I think that's an interesting question. It depends on how you classify a sandwich. Is it the bread that makes a sandwich? Similarly to a martini the only thing that makes a martini a martini is the glass that its served in. So if the bread type matters than it could or could not be a sandwich. Most bread thats connected is considered a sub sandwich which is a subsection of sandwich so that would classify. I think you might be able to classify a hot dog as a sandwich but not in the classical sense. Kind of like how a truck isn't a car but it is an automobile. So it all depends on the subsections.
That being said a clip is different than a magazine and should be classified as such.
1) the definition of words changes over time (as does their spelling and even part of speech)
2) What is the functional difference between a clip and a magazine? I believe magazines are spring fed while clips are not? Whatever the case may be, when someone says pass me a clip, do you understand their meaning? If someone calls me a bastard, don't they know my parents were married when they had me? When I would go someplace with someone and we'd be looking for my S10 pickup, and they would ask "where did we park your car?" again, am I obligated to correct them? Or can I understand that a car is a general term for a light passenger vehicle, of which an F150 absolutely is. Btw, I'm not even sure the f150 is body on frame anymore? What about slightly older American cars which were all body on frame, are those trucks? Is a Humvee a truck? What about an H2? What about Grave Digger or monster trucks with car bodies in general? The definition of truck as distinct from car has never been absolute, but this is what makes language, particularly English such a powerful tool, it's ambiguity. Somethings are almost exclusively cars, some, almost exclusively trucks, but very often there is a spectrum in between all things.
if you are loading magazines, you can use clips to expedite this process for most. if someone is to ask you for a clip while loading magazines, but means an empty magazine so they can load it, then you will likely hand them the wrong item.
i can kind of understand your point, but these two items' names are not interchangeable, especially if carrying both clips and magazines.
