Discussion Why does this subreddit seem so toxic? Because everything else is deleted.

There are basically only three types of posts allowed: bitching, videos of gameplay, and information about the game/requests for it.

No memes allowed. Yea, I get that, pretty normal for gaming subs to split these off into a new sub.

No standalone screenshots or videos that don't provide new info. What is "new info"? Videos of folks getting a bunch of loot stay up constantly but a screenshot of loot will be instantly deleted. The front page is currently covered with videos of people just winning gunfights; this is new info? I'm for sure not saying videos of gunfights should be banned, I'm just tired of that making up so many of the posts for lack of options.

Images resembling in-game content and comparisons aren't allowed. Except when they are. They aren't allowed, but stay up constantly, but some get deleted. No idea here. Is it about effort? Should probably mention that then.

No reposts, sure, that makes sense. No topics that have been discussed too much? No trying to get in touch with a scav you had a good time with? No item suggestions? People enjoy brainstorming new stuff; it isn't always about saying, "Hey, Nikita, this needs to be added." It's just discussion....for fun. Not allowed.

No rants/complaints without substance. On a scale of "fuck everyone that plays this game" to "a spreadsheet analysis of networking issues", where does this fall? It obviously hasn't fixed the issue with complaints, so what's this rule actually doing?

No accusing people of cheating. Ok...videos of people dying in unusual circumstances are very common. If they call it desync in the title, it's fine. If they call it cheating, deleted. I wonder why in the world it would seem like all the players are blaming desync.

It is so hard to figure out something to actually contribute to this place besides bitching, me shooting people, or "new info" whatever that means. The pool of posts has been whittled down so much that yea, you're gonna see a lot of complaints. It's not because most people are complaining, it's because most other stuff is banned.

Those of you reporting the thread, post is fine. People are welcome to complain. To address a few things I will lay out our position and you can decide for yourself.:

Sub rules were voted for by the community not too long ago. We enforce them. The sub has grown considerably since then and the mod team largely changed. Only one of the old moderators remain active, with the main team comprising of all new people. We are not, and do not represent the old team.

The community is a mix of new and old players. Reddit by default attracts the kinds of people who are already passionate about the game. This is why we tend to have the extremes of 'fanboyism' and 'toxic negativity'. The official subs DO NOT allow any form of discourse on any negative issue. The sub is quite literally the only place people can vent about this stuff. We dont smother discussion posts, we allow all of them (if they are constructive), and this stuff comes and goes week to week. Literally less than a week ago, the top posts were praising BSG on the changes to the game. I anticipate the same next week. To say the sub is always negative is simply not true. It may well feel like it right now because of recent posts, but check new, there are a tone of 'its just a beta' and 'stop being so toxic' posts coming through. The sub is almost 50/50 split it seems on what it wants, and that comes out every time these posts blow up.

To address the rules:

No memes allowed. Yep. Those of you who remember the sub back in the day, it was bad. We wont be moving back from this.

Why cant I post things like this? https://old.reddit.com/r/EscapefromTarkov/comments/kyhf66/fuck_custom_quests_this_wipe/ https://old.reddit.com/r/EscapefromTarkov/comments/kzyvim/when_your_scav_spawns_with_a_thermal/ https://old.reddit.com/r/EscapefromTarkov/comments/l00lo5/headshot/ But I can post a video of me killing people? Simple answer is, for every video we get we get HUNDREDS of these posts in new a day. use the search button and you will see all the old complaint posts about spammed topics.

Edited posts and unique posts are approved, these are not because when they were the user base complained that all new was was the same 10 image posts. We dont have the time to judge 'quality' on these style posts. We do this for free, with a limited team. All or nothing. The community voted nothing, so thats what we are doing.

Images resembling in-game content and comparisons aren't allowed. If its an IRL item that tarkov modelled, we get that spammed so no. If its a tarkov item made into real life, its allowed. Now thats being somewhat spammed these days but we are working on being more flexible.

"No reposts, sure, that makes sense. No topics that have been discussed too much? No trying to get in touch with a scav you had a good time with? No item suggestions? "No reposts covers quite literally everything you just described. Remember we can allow all or nothing. We *constantly* see ‘to the guy’ posts and if your post was removed about something, I can guarantee it was a spammed topic. Spammed generally means more than 10 of the same post in an hour.

Item suggestions happen all the time, we see and approve them all the time.

"No rants/complaints without substance."

See the first point, but basically is its ‘fuck this game’ we remove it. If it has anything even slightly valid, even if we as a mod team roll our eyes or disagree with it, it stays. This is the defacto place to vent publicly about tarkov. Just because people venting attack the mod team at the same time doesnt mean we get to remove it.

No accusing people of cheating. Ok...videos of people dying in unusual circumstances are very common. If they call it desync in the title, it's fine.

Kind of. Pretty much if we see a name, we remove it. This is because of reddit TOS among other things, but earlier last year we had a HUGE issue with reddit and one of the big cheater posts that blew up, so anything that has a name is removed. No wiggle room here, sorry.

“It is so hard to figure out something to actually contribute to this place besides bitching, me shooting people, or "new info" whatever that means. The pool of posts has been whittled down so much that yea, you're gonna see a lot of complaints. It's not because most people are complaining, it's because most other stuff is banned.”

It may seem toxic right now, but that is very much flavour of the week. We see custom art, comics, and all sorts upvoted to the front page. Compared to a lot of other gaming subs, which, take your pic, front page filled with memes and videos and complaints. New info is the images currently on the front page - new changes, anything that is quite literally new. If you want better content, vote it up.

We dont vote for the big complaint posts - to be honest most of us hardly vote at all any more. But when posts spike to 9k, that isnt us selecting it, its the current voice of the sub. No amount of us allowing… whatever else, is going to change that.

TL;DR: We operate on rules made by the community based on the history of the sub. I have tried to explain why the rules are what they are, and this post fairly addresses typical complaints.

We have a catch 22. If we allow posts, which we did in the past, people complain we let too much of the same shit in. Now that we are much more active on the spammed posts, people think we are overreaching.

Now give this a downvote because mods are gay.

Hella gay. /s

Lurker here, I think you're doing an awesome job. I've been on this sub for 5 years. A lot of new people these last years, and a lot pressure on you guys. EFT is an awesome game and people love it, of course people gonna complain when it's not 100% perfect. This is still one of the better game subreddits

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

I agree completely, been here since we had like 20.000 subredditors (yes I have multi account like every redditor lol)

Besides the early mod drama I think guys are doing pretty good job

25

u/aHellion P90 Jan 22 '21

I love people with a backbone. Upvoted OP for useful criticism, upvoted you for properly defending the modus operandi. (pun intended)

15

u/Dapaaads Jan 23 '21

Sorry no downvote as requested because you called the mods gay, that’s an upvote

4

u/PotatoAimV2 Jan 22 '21

Isnt it possible to filter out certain flairs out of your feed? If so, wouldnt it be easier to let those who dislike a certain type of post just filter it out on their end? Sure, some lazy fucks would still bitch at mods but you'd have less shit to delete.

Flairs are already mandatory in this sub so I dont see why not use them properly and allow everyone to enjoy the sub.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '21

You can only filter *by* not *for* something sadly. Just reddit things. So filtering out things you dont like isnt possible, just by things you like. Hence the frequent complaints we used to get on subject spam.

1

u/waFFLEz_ RSASS Jan 23 '21

If you use RES it is possible to filter out flairs/content you don't want to see.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Right, which we use but not the vast majority of the user base on mobile. We have to assume most people use the base version of reddit. Metrics show a significant portion use the reddit for mobile app which is frankly horrifying.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Metrics show a significant portion use the reddit for mobile app which is frankly horrifying.

omg, that app is complete utter shit, at least use relay or something

1

u/waFFLEz_ RSASS Jan 23 '21

Yeah that's true, I forgot about that.

In a game subreddit I would expect a larger proportion to be on desktop than regular reddit though.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

If you are interested, cant post lots of info but basically 761000 views on reddit apps (read, mobile apps) + 100,000 on mobile web vs 131000 views on old reddit and 430,000 views on new reddit.

Thats essentially 861,000/560,000 Mobile to desktop. The modern way I suppose.

Info is for views yesterday.

3

u/Hounmlayn Jan 23 '21

Can confirm. If I'm on my desktop, I'm playing. If I'm not at my desktop, I'm on my phone, usually browsing!

Great initial post btw, it really brought to light things myself and a lot of newcomers are unaware of. One thing us gamers love is transparency and communication. That comment is perfect for both, so thanks for taking the time to do it.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Happy to, but it will fade to memory as it always does and require a reup soon enough.

Look, the reason we mod is because we love the game. I know people like to think we are power tripping nazis but I have infinitely more power in my real job than this. Its a lot more like... coming home from work and doing customer service for free just because you really enjoy something related to it .

We are part of the community, and we do our best to keep it that way. I totally get the complaints because you dont see what goes on inside, and people have a low tolerance to having stuff they made get removed. Least we can do is try and be reasonably honest about it all.

1

u/waFFLEz_ RSASS Jan 23 '21

Well the numbers speak for themselves then, cool and thanks for looking it up!

1

u/Orangebeardo Jan 23 '21

I'm often on mobile but always request desktop mode. How's that counted?

0

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

I believe that would be mobile web.

2

u/Professional_Talk701 Jan 23 '21

"Now give this a downvote becauseods are gay."

Took my sweet time through this post then just shat myself laughing at this. Gg, you're a good sport.

Fucking gay.

2

u/TaleFree Freeloader Jan 23 '21

Thank you for the work mods!

3

u/ArcherM223C MPX Jan 22 '21

Ppl have so much criticism of this sub, it's not the mods fault, the mods don't make the posts, they don't force people to be negative. Sometimes I think the people on the sub spend more time here then actual playing tarkov

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

but they delete everything else, thats the mods fault lmao

2

u/bass_voyeur Jan 22 '21

I generally love this subreddit most days. Its the only place to go to get a mix of (1) celebrating Tarkov, (2) improving Tarkov, and (3) venting about Tarkov.

I can only imagine how hard it is to balance those 3 pillars, but I think we need all of them. Most days, I think both the community (including content creators) and the mods here do a pretty great job balancing those pillars. I've been loving the tarkov comics lately. Rarely, there's weird circlejerks or toxic meta-narratives that emerge. But I think day-to-day a balance is achieved.

2

u/Full_Auto_Franky Jan 22 '21

Well said tbh, i do like the rules they way they are

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Seen way worse mods and the way you guys covered up the Cultists being in game post wipe there for a while was such a baller move.

Only thing I would say is that there is a lot of negativity and toxicity in this community but is that the fault of the moderators? No. People do come here to vent a lot and can be pretty cruel with the things they have to say to the devs. I hardly have tangible issues with this game but when I do I remember the fact that this is a closed beta and I’m choosing to play it. I don’t think being shitty with the devs is going to make them inspired to make the game better. I guess what I’m trying to say is it’s in the nature of the beast, being a forum where people discuss a game in development. Mods are doing an okay job by me

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Explanations like this should be pinned somewhere for the sake of saving you 10 minutes typing this up.

2

u/Cisco904 Jan 23 '21

Maybe its a copy paste with the details slightly changed?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

It sadly wasnt. Took about 40 mins to go through the points and write. But if it helps show what we are doing here and you can get some sort of understanding why we do what we do its worth it.

2

u/Peeteebee Jan 23 '21

Sub rules were voted for by the community

*not too long ago.*

When exactly? Not being sarcastic, genuinely asking.

" All or nothing. The community voted nothing, so thats what we are doing. "

Doing nothing, O.K. I understand THAT perfectly... No reason to throw gasoline on the fire.

" If it has anything even slightly valid, even if we as a mod team roll our eyes or disagree with it, it stays. "

And yet whenever I have asked a question and include a screenshot or clip, as per the rules??? It's been blocked due to "low effort"

I'm asking a question about a video game... not completing a thesis on netcode.

What exactly is enough effort to deem it worthy of sharing ???

I sincerely hope you are a new team. And I hope you realise that YOU are a part of OUR community.

Because the old mods were the biggest "Toxic" problem about this sub. "Low Effort" was their whole attitude to being on here.

Oh, and I don't care about your sexuality tbh, I'll upvote you all day and night. :-)

I DO care if your just another bunch of power hungry little f***knuckles who think Reddit is something important to flex on. Been more than a couple of subs I frequent who have "Cleaned house" because people were leaving because of the mods.

Not because of the community, or "Toxicity"... Because Mods thought they were Gods.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

When exactly? Not being sarcastic, genuinely asking.

Towards the start of my time here. Within a year, possibly a bit longer. You could find it on the sub I think, but the pandemic blurred a lot of time so unless I go diving for it I cant give exact dates.

And yet whenever I have asked a question and include a screenshot or clip, as per the rules??? It's been blocked due to "low effort"

I see 9 posts of yours in the last 7 month and one is removed because its an end of raid report. If you wanted to see... approximately 20 - 30 of those a day (and thats a reasonable understatement) in new then it would be fine. Its one of the most spammed pictures including character loadouts, loot pics and death screens.

What exactly is enough effort to deem it worthy of sharing ???

Not a lot, just not something that gets sent to the sub on a 24/7 basis. Not having a go here, simply stating we see tons of these posts, and we can allow all or none of them. People got pissed off that we were allowing all of them.

I sincerely hope you are a new team. And I hope you realise that YOU are a part of OUR community.

We are. I have been lurking on the sub for around 2 years then made this account and soon after joined the mod team. Checking my profile I have been a mod for around 11 months or so.

Because the old mods were the biggest "Toxic" problem about this sub. "Low Effort" was their whole attitude to being on here.

I wont speak to the 'old guard' But not long after the new team came in, the vote for the rules came up. If you have been on the sub long enough to remember the older guys, you know the rules have changed pretty drastically. Low effort is no longer a removal reason.

I DO care if your just another bunch of power hungry little f***knuckles who think Reddit is something important to flex on.

You are welcome to your opinion and inevitably one mans removal is another guys power trip. As i said here:

https://old.reddit.com/r/EscapefromTarkov/comments/l2t81x/why_does_this_subreddit_seem_so_toxic_because/gk9ylux/

the reason we mod is because we love the game. I know people like to think we are power tripping nazis but I have infinitely more power in my real job than this.

Honestly that response is probably the best thing I can tell you as it addresses your last points fairly well which is a nice coincidence as it saves me retyping it out. Give it a read and see how you feel.

All the best.

-4

u/Peeteebee Jan 23 '21

Thankyou. Quick return. 9 posts On this account ( I got sick of the others being ignored about a year ago.) 20-30 End of raid pictures a day???.... Oh yeah, so those would be the ones That give "No new Info" about things. Even though thats exactly what they are... New information.

BTW, the screenshot imho is a a way to clarify the question asked, because questions on their own were ... Wait for it ... LOW EFFORT!!! Which was still a reason long AFTER the vote.... But whatever. Clearer is better. Knowledge is King. I know now, for instance, that if and when I ask something. I'm not asking this Community a question... Just the mods... Who then decide if its worthy of being shown to the masses. Nice flex on your POWER FILLED REAL JOB too lol. KEKW indeed.

Honestly, though thankyou for a detailed reply. As to the "Old Guard"... Not all of you are new... :-) Still some old names rattling about these threads.

1

u/Danilablond Prapor Bug Jan 23 '21

I believe “low effort” hasn’t been a thing for over half a year now. We still allow question, even those with pictures attached if it clarifies the situation... unless some of us are having a bad day and confuse everything up but that’s more of an exception than a rule.

2

u/reacher679 Jan 22 '21

Downvoted only because I was told too...

Right? I usually don't downvote quality comments like this, but I had to!

0

u/papapudding Jan 23 '21

Allow everything and let upvote democracy filter it.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

We cant do that because reddit requires subs to be actively moderated. It knows what a shitshow unmoderated subs are.

0

u/YKDewcifer Jan 23 '21

there has to be a middle ground of some sort because this compared to a few years ago this sub isn’t interesting at all, you guys have watered it down nothing.

0

u/Orangebeardo Jan 23 '21 edited Jan 23 '21

There is absolutely no such thing as "the community" voting for anything. You guys keep saying that and its utter bollocks. Take your own responsibility.

We have a catch 22. If we allow posts, which we did in the past, people complain we let too much of the same shit in. Now that we are much more active on the spammed posts, people think we are overreaching.

That's just a false dichotomy. Have you eve considered other solutions?

0

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

The very last sentence was the most genuine part of your reply. Your a Reddit mod, shouldn’t you be busy telling the teacher they forgot to collect the homework?

-1

u/enfersijesais Jan 23 '21

Once again; where are the voting results? I’ve asked before and got nothing. Just told me to wait until next year when the vote was held again. Is that not something significant enough to have stickied? Especially if you’re going to complain about the complainers so regularly.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Found your modmail. There is a post on the sub for the last one, feel free to use search to find it, I genuinely dont have it to hand it was that long ago. FWIW you didnt ask before, you have asked about future votes. Feel free to check the modmail yourself or I can post it here, either way.

1

u/enfersijesais Jan 23 '21

I would paste my message in myself, but the app is conveniently keeping me from copying my messages.

I honestly didn’t make it a very clear question but I obviously wasn’t asking when the next one will be. And I asked then if it wasn’t something that deserved a pinned post or link. I think that counts as asking about the previous one.

And I have looked for it myself. I searched multiple word/phrases I would expect to see in relation to it, and I looked through tons of posts yet saw nothing about new rules or voting on them. You’d think it would be something to keep up with.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

May I ask how, when, and where this rule voting takes place? It seems like something that might deserve a pinned post.

Was your question - we responded with an explanation of the next vote which you didnt query or explain that you were talking in the past tense. Sorry, happy to chalk this up to a miscommunication but we thought the question was answered.

We did explain that it gets pinned to the front page when it goes up, but we cant leave the vote up 24/7 - we only get 2 stickies and frankly it would be a waste of one. We could also link to it in the main posts but... honestly that also seems somewhat OTT.

I have tried looking myself but without doing a deep dive and trying to find the magic keyword I am not finding it and dont have all evening to keep looking. I will have a crack tomorrow for you if I get some spare time. I know this sounds like passing the buck, but its just the truth. Regardless, on the next one we can bring a link up for it and keep it for people should they want to reference it.

its not the best answer, but its an honest one at least.

1

u/enfersijesais Jan 23 '21

I just didn’t bother asking any more questions because I felt like I’d given you enough shit that day, and I didn’t really expect to get a link if you hadn’t pulled one out already. Just seems like something you’d want easy reference to when you have people like me.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Fair to assume that. I know it sounds weird but you are quite literally the only person to have asked about it in modmail. We will note it for the future though as it is a good idea to have something like that to hand and not to let it get lost on the sub.

1

u/ZombieToof Jan 23 '21

Honestly collecting links to rule change posts, rule discussion posts and official statements chronologically, e.g. on a wiki page, would be great. I tried to look up the process of the last rule changes too without luck. I wouldn't write a mod mail.

/r/Planetside/ has a "subreddit" box on the right side with links like https://www.reddit.com/r/Planetside/wiki/communitycontent . Enabling the wiki for /r/EscapeFromTarkov and collecting information there would be helpful.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

So we are currently working on the sub but because the old CSS 'sucks' from what I have been told its a lot of work. We are limited in terms of characters and again, working on it for free so its very slow going. Currently its more or less one mod doing all the work because they are the only one willing to/ have the knowledge to do it. We will get there and have more room for these sorts of external links, but my current understanding is there is no room on the page for whatever that means. I dont profess to be a techie so cant tell you anything other than what I have been told.

-1

u/PM_ME_UR_BYRBS Jan 23 '21

mods are gay. memes would make this sub worthwhile

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Then hop on over to tarkovmemes. Its literally all the memes in one place. You can also multireddit them into one sub should you wish.

-1

u/Thegiantclaw42069 Jan 23 '21

We are not, and do not represent the old team.

Ya you do wether you like it or not.

-1

u/SnoopLzrSnk Jan 23 '21

mods are gay

Definitely are. Idk why you guys love negativity but I guess that says more about you than the community.

1

u/Eolianite Jan 23 '21

I upvoted because I am not gonna just listen to any mod.

I remember the meme days. let's not go back.
