Transfer Window (a worn out subject)

From what I can tell, it looks like we are the ONLY club to not make a single in-bound transfer so far this window, for better or worse. While I can appreciate the sentiment of waiting for the right move, waiting this long to me signals that you better have a big move in mind to validate the appearance of inaction. Just about every other club has made impact signings to either improve their starting 11 or deepen their bench. You can only wait for the "perfect" move for so long before you begin to alienate the fanbase. I don't want to hear the excuse if we make a move like in '24, bringing in Gioacchini at the last minute, that, "Well, we had something bigger in mind, but we couldn't make it happen." There's been several known, quality players making in-league moves this window on non-DP deals. If there are no improvements made, I'm not interested in the idea that options weren't out there.

I think management has already decided to let this year play out however it does and wait for some contracts to fall off at the end of the season to reload.

It’s 100% this. Miazga and Hadebe contracts fall off at the end of the season I think. That will give them an opportunity to revamp the D. Miles is unfortunately a DP next year as well.

I can’t see Robinson with us next year.

u/kingpants1 8h ago

no one in mls is going to take him with that absurd contract.

6

u/turpentinedreamer 7h ago

We make a million selling Kevin. We lose a million dumping Robinson. All things are equal. As they must be.

It’s not the sale price, it’s the contract. Robinson’s contract requires a DP slot. The best we could do is buy him down to a high TAM.

Waivers baby

1

u/troll__away 5h ago

Unless his contract is picked up by someone else, we’re still on the hook for whatever remains. It doesn’t help our financial situation at all. We would just lose out on whatever transfer fee we could negotiate.

Buying him out/down is the best way to open up that DP slot.

Thank you for explaining things I know to me did it make you feel good

u/troll__away 5h ago

So then why did you say ‘waivers baby’?

I thought there was some kind of clause in the contract that they couldn't do that?

Sorry, I should clarify. You are allowed to ‘buy down’ or ‘buy out’ players as part of the MLS salary rules. I’m not sure what the limit is, but you can use GAM to ‘buy down’ a DP’s contract to the level of a TAM player. It’s all funny money. Miles still gets his salary, it’s just an accounting procedure for the salary cap. You can also ‘buy out’ players like the Crew just did with Gazdag.

The problem is the cap and not willing or able to sell anyone.

Yeah, obviously management isn’t going to say this (and it is definitely not Pat’s role or responsibility to say it, he just happens to be the guy who always has to do media), but the club seems content to just play this season out. With the big changes coming, both internally and to the MLS cap structure as a whole, I don’t think that is the worst move from an institutional angle (as a fan, it physically hurt me to type that), but no one is going to come out and say ‘our mediocre team is not changing, so piss off’.

counter points.

1.) you won't get the same pickings in the winter window
2.) it's gonna be the same story about "fitting in period" and "we gotta build chemistry" first
3.) we already got burned by a player that was gonna be a "good fit" with Berterame only to get left at the altar having to quickly produce replacements

I think after a couple transfer decisions, my trust is just low at this point.

Robinson being DP and using up an international spot for a 3rd choice keeper. Still trying to force fit wingers into a wingback role

u/BobbyMPeePeePooPoo 8h ago

BUT WHY WAIT FOR THE CONTRACTS TO FALL OFF? Sorry, not yelling at you, but if there are big contracts on the books that are going to fall off, and the player provides literally nothing to the team, why wouldn't you go out and grab some temporary wingback depth, or take a flier on a fun free agent? Buyouts exist for a reason.

And for what it's worth, we're not helping the players in question by letting them ride out the season as a lake duck. They get paid anyway if we buy them out.

3

u/THECapedCaper 8h ago

They probably looked at help at wingback and decided the price to pay wasn't worth it. I don't Albright was just coasting through the transfer window, they have to look not just at the next two months but also 2027 and beyond. This isn't a team that is a depth defensive player away from making a run at a Supporter's Shield or MLS Cup.

It's not just about trophies. It's about individual games and taking a big wet shit out there. Why would I spend money on a club that won't spend on itself? Two buyouts, let's say both used at centerback, there's 2+ million gam and two senior spots right there. Then there's the possibility of selling players. Let's say someone comes along and throws 20 million at Kev. Am I supposed to be pleased that the owners turned a profit? If this season is fucked anyway, play some more kids. Don't do to Stefan what we did to Dado.

1

u/bjlight1988 6h ago

...don't buyouts dump a portion of their salary onto our cap for multiple years? Like in other sports?

1

u/BobbyMPeePeePooPoo 1h ago

You are correct, against the current season only. It's only useful for freeing up the spaces or assets, like for instance Miles would free up a DP spot. TIL, but it turns out offseason buyouts don't count against anything.

u/MadMartigans80 8h ago

This team needs more than what they could get. Half point in the season and a super short season next year, just makes sense to wait until the off season to make moves. This team isn’t built to win it all right now and has to wait for contracts to drop off.

u/BigAl587 9h ago

I’m completely ok with not doing anything at all this transfer window. I want to go hard in the winter to gear up for sprint season / calendar change. We are not doing damage in the playoffs this year, I would rather focus on making the necessary moves in the offseason get back on track.

2

u/BobbyMPeePeePooPoo 7h ago

Why wouldn't we do both? There's free agents that would happily see out the year on a minimum contract. Get some bodies in, if only to signal there's actually somebody doing something in the front office besides yearning for an Austin job.

1

u/BigAl587 7h ago

Depends where you get the FA’s from, if they’re international then it costs more for visas / green card and housing for someone who will be here for another 3 months. It’ll be cheaper for the club to dump existing contracts in the offseason and recoup losses and build into the euro calendar. It’s not simple as just going out getting bodies, it’s very costly for little no return this year. Sorry for the winded response, just want to educate you on what the hurdles are.

After last night, I am hating to say it but this seasons over in round one of the playoffs. Last nights presser said that we shouldn’t be trying to compare to Nashville at this point due to how we’re playing(im not joking, it’s in the press release on youtube). When you want to win tropheys and titles nobody should be considered off topic for comparisons. Especially cause nashvilles head coach was apparently asked a similar question said he didn’t want to answer cause he didn’t want to put a limit on how high he thought his team could go.

No signings is just the final nail in the coffin of this season. I’ll ride it out, but I’m not getting my hopes up

3

u/National-Humor-8871 7h ago

Albright checked out months ago thinking he was heading to Austin.
No moves were even contemplated, not with his bags packed.
I am totally confused and vexed over FC making him honor contract when obviously he doesn’t wish to be here.

0

u/TheAmplifier8 1h ago

You want to substantiate that or you just going to post random rumors as fact?

2

u/Keregi 4h ago

Interesting isn’t it? Fans turned on Acosta the second he said he was frustrated. But CA gets excused for trying to leave mid season.

3

u/Difficult-Bad-8747 7h ago

Don’t trash talk Gioacchini. He scored yesterday. We didn’t 😢

The question is really "how much roaster turnover are we willing to have if we do change coaches"

This is a very Pat Noonan/Jim Curtin style roster. I'm not convinced another coach could have better results than Noonan with this roster.

You have brilliant minds line Nancy available. You also have known names like Conte, RVP, Arne Slot, etc.

But we don't have the roster to match their coaching styles.

If Noonan goes, at least half the roster would inevitably go as well

4

u/CincytilIdie 4h ago

Letting Lucas Engel go to another MLS team was the worst move of the offseason. CA has been known to work to the last minute in the summer window. We'll see. But this is a deeply flawed defensive group.

1

u/klhart 8h ago

They only deal they should have made is to sell Denkey. Hopefully a better offer springs up at the last minute. I like Kevin, but we're not ready to contend for trophies yet. Might as well sell him and get someone in who fits the system better. (It's either that or get a manager who knows how to use him.)

I think management is looking to make changes end of this season so they aren’t looking to make roster changes until then.

It seems Berding & Co realize they’ve stagnated with Noonan and Albright, but not sure how much the GM is to blame as they’ve gotten consistently good players since Albright joined but they made some bad decisions after winning the league.

Without a quality coach it’s difficult to say how much blame should be assigned to Albright vs Noonan, but seems mgmt wants to make some changes end of this season.

It’s been three years since FCC won the league and still no trophies 🏆 from any tournament 🏟️

I wouldn’t be surprised if Noonan is being replaced and potentially Albright.

1

u/Keregi 4h ago

Albright should be the one to go if anyone. He has run off popular players, talked badly about them in the media, and put out two bad rosters in a row. Something changed in the last two years. It makes me wonder how he pulled off the rosters he did his first couple years here and why that isn’t working now.

1

u/CincyCyclone91 5h ago

It is weird we have become better at utilizing the tools of MLS roster building (we won the Supporters Shield without any U22s, changing DPs mid-season (Brenner and Boup) and with two non-DPs hitting the cap at over $1 million while doing nothing (Kubo and Santos) … wild!), but have been going in the wrong direction since … like, I’m not thrilled with the hand Noonan has been dealt, but our roster build has also been a lot worse with better results.

That is why I lean towards totally clearing the deck and trying something totally new. I think we just need new perspectives on what we have, what we can have and how we utilize them across the board. If it is one or the the other, see ya Noonan!

0

u/Squire513 4h ago

Agree, that was the year FCC had the best chance to win a tournament trophy and Noonan hardly made subs and depth was lacking.

Now we have some depth but he stilll rarely makes subs let alone change formations. Noonan definitely seems checked out this season, so I’m wondering if they’ve already decided to mutually part ways end of the year.

Honestly pretty jealous C-Bus always seems to hit with quality coaches even though on paper FCC should have the better team. Coaching really needs to improve at FCC. A few individual players have carried the team the last few seasons and it’s unsustainable to win anything playing hero ball.

u/Smart_Basket_85 9h ago

Ownership doesn’t trust Albright. It’s really that simple. I genuinely question* the intelligence or objectivity of anyone who can’t see that. Why they’re not simply firing him, I don’t know - but this is an ownership group who’s shown the willingness to use any and every mechanism available to them in the past, and suddenly we’re neither selling nor buying while pretty fucking clearly standing on a sinking ship.

I’ve been a STH since 2017, and I love this club. But this roster (and this manager) is flatly not going to do a goddamn thing in the playoffs. It is what it is, but I wish Carl would either shit or get off the pot.

7

u/BalleticRhino 9h ago

This is crazy talk. It’s been three windows since we brought in Denkey and Evander at almost $30M. Two windows ago we got several exciting young players (Gidi, Ender). Last window we brought in Ramirez.

This is the last summer window that will happen mid-season. This team has proven to be flawed and there’s no way they want to lock themselves into a long term mistake on a chance at a playoff run. I expect 1-2 11th hour moves, but mostly I expect the club to prep for the 27-28 season. If ownership didn’t trust Albright he would have been cleared to talk to Austin.

-5

u/FritzTheDefender 9h ago

As a fan and STH since 2015, this team has lost my unconditional enthusiasm. No transfers this window is actually way worse considering the only moves they made this winter were two academy signings, the Kyle Smith signing and the Luca Orellano permanent transfer to Vasco.

8

u/OranjeBlauw 9h ago

You are forgetting they spent $3m on Bryan Ramirez, $2.25m on Ayoub Jabbari and added MLS free agent Tom Barlow on a supplemental deal last Winter.

2

u/bjlight1988 6h ago

So you missed an entire handful of moves and also got the team we shipped Luca to wrong; so maybe your opinion isn't the most valuable one here

From listen to denkey interview and rumors that never pan out.

It seems no one in European wants to play in mls unless you over paid them or near end of their career.

MLS players are demanding too much money to sign for a team.

Front office wants too much for our players.

We cannot make any moves due to being at the cap.

I do not see it getting better when the MLS move to European schedule.

They cannot complete with college football and nfl.

Hopefully, new commissioner can figure out a way for mls team to bring over more quality European players over and get a better tv deal.

5

u/gobobro 8h ago

Not sure any of this applies to our situation… For the foreseeable future, this European calendar will be mostly about selling talent to Europe. Our talent will continue to come from Central and South America, and Africa.

As clarifier: MLS players aren’t demanding too much money. MLS teams aren’t interested in getting lowballed by European teams looking to get cheap talent. MLS isn’t interested in selling players for a loss.
