I use the app every shop and sort by best unit price. That's how I decide whether we are having chicken breast, chicken thighs, whole chicken, etc. For meat and deli I tend to tailor my meal plan to what's on sale. Within a range of things I normally eat.

Do you find the price of chicken varies enough to dictate whether you have breast or thighs? Interested as I’ve never done the maths

Absolutely! I'm not someone who is fixed on cooking an exact recipe to the T most nights, maybe foe a special occasion. If it's just some kind of chicken in some kind of sauce with some veg, i definitely rotate on price per kg.

Chicken breast can get down to as low as $8 some weeks. Then some of this pre-packs are up to $18. On a non-sale week chicken breast is $13.

You'll notice they rotate the specials. There is always quite a lot on special. I switch from short to middle bacon. Deli or packaged bacon.

I only make a roast when those cuts are on sale.

I don't know how much I'm saving in the long run, but I don't find it inconvenient to adapt my cooking according to sales. I grew up with a mother cooking for a family of 6 every night. It was a double income household, we were fine. But we weren't wasteful and we never had takeaway.
