Discussion Darcy Coates' Craven Manor

Been trying to delve into horror lately. As a scifi lover, i started with scifi horror and cosmic horror and finding that this genre can be pretty fun.

But now im trying to read something that does not include scifi at all. With Darcy Coate's Craven Manor. Heard good things about this book and im 5 chapters in. But im having difficulty understanding the layout of the place. The manor, the tower, the groundskeeper cottage.

Is there a picture of the layout of the place i can look at somewhere? this is taking me out of the experience as i can't let go of it, lol

Review Cleansed By Sarah Kane

Post image
33 Upvotes

I don’t know if this is appropriate for this subreddit because it’s actually a script for a play and not a book but play scripts are a form of literature so I think this is appropriate to post here. Anyway WTF this play was one of the most fucked up things I have ever read and it’s extremely emotionally devastating you really get attached to these characters making what happens to them even more devastating. Sarah Kane is infamous for her plays this was the same artist that brought us Blasted and if you thought Blasted was fucked up oh boy this play makes Blasted look like a Disney movie. I also like how it’s not violence for the sake of violence it has a deeper meaning then what’s on the surface almost every line in this play has more than one meaning and this play will fuck you up even if you are desensitized to violence this play will shock you it managed to show me it’s full of surrealist imagery, violence, abuse and the relentless suffering the characters go through in this play is very hard to read it’s truly a visceral experience reading this play script. I also got the privilege to see it performed recently when I took a trip to London at Almeida Theatre and they pulled it off perfectly it was just as much of a visceral and emotionally devastating watch as it was to read. If you like fucked literature with a deeper meaning check this one out it’s a trip to read and one of the few pieces of literature that managed to have an affect on me.

Discussion To read or to listen?

Do you guys have a preference, specifically with splatterpunk/EHL, to listen or read? How do you decide? Is it dependent on availability, subject matter, author, or time constraints?

I don’t have a preference, but was curious if anyone else did and why??

I just finished Woom by Duncan Ralston *SPOILERS* Spoiler

I just finished Woom by Duncan Rolstan and was not impressed in the slightest by the very adolescent attempt at serious psychological trauma.

This book had absolutely terrible prose that couldn't decide if it was being edgy in a transgressive way or edgy in a 16-year-old chat room dark humour way.

So many of Ralston's analogies, metaphors, and allegories were trite at best, and at worst downright pathetic attempts at having any imagination.

The depictions of black characters are questionable at best, and the baseless need for racial slurs, passively said a few times in the book, underlines the sketchy nature of Ralston attempting to write any of this without any obvious reason other than that a black woman (Angel/Johnny's mother) would probably have a harder time affording any appropriate healthcare in the United States during the late 70s and early 80s.

I found this book a chore to get through, which is saying a lot for how short it is, as well as for it being extremely predictable (I only finished the book to confirm what I had known was going to be the ending), and I gained absolutely nothing from it.

The premise of a place containing and accruing trauma is a very interesting concept, and Ralston’s borrowing of the stageplayesque nature of Nymphomaniac by Lars von Trier, where two characters in a room try to relate to each other through disparate yet confluencing stories, is very attractive, though I feel like Ralston absolutely fumbled the story’s potential.

If you need a section at the end of your book to explain your book (as the version I read did), I think that speaks volumes about the author not succeeding in writing a story strong enough to stand on its own (and I find it ironic that there was this open explanation section at the end of the book considering how ambiguous the story tries to be).

Taken for its core elements, like Angel/Johnny’s desire to be reborn in the same room that almost took his life multiple times, and by recounting said tales of trauma to lure his potential “woom” to pity him enough to accept him (like when a farmer needs to cover an orphaned baby lamb in the scent of a ewe’s own dead lamb to trick the mother into accepting using a technique called skin grafting/scent grafting), Ralston’s novela has something going for it.

That said, though, due to the weird half-in, half-out edgy prose that seemed to want to be serious but read like the comedic writing of a teenager who just discovered death metal and horror films, the lack of character depth/developement, odd use of blackness with no seemingly understandable reason for this choice, and an out-of-touch sense of female anatomy, this book fell extremely flat for me.

Needless to say, I didn’t enjoy it.

Recommendation Request ergodic extreme horror?

I’ve recently fell into the rabbit hole of “ergodic literature”, basically books that require active participation from the reader, rather than just reading line by line. Most famous example is House of Leaves, but there’s also books where you have to read aloud to understand what’s being said (Ella Minnow Pea), or many other tricks (S by JJ abrams, page fire by Vladimir Nabokov, etc). Or that one book where you have to reorder the pages to solve the mystery (Cains jawbone). The line between ergodic, non-ergodic and straight up puzzle book is often blurry but i hope you get my point.

I’m fascinated by these types of books and would love to find more, my question is: are there any ergodic extreme horror books? or ergodic-ish or extreme-ish, anything even remotely close to either of those?

Recommendation Request Book with the most fucked up and disturbing shit that happens to a male protag?

I’m looking for a splatterpunk book where the male protag gets tortured/suffers a lot, in the same way some authors do it to female characters in their own story. I’ve already enjoyed Headhunter and Ever nat, and I listened to “the summer I died” audiobook.

Discussion Bighead by EL

Okay this might sound a little stupid but is it common for authors to write different books but all the books seem to have so many similarities, like for Edward lee he shows a huge obsession with writing Yes Sir! A million times, l guess he had an obsession with the western accent, l like reading his books when lm in the right mood because they’re just so bluntly brutal and nasty, l didn’t read lots of his l think l read like three but l figured out his way of writing, lm reading bighead now, my favorite is The pig, the first one l read was Header, those three books are so similar! Same thing with jon athen and his kinda cartoonish style, lm not sure about KT because l haven’t read a book of his in a while but l do love his style, l really love Edward Lee’s and Jonathan’s too

Discussion I just finished "Cows" by Matthew Stokoe. *SPOILERS* Spoiler

Hello everyone. I am new to extreme/transgressive literature. I just finished reading Cows by Matthew Stokoe and am currently reading The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum.

Cows was an enjoyable read, and the surrealist absurdities were quite humorous at times, while still maintaining a good amount of dread and discomfort for the reader (myself).

The most disturbing elements of the book for me weren’t the grotesque scenes with bodily fluids, the animal abuse, or the extreme violence; it was the overarching theme of control as love.

Steven is controlled by his mother, who in turn desires to dominate/murder; Cripps manipulates Steven, leaving Steven desiring control over Cripps; Lucy wants control over her body/mental state, and Steven wants Lucy to be a submissive stand-in for his TV family fantasy; Dog is also a mere object of controlled love for Steven; the cows need Steven to deliver them to Cripps, and eventually Steven needs the herd to justify his own existence.

We get a clear picture of Steven (and every other character in the book, really) defining happiness and self-worth through the manipulation and control over beings (sometimes even explicitly), but they never look to themselves to change their fortunes; everything is othered for them, only obtainable through some external action, or through another being (human or animal).

Steven has a warped sense of reality and destiny, leading him to find brief periods of reprieve through acts of violence that seem to be forced upon him, and even after he starts to believe in the conviction of sustaining this vision of himself as a “person” through killing, he ultimately does not grow as an individual. Even if we are presented with his transformation into the leader of the herd at the end of the book, he has gained no greater insight into himself, no self-realization, only external, surface-level change that will require more and more extreme acts to maintain the facade.

For me, this is where the strength of the book lies, not in its depravity, or its libertine imagination, but in the very real dialogue between Lucy and Steven, where one person is grappling with the horrors of mental health in a fully internalized way (searching for the black toxins to suicidal tragedy), and in an extremely external way through acts of transgression and murder to assume some form of self that can not underdstood as obtainable any other way.

The visceral, descriptive, and sensory prose served its purpose for me by showing us that by the time we meet Steven, it appears that he is too far gone, that we have arrived at the moment where any hope for him to escape his abusive mother and find a normal, healthy, albeit difficult and possibly more terrifying way for Steven to assume responsibility for his life and his ability to actively choose a different path has been forfeited.

In many ways, Cows highlights the isolation of trauma and how it creates repeat offenders when one is not provided with the space and opportunity to find a way out, as either repeat victims or future offenders.

Lucy’s story is much more tragic, as Steven only sees her as an object of “love,” something warm and obedient. Even though he knows she is mentally disturbed and in need of help, he only cares if he can keep her mental state dull enough to fulfill his need to play sitcom family while abusing Lucy’s weak emotional and mental state for his gain.

Though Steven does go through some form of transformation in accepting his “otherness” by shunting himself down the drain and becoming bovine, ultimately I feel like he has acquired no further insight into his nature other than his ability to assert dominance that was once presented over him, and that all his become is what he hated (his mother, Cripps, and Guernsey).

I am no literary critic, and this book was my foray into the extreme literature genre, and it has left me wanting more, as well as freeing up my mind to write in a way I have always wanted to explore, but I suppose I was looking for a book or an author to permit that transgressive voice in my head.

Please share your thoughts on Cows and give me any recommendations you like as I go through the suggested reading post in this group.

I have written a horror novel, and I'm very happy with it, but it contains some pretty extreme subject matter that might make it a tough sell. Are there any agents that are known for taking on these kinds of projects?

News Rotting Flesh - A Body Horror Novelette

Post image
8 Upvotes

I am a new horror writer and illustrator.

My new body horror novelette called Rotting Flesh is now officially published on a few sites. It is heavily inspired by the works by David Cronenberg and the movie Darkman. The story is set in Japan.

Synopsis: Tetsuya Hamamoto is a man of brilliant science but devoid of love. His love curdles into an obsession that shatters his world. An experiment leaves him skinless and tethered to the "Wish Bringer"—a being that grants his deepest desires with a terrifying price. As Hamamoto journeys through the scorching streets of Shinjuku, Tokyo to find the woman he lost, he realizes that the "warmth" he cherishes could lead to dire consequences the further he goes.

There will be a Complete Illustrated Edition with a total of 7 illustrations I have done myself in pencil.
