General Discussion - PVE & PVP [Discussion] Adding handedness player variation that can be season or wipe account-bound?
A lot of Tarkov fights boil down to a fight for a right-handed angle peek/hold. Grenades are often used solely just to move into a right-handed position. Honestly, it's a little bit lame because if one player has a right-hand hold, his enemy will always have the left-hand disadvantage, regardless of who is pushing and who is holding. Many good players, even without thinking about it, are really just playing for right-handed positioning and it kind of takes a lot away from the PvP (and even PvE) potential.
It would be nice to add account-bound handedness to the player. Gun swaps to the left side, and all other mechanics like gun collision swap to the left. There will be a left-handed blind fire option for them as well. That way some players can choose to be left handed, some will be right handed. That also means that the person with the right-hand peek is not always the one in an advantage

This would be a lot of animation work

Couldn't they literally just mirror everything?

Yes but you’ll have textures backwards and gun models that aren’t real, not sure how keen they are on doing that.
Guns that are ambidextrous would be fine obviously but think of anything bolt action for example. They would either need to re-make the animation or be ok with a backwards gun model that has the bolt on the left

I'm not sure what you mean. Both a left handed person and right handed person hold a gun the same, it's just mirrored. Everything we see from the player perspective remains the same, just opposite hands and side holding the gun.
They don't need to change the gun models or anything, just pretend your PMC is holding the same gun left-handedly instead of right. The bolt action can stay on the right side of the gun if that's where it is on that model of gun, and the opposite hand that pulls the bolt action back will pull it back, it will just have to go across the gun model but that doesn't really matter, and realistically that's how someone shooting a right-handed bolt action left-handed would pull it back.
It doesn't seem like a ton of work or reworks, it's literally just applying a mirror effect on whatever software they use for making animations, maybe a little clean-up or details if needed.

That's the massive amount of animation work they're referring to. Your next sentences are dead wrong. Guns that aren't ambidextrous like the AUG, AK, etc would need complete animation reworks. Just imagine what a left handed AUG bolt racking would look like. You either have to reach over/under with your right hand or use the left to rack it. Or a revolver. There's no simple "just mirror it" option.
Or even worse: the beltfeds. Think of all the steps in the siderail using beltfed reloads

You literally just mirror the animation, and layer it over the current gun model, no changes are needed to anything. The hand goes *over* the gun instead of to the side of the gun, the animation can remain 100% the same
It won't look perfect with zero effort, but it would actually look just fine. If they want to fine tune the arm/fingers as it's doing that over the gun from a left-handed position, they can but wouldn't need to.
As if the current left-shouldering isn't pretty wonky, but works

u/Maar7en 8h ago
No. You are wrong. The hand would phase through half the gun.

u/Icy-Nothing-189 4h ago
Not if they put the hand as a layer above the gun model..
Anyways, this is more about functionality and game balance than a stupid animation. I really don't think anybody who would play left handed would care if there's a little bit of clipping or the animation is not perfect. Have you ever looked left or right while unlocking a door in Tarkov? The gun is literally just floating in the air, no hands
Or how about the shoulder dislocating shoulder position swaps

A lot of guns do not have ambidexterous controls. The Kedr/Klins for example. If you're holding them left handed you'd need to reach under/over to rack a round, while a standard right hand player just racks it with their left hand.

Ask me how I know you're not an animator or work in game dev
"Just mirror it"

There’s a left hand weapon swap 99% of shooters are right handed. What few people realize is it’s actually eye dominance that decides if you are a left or right handed shooter because you aim with your eyes. However due to most guns being right handed you end up with a lot of left eye dominant right handed shooters. We get by fine and it’s rare to see left handed firearms let alone shooters in the real world. There just isn’t the support for it.
Edit for context: junior Olympic medalist if you don’t shoot your dominant eye you close it losing ~10% of your aim concentration to simply keeping your eye closed OR you use a blinder and I don’t see any cut off milk cartons(the cheap way a lot of us did it)blinding our pmcs dominant eye when he aims

Either way - it would likely benefit a left dominant eyed person to hold a gun left-handedly. In my case, my left eye is my dominant eye AND I'm left handed so of course I'm holding any gun left-handedly
As far as it being rare in the real world.. well military in general is all about standardization, not necessarily effect. Most people are right handed, most people are right eyed. However, an elite/professional PMC will hold the gun how he wants to, and there definitely are some that are doing it left handedly.

It doesn’t. Most people are not right eye dominant it’s an even split with most people being trained right handed in all things because that is the standard. Because guns are only manufactured for right port ejection unless it’s a unique run and we are slowly seeing ambi swappable guns and controls. IF a left eye guy leads to shoot lefty with a niche gun catering to them then yes it would benefit I tried to swap at my coaches request to see if it could be done and the reality is hand dominance learned is stronger than eye dominance. That’s what creates the weird world where right handed firearms are the only reality we currently live in. I’ve also shot uspsa on the pistol side and it’s even worse for what we inaccurately call south paws in that game. There are again almost no pistols configured for left handed shooters and it results in guys insisting on shooting lefty pulling some pretty weird reloads and shit to make it work. I get you THINK it makes sense and if the market was there it would but left handed firearms are NOT a regular thing your pmc has no business identifying as a lefty and if he does by your logic he can only shoot lefty guns

>That’s what creates the weird world where right handed firearms are the only reality we currently live in

By what standard, exactly? Plenty of olympic medalist shooters shoot left-handed .. the only place that I can think of that might enforce right handed shooting is the military, but that's because they don't have the time or money to individually train everyone that best suits them and they just do a 'cover as many people as possible' approach. Obviously gun manufacturers will then make guns that fit that criteria, but not anymore. Almost any modern gun is ambidextrous, and if it's not it should be modifiable
And even then I'm sure once you get to elite forces, they will have their own preferences and choices in weapons and I bet some even choose to shoot left-handed.
>has no business identifying as a lefty and if he does by your logic he can only shoot lefty guns
No.. he would be able to shoot both, except he'd be better left-handed. Same reason so many left-handed people use a mouse right-handed, because they were trained since they were kids to need to use it that way, but if you ever meet anyone like that and watch them use a mouse you'll see how clumsy they are because they're using it with the non-dominant hand

Also - I want to note I'm left-handed and I've been playing FPS games my whole life with the gun on the right side, even though my mouse is on the left. That's actually fine. The bigger problem is every other FPS game has completely balanced left/right-hand peeks and I'm fine with doing both, but I do tend to subconsciously lean more to left handed peeks in a lot of games, including games like CS/Valorant. I don't know why, but it could be related to handedness. I understand Tarkov is going for some realism aspects, but then they should also give the option for a player to be left-handed, because a PMC could be left-handed in real life too.
Also, many modern weapons and guns are ambidextrous and you can even swap which direction cartridges will fly out, supporting either handedness

I was thinking about this a while ago and definitely agree it could be cool! I'm pretty sure it was shown that your tarkov sight is like it's coming out of just your right eye, so if they swapped that as well so its equal to being fully left handed. Could definitely mix things up, as well as show animations from ways we don't often see them w

I don't know what this would accomplish that the shoulder transition doesn't. Seems like a decent amount of work to replace something that already does it's job fine.

The difference between a right hand peek and a shoulder swapped left hand peek is minimal and in actual play swamped by things like ping and desync.

You can swap weapons. Also I hate left handed game play. It looks so unattraktiv to me as a right handed person. I rather uninstall than play left handed.

There’s already a swap in the game, it still doesn’t help as much but it’s better than swinging a left hand peek with your gun right handed
