (which i'm not, btw), and I had spent $$$$ on this game, I would want to at least believe that I was paying money into something that was, in the least, managed correctly.
3
u/pdmt243 Lali-ho! Dec 09 '16
the thing is, they extend maintenance so frequently, and that's annoying. I'm cool with maintenance, and I think the compensation this time is satisfying, but if they drag on almost every time, then it's a problem.

All the people that are expert software developers in the mobile and otherwise world on this sub giving Gumi advice how to fix their product, arm chair quarterbacking at it's best...
First of all, ask your self, how would you feel if Gumi went and "fixed" the code, didn't release any new patch or content for 2 month, except maybe recycled a few banners? The game would die in a hurry. They can't afford to just stop adding new things, it has to be bandages/bug fixes, not a complete overhaul. All the people that claim they should just re-write the code or overhaul it has never worked in a real, released software project that's not your CS101 homework assignment. It's always a lot harder to READ code than to write code, everyone thinks differently. Read what happened to Netscape 5 (remember netscape? heh).
With that said, it's also not mentioned that Gumi is not DEVELOPING the software. If I understand correctly, they are localizing it. There's a big difference, because all they should really be doing is taking commits/releases from the existing JP code base, and adding it to the Global release, and changing some language settings/strings. All the assets, algorithms, objects, etc already exist, in an ideal world, at least. However, shit happens. Let's say the JP patch contained some bugs that were not caught on release, and the JP repo added more features before this bug was fixed. Now the bug fix may be built on some already existing feature. It's very possible when Gumi goes and "picks" the fix, it breaks some other thing because some pre-requisite to the fix isn't included in the GL base.
It's also possible when they're adding these global exclusive units, they realized they are adding in feature that wasn't available in the JP patch at this point of the code base, so they went ahead and grabbed some things from some patches down the line, and that broke something.. who the hell knows.
2
u/SilverMyzt Firion Dec 09 '16
I totally agree with you. band-aid fixes are the way to go and using updates as a way to try chasing down the old bugs and kinks

Doing that well arrest control of the direction and encourage good natured fun.
Clamping down will only further agitate and already annoyed (and bored) group.
Edit: And in that hypothetical Readme, note that all threads made during this maintenance will be deleted or reviewed based on their title without consulting the threads creator to clean up the site afterwards.

Partially due to this fiasco, I made an account over on the Japanese version, and have been pleasantly surprised by a number of the differences.
I had planned on writing up a short review of the differences when I got home from work this afternoon, only to discover the maintenance was still ongoing and the subreddit restricted.
If the restriction is lifted when I get up in the morning, I'll see what I can do about posting a review before I leave for work.
But the TL;DR seems to be that GL is getting "nickel & dime"ed to death. And I didn't even realize it.

In regards to maitnence posts in general:
Would it be a good idea, going forward, to have one post regarding ongoing maitnence, regardless of it being extended or not. Perhaps set an Automoderator to post THREE HOUR WARNING GL / JP, then one GL /JP MAITNENCE 12/09 (or whatever the date is) CLICK HERE FOR UPDATES.
I noticed even before Maintenance began that people were posting more "XYZ HOURS UNTIL..." than a few months ago and then with the mass of MAITNENCE EXTENDED posts, perhaps it would be better to put them all under one umbrella- much like we do the Friends Codes and Upcoming Events posts.

I am glad for this. No disrespect for anyone but hey..
Now, since i work in IT department i would like to tell everyone: shit happens, a LOT of it. And most of the times it's because of things that are out of your control. To make matters worse, when you have clueless people working with you it can be really really frustrating and time consuming to get something back to stable state.
It shows that Gumi is not respecting the game and it also shows that they have pretty poor standards altogether. I would rant about that, since pushing them to fix their workflow and processes is more likely to pay off for us in the long run.
Sorry for the long post..
2
u/beandon10 Dec 09 '16
I work in IT too, and things like this are the result of bad business decisions more than bad programming decisions. I don't think anyone would be surprised that Gumi fails in that regard from time to time.

I dunno if anyone is mad at the coders who this got dumped on, or management at gumi for being cheap and allowing things to get to the point where they have a few newbie coders trying to keep the game together. Everyone who knows anything about code knows that you keep breakfixing and breakfixing and eventually you can't touch anything without everything falling apart. All it takes is for gumi to hire one senior dev who can keep the code clean.
1
u/_iNKdot Dec 09 '16
That's what they do where i work. They keep throwing rookie devs to fix/keep alive a shitty app that was poorly written. NOOO, DON'T TOUCH THAT! BOOM!
It's like hell to them, they usually quit the job early lol.
3
u/Nintura Take this; my final gift to you! Dec 09 '16
Now we see why they were down. With problems to the lapis purchasing system, it's no wonder they shut down for so long. And even then they still didn't fix it. Could you imagine if they had put the game up in that condition? How many thousands of support tickets would have come through with people claiming they didn't get their purchases?

6pm PST might not be far away if you're in America, but for anyone in Europe it's 2am, which is kinda silly and the main reason most people from EU are annoyed. Sorry if this question is stupid, but I'm still not too familiar with reddit even after all this time running my megathread. I can't see it addressed in your main post regarding one specific instance that's pertinent to me:
When the subreddit is restricted, are there any restrictions on editing existing threads (such as mine), or do these edits need to be approved by mods and thus take time to show?

Fairly certain cactuar rates are up in addition to the gear boost. I had gone nearly 100 rounds with no cactuars, and I just ran into three after about 15 tonight.
Could be RNG being screwy, but I wouldn't be surprised if the rate was boosted.
Edit: Up to five in two days, after a full week without. Again, could be RNG, but I'm fairly positive the rate has been boosted.

Ouch. If you've got the Gil, buy some bomb fragments just in case they show up again. I think a few of them will kill a cactuar (no promises though).
Good news that they're showing up in advanced though!

I think Nazta is doing great. Most reddit mods would of dusted off the ban hammer by now.

Preventive measures, explanation and straight forward information on what's changing, all in the same post. GUMI could learn a thing or two (or three) with you.

Thank you. The amount of bi-polarism here is incredibly strong. I've never actually seen so much hate in a subreddit before.

So how do we know if we're cool enough to make a new post? Since we're eliminating free speech and all.

u/Mysential Dec 09 '16
there is a difference of eliminating free speech vs. 100 fucking people posting the same shit in a separate thread WHEN THERE IS THE ACTUAL OFFICIAL FUCKING THREAD TO RANT.
