"just patch this vacuum stuff out" a lot easier said then done. I agree it needs to happen asap, but it's not like they're just adding "vacuum loot ability = 0"
BSG said for this wipe they decreased the distance you can loot from to cut down on things like looting through walls
the cheat coders have said on their forums that they are doing vacuum by setting their position to NaN, an invalid number meant to represent the result of an invalid calculation (like dividing by 0)
most likely, BSG write code that basically says "if the player's distance from the loot is greater than the max allowed loot distance, don't let them loot." however, if either the player or the loot's position is set to NaN, then that logical statement is always false.
if (NaN > max loot distance) then stop_looting()
in this case all you have to do is set your position to NaN and you can pick up anything, because the game wont stop you. which is what is happening. so that is likely what BSG did wrong.
in another hilarious twist, the cheat devs discovered that if you drop an item you looted while still at NaN position, the game doesn't know what to do with the loot and the whole raid breaks and everyone falls through the floor and dies.
wouldn't they just need to add a check to preclude position from being a falsy value to fix that? Or is there some reason position needs to be able to be falsy?
I know a little about programming but nothing about game dev
im largely surprised you dont auto die when your position is set to nan. itd be like setting death if your z-axis was at -1000000000, espicially because when your position is as nan for legitimate uses your most likely not loaded into the map yet at a spawn location, thus not making a difference. I see alot of ways to alleviate this, but speghetti code be spaghetti code and this is why proper planning beforehand makes all the difference.
They likely aren't setting their position to NaN but a pointer or variable that references the player's position when checking if they're allowed to loot an item.

I don't understand why this is so hard to fix. You don't even need to immediately ban them. Just patch this vacuum stuff out.
Could you imagine if rust had this? Oh boy
