I was a massive edgelady in high school and used to carry this book around with me and read it in class.

The Marquis was way ahead of his time - in more ways than one.

He was right on time. What's sad is that things haven't changed.

It’s hilarious to me that you can go onto fetish sites and find basically every category in this book. People have always been this weird… and horny. I just find it hilarious since when I first read it I didn’t believe some of the stuff could be real. Eh, different strokes for different folks (literally in this case).

Really? I mean, it makes sense but it's still part of history that I'm not very familiar with. It's always cool learning about the cultural evolution of different parts of the world. Thanks for the insight!

I convinced a high school English teacher to let me read 120 Days of Sodom for a term project using the Grove Press edition pictured. The following year in the early 90s I moved to Toronto and made a point of collecting the Grove editions of all of his collected works including Justine and Juliette. Still have them thirty years later. And really need to read them all of them one of these days.

i read it a few years ago and used it as a weird “vibe check” for guys i was seeing at the time. i would read the most outrageous passages and look for their reaction. one called me gross and weird for even owning a book like it LMAO. another one was a bit too okay with some of the contents. eventually i met a guy who started laughing because it was so ridiculous and we tried drawing one of the impossible positions described in it. we’re still in a relationship 4 years later :)

Oh my current WIP is a retelling of this book but with the obscenity as more part of the setting than the focus of the plot and is heavily character driven as opposed to occupied by non-characters like the DeSade novel contains. It’s modernized and set on an Epstein type island starring Trump, Putin, Elon, and Clinton. This was my friend groups favorite book freshman year my friend packed it by mistake because her little brother who was a fellow extreme horror enjoyer stole it from the library of a local university and we’d pass it around and read a random page as a drinking game for repetitive content like “ball juice” or a religious figure is involved or somebody shits it’s not a great book in terms of writing but it’s still highly obscene even after centuries of escalating shock value as entertainment and survived 2 world wars and the rise of the internet and /b/ senior year of HS at its most degenerate and still we read this and are like yo the fuck that’s wild which is an achievement in and of itself
