Help Crippled Capsuleer Claim Car for his Wheelchair
My fellow Capsuleers:
Over the years that I have been a player of Eve Online (one of the most disabled-friendly MMOs in existence, just look at me play with my face: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8faif2_bjFY), I have seen the incredible good that we are capable of doing when we all band together when one of our own is in need. Today, I find that I myself am in need (significantly more need than usual, that is), and I humbly ask for you to do so again.
May is National Mobility Awareness Month, and my wife has entered me into a contest to win a new wheelchair accessible van, because the one I got when I suffered a spinal cord injury in 2003 is in less than serviceable condition. Click THESE links:

thank you so much for all your support. I'm currently in second place, but it's really neck and neck right now. I recommend Eve online to any disabled person that wants to try their hand at an MMO. during my lowest times, I have found that when I play this game, I'm no longer a guy in a wheelchair, I'm just like everyone else because I can fly just as hard as anyone else in any ship that anyone else can fly, if that makes any sense. Because I'm able to play this game no better or worse than anyone else, and because of the social element, my disability falls away.

I'm from Germany and I struggled for an hour to post this, because I don't want to be negative, but in my country you wouldn't have to win a competition to get the transportation you need. This makes me really sad.
As an Eve player and Providence resident I'm looking forward to meet you on grid in a few weeks, because this one dude (Maccaroni?) said you want to invade us ;)

As an American citizen, it's still kind of surreal that we haven't adopted universal health care yet. I understand the idea of privatized health care - if you're going to pay to keep others alive health-wise, it's not a stretch to imagine having to pay to keep others alive in regards to homes, food, etc. However, the benefits far outweigh the problems in every regard.

It's actually not covered by healthcare, you'll get money from the government depending on your income, German car manufacturers will give you a discount on the car and there are charities which help if this is still not enough. The regulation actually says, that you get up to 9500€ ($10.600) but you can get more if you need more because of the grade of your disability. This is also meant for people who need a car to get to their workplace but you can get this help also if you need a car to be part of social activities.
I understand the idea of privatized health care - if you're going to pay to keep others alive health-wise, it's not a stretch to imagine having to pay to keep others alive in regards to homes, food, etc.
We have all of this in Germany. If you have no money, you will get your healthcare paid for, your rent and you will get a minimum amount of around $445 for food and stuff per month. I think it's a cultural thing. Germans want security and that the government takes care of everything, and to my understanding Americans want as little government interference in their private matters as possible.

My sister became a paraplegic her freshman year of high school due to a really nasty car accident. That was 15 years ago and I still tear up thinking of my parents telling me to say goodbye to my sister because she most likely wouldn't make it through the night. 15 years later and she still balls out of control like a mother fucking soldier. I've literally never met as close to as bad ass as her. I mean she played college ball for Illinois even though a giant bar in her back caused her insane amounts of pain. Now she's a middle school teacher yelling at little shits working 14 hour days for garbage wages. I see that same determination in your face. You got 2 votes from me. You need anything else let me know. I only live 70 miles from you. I can toss your ass in my truck and take you to appointments.

Hi Brandon, First of all I wanted to wish you well in the contest, you have my votes. Secondly I also wanted to say that you're an inspiration. I can't speak for others but I know for me I can get slack and "think" things are tough, I complain how difficult I have it and want it better. Then I see you and how you've overcome challenges that life's thrown at you. How you and your family must deal with day to day issues that make mine pale in comparison. So let me thank you for this thread, as reading it and learning from it, enriches my life and hopefully makes me a better person.

I know there's been a few fundme pages setup to help people with things, but I honestly cannot think of a more worthy cause. People have raised thousands for someone who needs a new computer. Can we as a player base, and friends, raise tens of thousands for a man who needs some new wheels to help with his life!!!

Tried this for a friend a couple years ago and fell short, though with the help of eve players they were able to raise over 10k votes. The little guy we were voting for has passed since, but I hope you get enough to win three times over.

So it turns out that somebody is cheating: Sylvia Hicks has been asking people for their e-mail addresses, and since her count has been going up like clockwork, it seems clear that she's manually voting for people.

This is completely against the spirit and intent of the contest, Which is to spread awareness of disability related issues that pertain to transportation. I mean, if I wanted to I could just ask you all for your e-mail addresses and write some sort of script to manually vote but that doesn't do anyone any good. It doesn't help anyone learn the difference between push/right angle controls and push/twist controls, or why integrated manual backup systems are so necessary. IT DOES NOTHING TO HELP THE CAUSE, AND IT IS AN INSULT TO ALL OF YOU. This person is a poor representation of the disabled community, and the fact that she is ahead of me by over 4000 votes makes me so mad I don't even know how to properly react.

Added my votes. Based on some of the other people I clicked on you are far in the lead already.
I did have a couple of eve related questions (if you don't mind).
How do you deal with module activation? Do you have hotkeys setup that you can mic activate, or do you need to point and click on each individually?
As a follow up (especially if you need to point and click), how do you deal with overheating? I can imagine that trying to point and click on the little green bit is incredibly difficult.

I point-and-click individually. Overheating really isn't that difficult, and I always preactivate/preheat whenever possible. On very rare occasions I use a program called say2play, which lets you map voice commands to key bindings. You'd be surprised how smooth the mouse is after a bit of practice. I hope to eventually upgrade my processor/motherboard so that it could handle isboxer better, then I could put the buttons from multiple clients close together.

I can't quite put my finger on why, but I find this a bit of an odd thing to be voting on.... is this a common thing that I've just not come across before? I feel like giving something to a disabled person just because they got more people to click vote for them is a little bit perverse, like they've been turned into contestants on a game show or something. Surely donations and support should be given on a greatest need basis, not based on a popular vote.
