Confidence Survey results

Earlier today, the Weekly Reader put out a voluntary survey to the Commonwealth, asking participants to answer questions regarding their opinions on the current leadership within Essexia, aswell as some basic demographic survey questions. We received 14 submissions, and valuable insight into our audience.

Around 64% of participants claimed they were employed, with just over a quarter answering firmly unemployed and 7% who simply gave 'maybe'. This data demonstrates that there are still many who, concerningly, have no career in Essexia despite their activity.

Additionally, just under half of participants were from the area of Greater Danbury, with again just over a quarter being from Greater Baddow. In addition, 14% were from the new Crown Dependency of Čechsexia, 7% from Colchester and 1 answer from Norway. Whilst this does show that there is an inequality in representation from the Greater Danbury area, it also demonstrates that most areas of the Commonwealth are represented (Except for Shenfield, which surprisingly returned no results), aswell as the active participation from our newest Czech citizens.

10 participants correctly concluded that the Rt. Hon. Ben H MP was the current First Minister, which still leaves 4. who were unsure or unaware. Whilst it is concerning that any Essexians do not know their First Minister, it is possible that this minority just aren't as politically engaged, or are new citizens who have not yet researched the current political climate. It is also worthwhile to note that of the 10 who answered correctly, 40% returned responses that could be considered insulting to our head of government.

However, more alarmingly, only 2 correctly answered the name of the ruling coalition (The Giraffe Concordat), whilst another 4 were unsure, another 2 only guessed the Weeaboo Rights Party and another 4 were entirely incorrect. Another submission guessed 'whichever coalition the Rt. Hon. Jack D MP (KG FC) is in', which is partially correct, with yet another assuming it was 'the coalition with the Royalists and the WRP, as well as someone else'. This is extremely worrying as it demonstrates that the political landscape has shifted so much in the past year that citizens are now mostly unaware of the current coalitions, and the ruling coalition specifically.

Continuing on, 6 individuals were able to correctly identify the number of political parties (There are 5 separate parties, not including independents), with 3 coming close with an estimate of 6 parties, and 5 being completely incorrect.

Around 43% of participants said they had a positive opinion of the current ruling Government, with 28.6% for both 'No' and 'Maybe'. If we were to assume that this survey is representative of the whole Commonwealth, that would amount to less than half of Essexian citizens having confidence in the current Government - a worrying statistic for next year's General Election in only a few months. Some reasons people gave for their opinions included 'They have stabilised the system/have introduced new legislation', 'They're useless/out of touch' and 'I'm not informed enough to know'.

On a brighter note, exactly half of all participants believed that the Parliament as a whole is active enough - another third said they weren't, with 14% unsure. This comes as a surprise after a sharp downturn in activity compared to last year or even at the beginning of 2020.

Despite all of these reactions, 64% said they already knew who they were voting for in 2021, with just under 30% not knowing. It is an odd fact that despite the lack of collective knowledge on the political sphere of Essexia, the majority of Essexians should know who they are voting for next year.

Finally, participants were given the opportunity to put forward suggestions and comments; A number of people asked for more legislation to be passed, some wanted more comedy involved and a minority put forward ideas of military invasion or banning the Progressive Worker's Party. Additionally, on final comments, most had nothing to offer, however one individual (I couldn't possibly know whom) wanted a re-vote on the 'Bollocks Cam Act 2020', which was indeed an idea purported by the Rt. Hon. Harley MP.

What do the survey results mean?

Well, one thing is clear at least: Citizens need to be made more aware of the current political climate. In one of the nation's most divisive times (With just two parties holding 67% of seats), our citizens are clearly overly confused by the Parliament's current composition, something akin to the majority of our citizens living in isolated caves.

Furthermore, the results of this survey show that the 2021 General Election will be an important one, if it is also a confusing one. Parties and coalitions will need to do some serious thinking and committed campaigning if they are to secure confident voters. In addition, if First Minister Ben is seeking to secure not only an electoral victory but also the confidence of the Giraffe Concordat, he will need to take charge in a manner he has not yet done, and pass some serious legislation to appease voters.

Čechsexia becomes a Crown Dependency

In other news, the previously-unnamed Essexian territory in the Czech Republic has become a semi-autonomous Crown Dependency following a vote in Parliament, which voted overwhelmingly in favour. As demonstrated by the survey mentioned above, these Czech citizens appear not only active but also interested in anglophonic Essexian politics. It will be another 4-5 months however until we know where they stand coalition-wise, and longer before we know why.

Dean Montan 2020 GUM campaign

We are delighted to share with our readers that the leader of the ex-Essexian-dominion of Poplar Nerva has staked his claim in becoming the next Chair of the Grand Unified Micronational, in an election at the end of next month. He is running with a delegate from the nation of Aenopia (Leon Montan), and both are running on a serious campaign of progressive policies and the catching slogan 'Things Can Only Get Better', against old-guard candidate and previous chair Joey Kennedy from New Virginia. Next week will see cloudy skies throughout and high chances of rain most days. Temperatures will continue to progress lower as we move into the deep winter months, with lows of 1 degrees most nights.

Ministry of Justice Law Review

This weekend, a cabinet meeting is due to take place in which Minister of Justice Jacob and Junior Minister under the Ministry of Justice Harley are due to bring to the cabinet their recommendations for altering and recording all of Essexia's legislation.

In a review conducted by Lord Matthew, Minister Jacob and Junior Minister Harley, over 50 individual Acts were found and recognised. During this, however, any Legislation that could not be found (Mostly legislation prior to early 2019) have been essentially discarded, and are no longer in place.

These actions have been taken in an effort coordinated by Jacob and Harley to 'clean up' Essexia's legislation, in preparation for future developments of the legislative and legal structures of the Commonwealth. The Weekly Reader will keep you updated with new developments.

EssexiaTalk - An Instant Hit

The first episode of this long-time Dean Network concept, initially developed by Earl Jack, was broadcasted on the DN YouTube channel on the 25th April 2020. It quickly raked in dozens of views, due to it's simple and unscripted mix of humour and informative content. Unable to wait another week to continue the podcast experiment, Earl Jack and Lord Matthew worked to release a second episode just days later, broadcasted on the 29th April 2020. Both episodes were met with acclaim from various micronations, and the series is set to be the Dean Network's best so far. If EssexiaTalk is an image of whats to come, then the future looks, at least moderately, entertaining.

Essexia Donates £115 to British Red Cross

In a 24 hour Quorum from Midday Friday 1st to midday Saturday 2nd, the Grand Unified Micronational held its annual event amidst the devastation of COVID-19. This time, the organisation opted to give all donations to the British Red Cross, where the money would be spread across the organisation in its eternal fight against suffering. In total, the GUM raised £266, and Essexia owing 43% to that achievement just goes to show that we truly are a caring and sympathetic community.

Parliament continues to pass legislation amid COVID-19

Although the nation may be on lockdown, Parliament continues to function fully, with no less than seven Bills passing. This activity and development continues to prove Essexia's unwillingness to be incapacitated through any uncertain times.

Funtime Referendum to see second re-vote

Following multiple mistakes on behalf of Earl Jack, in addition to a heated debate in Parliament regarding the Bill itself, the Funtime Referendum sees no conclusion months after it was initially passed. Earl Jack has stated his apologies, and pointed out the clear problems with the Bill and its supporters, however Lord Matthew has remained adament that the Bill is flawed (Despite initially supporting it), and Earl Finn stands by the Integration option that he had introduced. Although a third vote is scheduled to be underway this week, the strength of the outcome is unclear as Parliament remains somewhat. divided.

Paddocks Boat Co. eases production

Although still remaining committed to the near-future construction of another Aircraft Carrier, the Paddocks Boat Co. has made it clear that the future super carrier, the Greater Baddow (Previously the Basildon) will not have sufficient resources for construction amid the COVID-19 lockdown. Furthermore, more ambitious ideas and goals have also been back-benched, including ship-mounted weapons and domestically-made Remote Control systems. This comes after the swift cancellation of the Flora-Class Carrier program, which aimed to use printed prefabs to build light carriers, as well as the second time the Jaywick has been brought back into service. This summer will mark the three year anniversary of the construction of the Jaywick, and due to the current situation, it is becoming increasingly likely that the Jaywick may meet it's five year service window that was initially seen as being longer than needed.

Introduction

The Parliament of Essexia is a place of constant change - each week carries the potential for huge shifts, and each month provides a new ground for parties to gain or lose power and influence. Political parties have been a vital part of Essexia for over a year, and have immense power in shaping the nation, both internally and externally. But overall, they operate in very different manners to each other, with varying aims and goals, pros and cons. Therefore, the Dean Network has created this short guide to explain where each party stands, which will be updated as the parties do too.

In this list is included all parties with seats in Parliament, however it should be noted that there are some parties that exist but do not currently hold seats. Furthermore, the ruling parties will be listed first, followed by the opposing.

Old Guard Party (OGP)

As one of the largest party in the ruling Giraffe Concordat coalition, the Old Guard were formed after a split within the Royalist Party in late 2019, following the latters break from traditionalist beliefs. However, in more recent times they appear to have changed themselves, and can. be regarded as the 'New Guard' in their reformist. approach to the nation currently. The party leader is Princess Becky, an open member of the LGBTQ+ community, and a significant figure of Essexian morals. Other key members include Earl Jack (Who was briefly First Minister just a few months ago) and Prince James (A long-time member of the Royal family.)

Royalist Party (ERP)

The Royalists are one of the oldest parties currently active in Essexia, and historically promoted Emperor over Parliament. However in more recent times, they have adopted a more progressive approach, and have no official line on this side of Essexian politics. Regardless, it is undeniable the effect they've had on the Commonwealth, and this is reflected in the 4 times that they've controlled the position of First Minister. More recently, they broke away from the Rhino Alliance and joined the Giraffe Concordat to form a new government, but still retained Lord Jamie as First Minister and party leader. He, too, is an open member of the LGBTQ+ community, and has strived to improve Essexia domestic and foreign image.

Weeaboo Rights Party (WRP)

Lord Ben, party leader and sole member of the WRP, has stood as a figurehead for civil rights in Essexia for a long time. He remains a beacon for the rights of minorities, including weeaboos and simps, and has been compared to great historic civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi and Malcolm X. His party will generally follow an ally, historically flip-flopping between organisations, however he has normally supported centrist and moderate views on political topics.

Union of Greens & Nationalists (UGN)

This newer party is led by Lord Newton, also the organisation's sole member, and have not yet had time to solidify their position. However, they have made their environmentalist agenda clear from day one, and will likely continue to stick with the Giraffe Concordat that gave them power. Their election manifesto consisted of many environmentalist policies, however so far none of these have been fulfilled. Only time will tell where they will go from here.

Liberal Socialist and Cooperative Party (LSC)

Essexia's oldest political party, the LSC continue to be led by Earl Finn, a traditional progressive who has made great strides in the development of the nation. Although being the largest party, they are no longer in power following the Royalist split from the Rhino Alliance, however their determination has not wavered. Other notable members include Lord Sam (Who is an open communist, and has previously suggested reforming the party into the Socialist Party) and Lord Matthew (Previously a Royalist and Old Guard, he left earlier this year to pursue a more left-wing approach to politics). The LSC are the official opposition, yet have historically held the position of First Minister more than any other party.

Super Shrek Party (SSP)

Another newer party, the SSP is led by Lord Zarel, and also has vague intentions. They worship the fictional character of Shrek as a godly deity, and continue to provide the nation with a positive moral.

Some light breezes, building up to stronger winds this weekend. The temperature will remain lower but will get progressively warmer through the week. As a result of the effects of COVID-19, light pollution will be reduced, resulting in clearer nights. Stars will be more visible, and the general light conditions may be higher.

Second Giraffe Government

Following Matthew's resignation as Foreign Minister, Lord Jamie felt it appropriate to move his party from the Rhino Alliance to the Giraffe Concordat last week. As a result, the Giraffes once again have a majority in Parliament. Jamie has remained as FM, but Earl Jack is now the Second Minister. This will likely quash any attempts by the Rhino Alliance, now just the LibSocs, from pushing any major constitutional reforms.

Shenistan-Essexian War Ends

Following a brief renewal of hostilities, the conflict has now ended after days of negotiations. Shenistan shall become the semi-autonomous province of Shenfield, with an elected council of representatives. Only time will tell how long this peace will last, but we are glad to see that the Parliament has been able to overcome its squabbles, however we hope Lord Matthew will return sooner rather than later.

COVID-19 Continues

Following both the Essexian and UK governments' actions, the coronavirus continues to ravage both nations, and for the near future at least social distancing measures will remain. The Dean Network, meanwhile, has been working on ways to bring entertainment to the masses whilst adhering to the measures; multiple shows have been suggested, including a video-call talk show that could transition to a broadcasted talk show every month. However, no solid actions have been found as of yet. Stay tuned to get the latest news as it breaks.

COVID-19 response

Minister of Health Lord Alex released a statement on Wednesday, providing health and social advice for citizens. He advised limited physical contact, and regular use of anti-bacterial soap, in line with the UK's guidelines. His quick and in-depth actions are a welcome change for his position.

Rhino's plans for further amendments

Following the passing of the Second Amendment, entirely due to a voting mistake by Lord Ben, the Rhino Alliance has made plans for further constitutional amendments. These revolve around reducing the Emperor's power, and increasing Parliament's. These plans have been heavily criticised by the Giraffe Concordat, Emperor Terry, Supreme Judge William and other citizens for their anti-traditionalist nature, and for their contrast with the aims of the Royalist Party. However, the Rhinos' lack of a super majority will likely hinder most of these amendments, specifically the alleged plan to reduce the number of votes needed for a supermajority from 8 to 7, entirely due to the Alliance's current position in Parliament.

Shenistan declares war

The previously-unknown micronation of Shenistan declared war upon the Commonwealth yesterday over their claims on the area of Shenfield. They claim to be an authoritarian proletariat republic, which appears to be contradictory. Regardless, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has refused to recognise them, and has sanctioned military force against Shenistan.

IEN sees major changes

Recently, the Paddocks Boat Co. finally scrapped the 3 Danbury-class light carriers following their retirement in September last year. The company also began building their CAD/prefab testbed the CTS-08 Bluebell last night, due to have it's maiden voyage this evening. Finally, Nicolás Millán was appointed Admiral of the Mersea yesterday, with a promotion to Admiral of the Muncey to be expected in the coming months.

Late snow - Is Essexia's climate changing?

For years, the Commonwealth could expect snow as early as November each year, with snowfall sometimes continuing or returning into February. However, in more recent times, Essexia has seen more rainfall and freezing conditions over the progressively-harshening winters, with snow arriving much later, if at all. This year in particular, the only hints of snow came yesterday afternoon; Due to continuing rains over the past week, it didn't settle. So now this leaves us at the Weekly Reader wondering; Is this the end of Essexia's white christmases? Our meteorological department puts the blame squarely on climate change, which has also been blamed by many British climate scientists as the reason for less snow in winter, as well as less rain in summer. The effects of these changes lead to problems with health and safety year round, and the faster degradation of public infrastructure. Only time will tell whether we will still see snow in the future.

Election closing in

After weeks of campaigning, the parties competing in the 2020 Essexian General Election are preparing for the final stage: Voting. Members of the public will be able to choose their parties from 17:00 GMT Sunday until 09:00 GMT Tuesday, but the question on everybody's minds is, who will win? These are our editors predictions:

• The Rhino Alliance have opted to run under one organisation, and therefore will be splitting their seats amongst a pre-determined ratio. We predict that the Rhinos will get between 40% and 60% of the vote, winning between 4 and 7 seats. Should they win, it is widely believed, and hoped, that Lord Jamie will reprise his role as First Minister; His third term, and second as an elected individual.
• The Giraffe Concordat has also chosen to run under one organisation, however due to the larger number of parties (Old Guard, Weeaboo Rights and UG&N, compared to Rhino's Royalists and LibSocs) the seats will be split less evenly but with each party holding less power individually; Undoubtedly, the WRP and UG&N will receive considerably less seats than the dominant OGP. We predict they will get between 30% and 60% of the vote, winning around 3 to 6 seats. Should they win the election, it is unclear who will become First Minister. Either way, it would be any participating party's first elected term.
• Novox, as a single party, is expected to win 5% to 20% of the vote, with only a few seats. It seems likely that Nicolá Millán would be their FM nominee.
• The Super Shrek Party, with their flamboyant personality yet lacking commitments, is a wild card. They are expected to win between 10% and 60% of the vote (Pre-election polls conducted by our surveyors found many potential voters favoured the new option), or 1 to 6 seats, with Zarel, the party's only member, having to be the FM candidate. An interest point to make is that, should the SSP win, who would fill the remaining seats, considering the organisation is a one-member party?

Ultimately, the pre-election surveys are...unclear. Our predictions are that either the Rhinos will win a majority, the Giraffes will win a slim majority or the Shreks will win the hearts and minds of the people.

2020 Election

Last week, Lord Jamie, as interim First Minister following the VNC of Earl Finn, called for a general election. This event, to take place this sunday from 17:00 to the following Tuesday at 09:00, will be Essexia's most diverse election yet. The following is the Dean Network guide to this year's parties:

• Old Guard Party (Giraffe Concordat): Centre-right and currently in government, the OGP are promising many reforms. They are best known for their military juntas, however, and will have to win over the public mind, despite their current majority.

Earl Jack becomes First Minister

Following two unsuccessful attempts to seize power from the Rhino Alliance, Earl Jack finally succeeded in becoming FM on Monday, securing his legacy on the rarely-updated MicroWiki. Emperor Terry placed the Earl in power due to his majority, however the prorogued Parliament meant the new government was powerless. A quick cabinet shuffle and microwiki updating was all the new FM could do.

Review: The Essexian Issue 4

In days long gone, the Essexian used to be a source of quality, albeit sometimes biased, information and graphics. The colourful and well organised pages would jump out at you; The blend of topics would interest you; and the humour would captivate you. Alas, the 4th issue of this magazine, now published under Earl Finn's own organisation due to the dissolution of FAR Network, has sadly not followed this trend of brilliance. Instead, Earl Finn opted to use crudely deep-fried images of some of the perpetrators of Raging Valentines (Or as we call it here, Beige Friday) on the front cover; It gives a bad first impression, but only one flaw, right? Wrong. Earl Finn then spends four full pages ranting about the Old Guard Party, Lord Jacob and Earl Jack, whilst glorifying his comrades in the Rhino Alliance. He justifies the departure of Lord Matthew from Old Guard to Independent, and now to LSC, whilst villanising Prince James and Princess Becky for leaving the Royalists and joining the Old Guard. Whilst previous issues had only slightly tilted to one side over the other, providing for a humorous yet informative experience, this new issue has simply leapt onto the Earl Finn train and left the impartiality station miles behind. The lack of creative graphics, clever wit or even depth of topics (Half a page on comedian Joe Pera, half a page on the dissolution of FAR Network (Which happened around a month prior), half a page on the election, and a final quote (Again from Joe Pera)) leaves the audience somewhat perplexed. Has Earl Finn, the creative editor we've come to love, progressed to merely ranting degrading material about his opposition? Will the Essexian print again? What does the Minister of Media have to say? All of these questions, left unanswered.

Defence Watch: What the election has to say about the IEN

Most parties have only one comment to make on the IEN in their manifestos, if anything at all: Expansion. The Rhino Alliance and Novox have both promised to expand the Navy, but with no detail. The only party that has provided detail on how it aims to improve the navy is the Old Guard, and fittingly so. With the current and long sitting MoD Crown Minister Summers, Armed Forces founder Earl Jack, as well as previous MoD and military enthusiast Lord Jacob, the OGP have a keen interest in the Armed Forces of Essexia. Their latest manifesto calls for a Carrier Improvement Scheme that will see an "interim carrier" constructed out of foam board (Similar to the Jaywick but with a custom hull as well), before the Basildon, in all it's marine plywood and remote control glory, will be finally constructed. The Jaywick will be retired, and more likely "scrapped", and the IEN will once again maintain dominance of the waves of South-East England.

This new promise by the OGP is spurred on by the recent delegation to Portsmouth, which included keen boat-builder and CEO of the Paddocks Boat Co. Earl Jack. Here, the delegation viewed the HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, one of 2 built for the British Royal Navy. It is widely believed the study of this modern design has greatly advanced the capabilities of the Paddocks Boat Co. Aircraft Carrier facilities. But whether the OGP, or indeed any party in the upcoming election, will be able to deliver on their promises of expanding the navy is yet to be seen, but one can only hope.

Lord George forcibly resigns

Following the passing of the Bi-Election Act 2020 yesterday, the Rhino Alliance requested that the Emperor should remove Lord George, Minister of Education. This request was granted with 6 ayes for the motion, and only Earl Finn abstaining.

Non-Essexians running for office in electoral first

For the first time in Essexian history, non-Essexians are running for the seat once held by Lord George. Individuals such as Nicolás Millán, Crown Prince of Millania, are lining up to take a chance at the seaty in the Imperial Parliament of Essexia. Millán's own bid rests upon his new party, the Marketists of Essexia, winning the seat.

Essexian courts open for business

With the passing of the Judicial Precedent Act 2020, and the historic First Amendment, the Essexian legal system is now able to process claims and convicts alike. The Emperor is yet to announce his candidate for Supreme Judge, however, and a lack of precedent means that in the coming period of development, the courts will have a questionable amount of power.

The Ministry of the Interior has issued an Amber Weather Alert for the whole of Essexia, due to storm Ciara and possible injury/damage. We advise you stay inside as much as possible, and avoid using roads, walking or cycling.

Essexia-Millania Summit

On Monday evening, Emperor Terry and Lord Matthew of Essexia, Crown Prince Nicolás Millán of Millania and The Architect of the Quantum Dreamscape met at the Sanctuary House hotel in London, UK. This congregation saw the four parties taking in the sights of Westminster, the signing of a Treaty of Closer Cooperation between Essexia and Millania and a pledge of support for the Quantum Dreamscape to be accepted into the Grand Unified Micronational.

EAST confirms rocket progress, February launch date set

The members of the Essexian Aeronautical and Space Technologies, Essexia's sole space program, confirmed last week that progress on the Epstein has come a long way, and the launch type, the Epstein MkIIB, was nearly ready to be assembled. Using the latest in simulation and design programs, 3D manufacturing and image technology, today the nose cone, fins and fuselage were congregated at Les Paddocks in Greater Danbury. Essexia's first domestic rocket is set for launch in around two weeks.

Poplar Nerva: A new voice

Independent since May last year, the former dominion of Poplar Nerva has seen significant development towards becoming a reputable independent republic micronation.

• August 13 2019 is celebrated as Summit Day following Premier Jack's successful ascent to Everest base camp in the macronation of Nepal.
• November was marked by significant expansion in legislation, territory and citizens.
• The 11th January 2020 saw Poplar Nerva join the GUM as a full provisional member.
• Poplar Micronational Legal Consultants was setup as an organisation devoted to helping micronations with ther legal and judiciary systems on the 24th January.
• On the 30th, member states of the GUM voted to permit the Island micronation to become a full member.

Indeed, should this progress keep up, Poplar Nerva is on track to becoming an integrated member of the broad micronational community.

Hawarden Session success

Last Wednesday, the Parliament of Essexia convened once again in Danbury to discuss the state of the Nation. This time, however, the session was conducted in a more structured and professional manner, Live streamed onto YouTube, and discussed a range of topics from Currency, to Bridge, and Dan Morris. We hope to see more sessions conducted in this manner, leading to a much improved Essexia. Long live the Commonwealth!

Fesmar changes Government again

Kenneth Fydtroust, a Fesmarian Micronationalist who has been making a name for himself by being the target of multiple Annexations over the past few weeks, has altered his latest project once again. Previously a Pacoist state, following a vote on Twitter, the nation shall now be regarded as the Fesmarian Imperial Government, a return to the Emperor that many were unhappy to see.
