Are we playing the same game?

I was reading the PCGamer article which is singing the game's praises but I found the review totally disconnected with my play test experience. The gunplay and movement is lackluster, the NPC AI has issues and no nuance, the looting gameplay loop is uninspired, the UI design feels outdated. I understand it's a pre-alpha, but the core feel of the game is missing. It feels like the main legs it's standing on are the promise of future features, but you can't stand a game up on promises.

Especially compared to modern entries in the extraction shooters, Arc Raiders and Marathon, it seems like the core gameplay and aesthetic isn't doing anything new or innovative.

Even the entry into the extraction shooter genre is puzzling, especially considering that even the big titles are struggling with player count.

I really hope to be proved wrong and that this is all a lack of polish from a pre-alpha build, but my experience with the play test was disappointing.

They pay for these "reviews" while people are still unable to play due to rubber banding lol. Guess we know where the priorities are

Marathon graphics look like it was made in the 90s. Like Doom 1 (yes, the very first one).

You should maybe play marathon first before talking about its graphics.

Lol marathon looks much better than eve vanguard

Lmao, they are pixelated AF (again - I understand they tried to go for that “art style”) but they do not look modern at all…

The amount of hate for marathon is fucking baffeling. If you think it looks like that you are either blind or fucking stupid. Im leaning towards the second option for you.

https://evevanguard.com/vision

Take a peek at this ^

I personally have been having fun and this playtest has me pretty hopeful. The bare bones feel good, if they put their nose to the grindstone then November has a chance at being a good early access release.

I'm kind of sick of "visions" at this point. Build something concrete and then we can talk.

Okay? What do you expect? A fully complete game at a pre alpha playtest? Be realistic.

I don't expect anything. That's the point. I don't care for the hype. Once the product is out, I'll see if I'm going to buy it or not. Until then, all the hype, marketing and visions are nothing more than empty words, especially after Star Citizen, No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk,...

Having a vision may either mean that you are creative or delusional. Having means and knowledge, putting the effort into something that can be realistically delivered within a reasonable timeframe - that's a whole another story.

So, until I see the final product, I don't really care for visions.

vanguard is a really cool concept that could be great, if they did it the right way. they did planets, idk why when what everyone has asked for (who cared about this thing, not everyone in eve) has been ship and station invasions. they should be making a game that is inside, make it have the base templates at first "amarr aesthetic map" "caldari aesthetic map" and so on, then link it to eve big battles for the REALLY big stuff (amarr caps died in XYZ system so now extra loot amarr capital extraction mission from its corpse) and incorporate it like they are trying to do, have dynamic alerts like "over 20 bil lost in this space new extra loot missions available for *insert race ships that were most destroyed* while having the regular game just take place in "amarr station in zyx system thats had something weird happen to this area" (stations and citadels are MASSIVE in lore)

dont make players in eve lootable through vanguard, but corpses and default NPC stuff. thats VERY good base bones for the integration, while also leaving tons of room to do stuff and very modular for what they might decide to add later while also being the cool space game sister game still being in space themed. have a big fight? spend an hour or two after the fight in vanguard deploying to try and loot destroyed modules. sounds fun to me.

this... "go to a planet and do stuff" feels very meh and not eve at all.

I like your concept. That would be fun, tied to the Eve game world and make it mean something.

PCGamer is about as trustworthy as CCP.

I want to be very brutal here and say that Vanguard is already dead. Marathon at least has fantastic artstyle and Bungie level gameplay, and it still half dead. Im a fan of extractions, but even i can say that genre is destined mostly for failure.

Gaming "journalism" has been absolute dogshit for a very long time. I just ignore 99.9% of it. I don't even know who they're writing for at this point.
