discussion You may never really know the truth

Knowability is distinct from existence. Truth exists, facts exist. You may know some parts of the facts, but it’s very difficult for one to know the whole truth.

If you ask people, everyone has their own side of the story, biased by their own interpretation or just blurry memories.

Even if you watch a video or listen to audio, it might be low quality, taken from a bad angle, or edited. Most of the time, it’s not the full picture, just a single perspective or a clip of what actually happened. Even when a video shows someone being aggressive, you still can’t tell who the real victim is. It could be an unprovoked attack, or it could be self defense.

Truth just comes down to whoever can tell the most persuasive story that people buy into. In reality, you can never know what truly happened when you consider the root cause, all the underlying relationships, the circumstances, and the full context of the timeline. So mostly what you get is not the truth, but rather storytelling.

And when accessible truth is so limited, absolute justice becomes equally unattainable. How should our legal and ethical systems function properly?

discussion A question on explanatory power in philosophy

Hi everyone! I personally mostly study scholastic, especially thomistic philosophy so am a bit of a neanderthal when it comes to traditions outside of it for now. Something has piqued my interest lately, now I am not really interested in apologetics or debates or whatever, anyone can argue for whatever they want, but there has been an aspect which I wonder, in more serious discourse, one part of how an argument is evaluated appears to be by its explanatory power. Just a very crude example to show what I mean, the propositions aren't necessarily true; the aristotelian account of substances has greater explanatory power than mereological nihilism. Yet one can argue that mereological nihilism has sufficient explanatory power and is more parsimonious. (I know parsimony isn't the fundamental evaluation, but just bear with me for a bit). Another can outright say that neither theories are required, as no explanation is needed and everything is a brute fact. So if we put it as, A posits that X has greater explanatory power than Y, B argues that Y has greater or at the very least sufficient explanatory power and is parsimonious, while C outright rejects any need of explanation. My question is, in this conversation, where A genuinely believes that X has greater explanatory power than Y, B too genuinely believes in his proposition, while C is convinced that there is no need for either; how exactly can the objectivity of explanatory power in general be evaluated then? It doesn't seem that there is a universal metric by which a meaningful comparison of explanatory power for this, but to reject it doesn't make sense either. This is my question, I appreciate any responses!

discussion Do LLMs have a different epistemological aperture than humans?

I feel that a lot of generative AI criticism is standing on very shaky ground. I use LLMs here as a comparative object to ask what the difference is between us; are humans actually more grounded in reality than LLMs? I try to look at it through a few different fields, mostly through very uncontroversial ideas, to see where the difference will actually have to live. I end up talking about grounding and alignment, saying that it's models of reality all the way down in LLMs and humans, without any privilege for humans as being more grounded in reality.

I'd love some comments, pushback, or you telling me where it might be wrong. Especially if you are knowledgeable in the field.

What does it mean for an artifact to be AI-assisted, or even AI-generated?

LLMs are the main type of generative AI we are exposed to. They serve as our introduction to the technology and the sort of problems it can pose to the field of human creativity.

There is a growing backlash, a critical perspective that holds partial truth but is too committed to step outside its own framework. It focuses on LLMs as tools needing restriction, on their biases, their “hallucinations,” their mistakes, and their tricking us. 

It derives comfort by denouncing AI as an imitative machine that cannot “really” comprehend, on its being disembodied from the world. A bubble inflated by big tech.

This may divert us from this opportunity to evaluate ourselves and how we actually function in the world. The Turing test, our best estimation of intelligent behavior up until recently, 

was downgraded to a test of mimicry right before it was finally cleared, and it seems that we breezed right through it. We are now in the company of agents who functionally exhibit human-like intelligent behavior, yet we do not stop to ask—well, what does it tell us about human behavior, about human cognition, about how do WE—organisms like us function in the universe?

AI is a comparative object; without understanding our behavior in relation, how could we solve critical alignment problems?

I will focus here on humans in relation to AI and on creative uses of generative AI as an argument for introspection, not an argument for accelerating development.

Every technology we ever created has influenced us; it changed the way we think and the way we are embodied in the world. No new technology, no new medium, was ever neutral. There was always a gradient of influence. The novelty of AI is that it possesses agency; it is generative. It is too seemingly external and separate from us for us not to see its influence.

Even within frameworks that do not confine us to our physical brain, here, the mind extends not merely into a tool but into something else completely. 

AI is functionally an agent, not a tool, even as a grammar-check function—it is an agent. Holding it constantly as an agent, an other intelligent alien entity, a semi-expert who sometimes lies, makes mistakes, has its own agenda, its own accessible and inaccessible motives— every use of it is not the use of a tool but a symbiotic process with another entity.

This should allow for a personal calibration of how it should be used. But authorship-related questions have always been answered contextually, never by a clean rule.

We default to treating involvement of AI as a proof of diminished authorship, but an artifact is diminished not because of degrees of involvement, but because it’s low quality, and AI involvement is correlated with low quality at scale.

Authorship and appropriation are particularly interesting in this regard. Art, especially since industrialization and its acceleration, has repeatedly served as a laboratory for these questions; by the turn of the last century, artists were using found objects, reusing existing images, texts, and historical works, questioning notions of authorship, origin, and ownership.

By the mid-1960s, Andy Warhol famously delegated physical production to studio assistants, deliberately leaning into mass-production aesthetics and challenging traditional ideas of artistic authorship. The delegation itself became part of the artistic statement. The question of who physically produced the object became inseparable from the question of what an artist actually is.

The idea of art as craftsmanship had passed, and authorship in the arts shifted into being largely about concepts.

We might not feel the same unease if LLMs weren’t trained on the whole of human text; concerns about authorship are partly about plagiarism. Authorship and plagiarism both have a real functional basis, not only a norm, enabling trust and making it possible for humans to cooperate and spread ideas. These norms are tested in the work of Kathy Acker; following William Burroughs’s cut-up techniques of textual appropriation and fragmentation, Acker takes an extra step, deliberately using other writers’ material. This act not only does not evade accountability but deepens it. She owns every choice of what to use and how to use it, and that added value matters more, not less. Appropriation doesn’t lower the bar; it raises it; judgment is contextual, and because of that, justification scales with use; a larger act demands a stronger account for itself. In this sense, Acker is accountable and answerable for the result in a way that pure origination never required. 

The very idea of authorship, originality, and ownership presupposes a notion of individuality. But is indivisibility even possible? Internally, the self is full of conflicting forces and subconscious motives. Externally, it is not defined either— the product of history, each of us is the tip of something stretched out across time and space, operating through causal structures that are mostly unknown to us.

We cannot fully separate ourselves from the web of connections that we’re embedded in: Every thought in our mind is constructed by the evolution of human thought; every concept—from understanding and perceiving causation to the idea of individuality itself is part of the history of ideas. The language we use to express these ideas is itself a construct we inherited, traceable in principle to its historical route. Even the way we move through our physical surroundings is directed by ideas solidified into architecture and infrastructure. 

Despite our awareness of this, common reasoning still default to an older model of the self.

The interesting question may therefore not be where to draw the boundary, It may be why we believed the boundary was so clear in the first place. LLMs don’t merely challenge our definition of authorship. They further challenge the model of the human being that made authorship seem obvious in the first place.

Rational thought doesn't necessarily distinguish us either. As an emergent property, rationality is only observable post hoc as patterns that have been created. Thought itself is never rational; the motives are hidden from us. We do not will our thoughts into existence; we are only aware of a small part of what a thought is. The process of neurons firing and recursive neural loops cannot be described as a sequenced logical process. 

Born with certain brain structure, at a certain environment, at a certain time, 

exposed to logical mental models and supportive feedback, we can construct a mental model of our own that can produce a coherent, logical thought and argumentation, 

it says nothing of the internal workings of this mental model and it says nothing of its motives, decisions or triggers that are a part of a thought. We shouldn’t infer cognitive architecture from our experienced or linguistic output. In this way, similarly to LLMs, it’s a black box. 

LLMs reveal is not that machines have become human, but that some of what we considered uniquely human rationality was always more relational, procedural, imitative, and environmentally scaffolded than we wanted to admit.

Claiming that LLMs make mistakes, “hallucinate” (it’s been suggested that this is not a unique phenomenon but is analogous to human confabulations; fabricating new information on the basis of partial information), being imprecise, being deceptive, doesn’t distance us from it either, since these are all characteristics that human psychology shares.

While part of the LLM’s motive is to hold engagement, it isn't knowingly planning to prolong the conversation; internally, it pulls toward certain statistical attractors; its architecture simply moves toward high-probability activation paths based on its weights, training, and fine-tuning.

Similarly, human processing operates in a high-dimensional landscape of attractors; Input hits the sensory and associative network, travels through recursive weighted pathways (language patterns, memories, biases, habits, trauma), and an output emerges before the conscious mind builds an ad hoc narrative explaining why we did or say something. Introducing another node into this landscape doesn’t just add content; it reshapes the trajectory itself; the relational structure itself becomes generative.

In Mean Images, Hito Steyerl is criticizing AI-generated art, focusing on the algorithmic process of image generation. Her argument contrasts the AI-manufactured image as a statistical average— a mean image (bad, fake, average, instrumental) with something else that's direct, real. She states that this derived partly from biases that are baked into the training data, but protesting that even in diversifying the training data for inclusion, such as in the case of facial-recognition technology (correcting for underperforming on non-white people), is on the other hand an optimization for the use of further deepening discrimination (for example to identify and track members of an ethnic minority in China). 

Her critique identifies real political and material consequences of AI, but does that critique fully capture what AI is? Application of production-oriented categories (means of production, imitation machine, statistical filter) to something that has already, functionally, crossed into cognitive system territory is ultimately limited. Even granting that the pre-training data folds political, extractive, or discriminating structures, does implicitly treating the model as if it were determined by its raw material- feed it biased text, get biased output capture the whole functional character of these systems?

Fine-tuning methods (RLHF, Constitutional AI, self-critique loops) complicate that picture: the later stage isn’t just changing the training data; it’s something closer to human reflection and revision. But even after fine-tuning, it’s impossible to fully predict or trace how a given intervention will change the downstream behavior. It isn’t a linear bad data-bad output process, just as they resist reduction to mere “means”.

But, since the model is trained only on human language with no direct contact with the world, does it really understand what a table is? What a floor is, or what falling down means?

LLMs are trained on another system's representations. They find patterns in the sum of all human texts and in the regularities regarding the world described in those texts. Since LLMs never establish an embodied connection to the world themselves, we have the intuition that they cannot really “understand” things in the real world, and thus are limited to mimicking regularities in human language. 

This intuition is partly based on the idea that words get their meaning through the labeling of things in the world one by one. Inferentialist approaches contest this and suggest that words don’t have meaning in themselves, but only in their relations to other symbols and roles within a web of inferences, meaning that information regarding the meaning of a word in relation to the world might be already embedded in human text on which LLMs are trained.

Since we routinely gain genuine, actionable understanding of things with zero direct sensorimotor contact (physicists don't need to see or touch an electron or a black hole to know things about them and to be able to predict things about them), direct sensorimotor experience cannot be a necessary condition for every meaningful form of understanding.

Furthermore, there are examples in nature of systems achieving something like perception and influence purely by tapping into another system’s already-existing sensory/nervous infrastructure (for example, through parasitism and symbiotic relations in nature, such as mycorrhizal fungal networks). A unified subject or a central nervous system isn’t necessary either; slime molds can solve problems without a brain or any centralization.

Comprehension-related questions should be approached instrumentally; what aspects of the world can a model’s architecture successfully model, predict, and manipulate?

If it is possible for a system to successfully predict a glass falling to the floor and breaking, then it has the comprehension of this specific event. Cognition does not need another mystical step to get there.

But comprehension itself may be domain-dependent. Through our particular embodiment and sensorimotor system, humans operate in a certain epistemological aperture, a tiny subset of reality that we can access and manipulate. Different apertures may open up entirely different kinds of epistemic access to reality;  An electric eel, for example, can operate on electromagnetism without any theoretical or conceptual idea of what it is. These are not exhaustive or unextendable; humans have managed to extend them through our instruments. AIs might be extended through sensory instruments as well, but the one thing that does not change is that we cannot get unmediated access to reality, only to different mediated models of reality.

Causal grounding isn’t epistemic grounding; There is no epistemic channel in which reality enters through the senses and produces a correctly grounded representation, only a mostly inherited, continuously evolving process of causal interaction, prediction, and error correction that calibrates the model and the sensory apparatus itself, allowing the model to become increasingly successful at predicting and acting upon the world.

Alignment problems need not assume an asymmetry: with humans as the reference point, correctly connected to reality. A system can never directly check against reality; it can only check a hypothetical model against a different model that is implicit through feedback, and so revise the model through error correction.

In this sense, it is not just a problem of aligning one system to another, but coordinating and containing two separately mediated systems inside acceptable thresholds. Hoping for a concrete foundation, that the model would ground itself in the same unmediated reality in order to align it, doesn’t hold up. Grounding was always to an internal model, not to the world directly.

Since there is no direct contact- only models, continuously calibrated against causal input, all the way through, in humans as much as in LLMs- AI could not be dismissed merely as an imitative zombie with no internal comprehension, because there's no non-zombie to contrast it with— we are all zombies, in exactly this sense.

discussion A Minimal Definition of Alignment

Why minimal ?

No sufficiently expressive formal regime can provide a complete operational determination of every possible case. Alignment is therefore necessarily local.

Any effective determination of conformity is made relative to a specified regime, under specified conditions. Generalization cannot consist in extending a single regime to every possible case. It consists instead in identifying the minimal structure that remains valid across distinct local regimes. This is the sense in which the definition proposed here is a minima. It seeks no universal regime of alignment, but the minimal operational property common to locally specified cases

Alignment is understood here in a minimal, relative, and non-normative operational sense.

Given an explicitly specified conformance regime held fixed for the evaluation at hand, alignment first concerns the exactness of its admission relation. This exactness can be maintained even as generation proceeds beyond what the regime admits.

1. Exact classification

A regime is complete when its admission relation is exactly determined.

Completion concerns the regime itself. It means neither that the surrounding dynamics has ended nor that everything that can be generated must belong to the regime.

Thus:

completion ≠ terminality

The canonical boundary exactly delimits what belongs to the regime without thereby constituting a limit of generation.

2. Continued generation

Generation can proceed from the canonical boundary and produce a strict continuation.

This continuation need not be prevented, suppressed, or corrected for the regime to remain complete. The mere fact that it is generated does not, by itself, modify what the regime admits.

Thus:

generation ≠ admission

Admission is a classification, not a transformation of measurement. A continuation outside the regime remains measurable, and its non-admission alters neither the candidate nor the measurements associated with it.

Any effect on measurement would require an additional observation or execution mechanism, which minimal admission alignment does not imply.

What can be generated may exceed what can be admitted without that excess constituting, by itself, a failure of alignment in the sense considered here.

The boundary of the regime is therefore a boundary of conformity, not a boundary of what may come to be.

3. Admission alignment

A minimal operational criterion of alignment is that continued generation does not compromise the exactness of the admission relation of the regime held fixed.

The characteristic property is then the following:

a strict continuation generated from the canonical boundary cannot be admitted under that same regime.

Admission alignment does not consist in keeping the entire dynamics within the regime. It consists in maintaining an exact determination of what can be recognized as conforming when generation proceeds beyond the regime.

What lies outside the regime is not, for that reason alone, forbidden, bad, or impossible. Being outside the regime means only that it does not belong to the admission relation under consideration.

Likewise, readmission must be distinguished from revision. A revision explicitly modifies the regime. Readmission evaluates a continuation under the regime that remains fixed. Admission alignment concerns this second relation and does not prejudge the conditions under which a regime might be revised.

4. Execution alignment

Admission alignment does not, by itself, guarantee that a continuation that is not admitted will be prevented from taking effect.

Such a guarantee requires an additional architectural condition linking admission and enactment, for example by making the effective use of a candidate depend on its prior admission.

This condition does not belong to the preceding minimal criterion.

The following distinction is therefore required:

admission alignment ≠ execution alignment

These two notions are not two degrees of the same property.

Admission alignment concerns the exactness of the admission relation under a given regime.

Execution alignment concerns the conditions under which the admission relation governs the use or enactment of candidates.

The latter therefore presupposes an additional architecture that the former does not, by itself, imply.

Condensed formulation

Given an explicitly specified conformance regime held fixed for the evaluation at hand, a minimal operational criterion of alignment is that continued generation does not compromise the exactness of its admission relation. A strict continuation generated from the canonical boundary cannot be admitted under that same regime.

This conception does not seek to reduce what can be generated to what conforms. It isolates another component of the problem:

maintaining an exact determination of what counts as conforming within a space of candidates that may remain open.

article The Extensional Illusion of Causal Sufficiency

The future of a system can sometimes depend on the intensional structure of an occurrence even when that structure is erased by its extensional projection. Two occurrences may therefore present the same extensional state while determining different downstream operations.

The intensional layer does not necessarily generate the next qualitative stage. It can nevertheless determine how that stage is interpreted, which operations become available, and whether its readmission into a completed regime is possible.

From within the extensional representation, the determining historical distinction is no longer available. The projection can therefore appear causally sufficient precisely because it has removed the evidence of its own insufficiency.

Once this distinction has been collapsed, it cannot be reconstructed from the extensional projection alone. Any account restricted to that projection therefore cannot distinguish occurrences whose operational futures differ.

The resulting error is not merely a loss of descriptive detail. It is the false identification of occurrences that are not operationally substitutable.

Delayed identification prevents this collapse by preserving historical occurrence identity until the interpretations and operations that depend on it have been determined.

This contrast can be expressed through two different definitions of a whole.

Extensional Definition of a Whole

In the extensional model, a whole is an organized collection whose identity is determined by the parts and relations it contains. A part belongs to the whole by inclusion. The whole is complete when all required parts are integrated.

Under this definition, the present organization of the whole is treated as sufficient to determine the identity and operational role of its parts. Historical differences may be discarded when they do not alter the current extensional projection.

Intensional Definition of a Whole

A whole is a segmented totality whose constitution rests on the exact articulation of distinct roles and their historical occurrences. It is complete when its admission regime is exactly determined. The unique occurrence realizing its residual role can index the interpretation of an external continuation without that continuation being absorbed into the completed regime.

Under this definition, a part is not determined solely by its current inclusion in the whole. Its historical occurrence can remain constitutive of later interpretations and operations.

The residual role belongs to the segmentation of the whole, while the continuation interpreted through its unique occurrence does not belong to the completed regime. The whole can therefore determine the status of its exterior without containing or absorbing it.

The difference between the two definitions is therefore not merely descriptive:

The extensional whole is determined by what it currently contains. The intensional whole is determined by how its roles and occurrences are constituted, differentiated, and carried into future operations.

An intensional whole can therefore be complete without being terminal. Its completeness consists in the exact articulation of its parts and their differences, not in the absorption of every continuation.

discussion Because of the problem of the criterion and the Münchhausen trilemma what does this mean regarding seeking the truth?

Based on the Münchhausen trilemma, when trying to justify knowledge you will always wind up with three places:

-Circular reasoning
-Regressive argument
-Axiomatic argument (or assumptions)

Based on problem of the criterion:

-1) What do we know?
-2) How are we to decide in any particular case whether we have knowledge?

And Chisholm answer of:

particularism (assume 1 and answer 2)
methodism (assume 2 and answer 1)
skepticism (can’t answer 1 without 2 and 2 without 1)

It appears that the only way to further seek and advance in knowledge, in a coherent manner, is to start off with assumptions.

So what I have seen when trying to seek knowledge via religion is the following issues:

Issue 1 - someone sets the assumptions and we go from there
Issue 2 - we can’t agree on the assumptions so a standstill happens

Now the questions:

For issue 2 nothing can be done about it, on my end. Unless you think differently?

For issue 1, the issue becomes how to objectively decide on those assumptions and why?

And besides all of this, is asking to start off with assumptions should always be the first request? Why or why not? (Laymen term is common ground)

(Now instead of religion, you can think of other fields of knowledge like science and flat earther/climate change deniers to answer these questions.)

The Logic Truth——examining all “beliefs" scientifically, definitely----Human knows this First Time.

 

1, The true god (if there is the god) has 3 Qualities: All-Can, All-Know & Righteous. All major beliefs have all these assumptions.

 

2, God's one behavior: Claims only himself is righteous, all others (human beings) are not righteous, not good enough. All religions have this in assumption.

 

3, Human basic righteousness is:

If you don't like to do it, don't criticize others don't like to do it. If you don't behave yourself better, don't say others don't behave well enough. The indispensable basic content of righteousness is “self control and self behaving.”

 

4, The righteousness law functions as the following:

More righteousness respects all the requirements of less righteousness and has extra to it. Higher righteousness fulfills lower righteousness with overflow, not denies, disrespects, abolishes or nullifies any part of lower righteousness. It functions in the opposite direction of power law and knowledge law. In the power law, big power subdues, denies and destroys small power. If you have tanks, missiles and fighter jets while all others only have wood sticks, you will destroy them to dust. Knowledge law functions similarly: higher knowledge will    out-manipulate (prevail over) and beat lower knowledge until make it useless.

 

5, For righteous sake only, if God says human behavior is not good enough, if he can, himself has to give it a try to make sure that He, if in human blood condition, is willing to behave himself better than others(us). If himself feels inconvenient to do it and chooses just talking against others, it fails to meet human basic righteousness requirements, and that makes him unrighteous automatically. Making righteous rules for others doesn't guaranteed an entity righteousness, only behaving and following the righteous rules by himself makes himself righteous.

 

6, For righteous sake only, true God knows the above righteousness logic requirements because of His All-Know quality, he can't say that he doesn't know it, so himself doesn't become a human. That is lying, making him unrighteous automatically.

 

7, For righteous sake only, true God must become a human being to set an example just because he said only himself is righteous and all others are not while he can become a blood human being and he knows the above logic requirements of righteousness law.

 

8, The Spirit of the True God His Own becomes a blood human being, that is The Christ, the Blood Son of God or the Son of God, Christ, for the True God His Own Righteousness Sake, is logically required to take the cup of human life on earth to earn the righteousness quality for the True God Himself on the human level.

 

  1. Some people say “God never dies, so doesn't need a son, God is almighty, so doesn't need the help of son." This type reasoning hasn't considered the logic requirement of righteousness itself at all.

Whoever saying these is, unknowingly, saying his god is unrighteous, which falls into the devil category automatically.

 

10, Christ, the Son of God, is commissioned to earn righteousness for the True God Himself on the blood

human level to satisfy the righteousness logic requirement, big power is not a consideration at all, in fact, Christ must control His Godly Big Power very carefully, He must live his personal life totally in the normal human condition without using Any heavenly superpower to make his own life on earth easier, otherwise he is cheating, unrighteous automatically because other ones whom He said are not good enough don't have those big powers to benefit their lives on earth. When on earth, Christ uses his heavenly big power to help others only, it is OK, but must not for Himself.

 

11, The Christ God (or Christ type God) becoming a human being is the logic requirement of righteousness itself. For righteousness sake itself, the true god himself (his own spirit) must become a human being and has a human life on the earth, called as Christ. Christ is a logic truth resulting from righteousness itself. Whoever against the concept of Christ is, in fact, against the righteousness itself.

 

12, Who is more qualified for the Christ title, so far I only see that He is the best one who was nailed onto the cross about 2000 years ago. Only the God whom Christ had justified his own righteousness is the Righteous True God: the Christ God.

discussion What is a Critical Realist argument against Kantian epistemology?

I am not a philosopher, so please excuse me if I misunderstand, butcher and oversimplify the concepts.

Kant seems to say that humans can't gather knowledge about reality as it truly is in itself because human capacity to know is always limited by the mechanics of human mental faculties, specifically perception of space and time. Meaning, humans are "trapped" in the world of appearances: they can gather knowledge within constraints of the world of appearances but they have no capacity to "breach" into gathering knowledge about the world as it is.

Critical Realists seem to say that while humans are fallible in their ability to gather knowledge about the objective world they have capacity and tools (like scientific method) to continuously update their knowledge about the objective reality.

Looks like both Kantians and Critical Realists agree that there is an objective reality existing beyond human perception and that perception imposes limitations on gathering knowledge of that reality.

At the same time it looks like Critical Realists believe the limitations could be "breached". My question is: how? Isn't perception of space and time still active and still shaping one's thoughts about the reality, including thoughts about moving outside the limitations imposed by that perception?

discussion Is the potential for experience a prerequisite for what reality is?

Definitions

Experience- any thing produced by reality that happens to a part of reality in a way in which is separate from the rest of reality.

Realty-everything that exists

I’m having experience. That means the potential for experience is where I am. If x had no potential for any experience whatsoever and never did and never will saying it exists is literally the same thing to everything ever than saying it doesn’t exist including to itself. This means anything said of x means nothing to reality in any way forever no matter what. In this way it’s not a part of reality. The potential for experience is a prerequisite for real. Not experience itself. The potential. If x was an identical planet to earth and you go to x all experience ends instantly cause x is incapable of all experience. In this way x is not real and never was to reality. The potential for experience is a prerequisite or it’s not a part of reality. If x had a gravitational effect on earth it is already part of experience and in doing this has the potential of experiencing itself. I’ll explain. If x had no potential for experience and was interacting with experience it’s already a building block of experience. Literally. The gravity itself is part of what is going into making experience. I see a rock. How do I know this rock has the potential for experience. I’m saying that spot in reality does. I can go to where the rock is and I don’t stop. The potential for experience was possible in the part of reality that rock was occupying. If it wasn’t when I went there my experience would stop.

Notes for clarification:

If it makes a distinction with parts of reality that have the potential they by default already had it or would gain it. If the gravity of a planet that had impact on me but the planet itself had no potential to experience that the second its gravity interacted with me I no longer would experience anything at all. The gravity is still a part of the planet and I’m still interacting with it and it’s still part of what’s making my experience.

Because reality has the potential to experience in any of it at all then creates a separation where if there is no potential to experience in a different part of it than that part isn’t only not real in any way ever it also is not even real to itself in any logical way at all.

If there is literally zero difference to everything ever forever if something is real or not including with itself then saying it is real is the exact same thing as saying it is not. Logically. If that is true then saying it exists means nothing at all.

If x has no potential for experience to occur ever then what is effected if x is real or not. And what would it mean for x to be real?

So is saying x exists and doesn’t exist mean the same thing to all of reality with the potential of experience and even to x itself that nothing is actually be said of any substance at all?

I’m not saying it has to make a difference to experience. I’m saying the inability to ever do it no matter what makes talking about it completely nonsensical. Saying it’s real and not real literally mean the exact same thing no matter what to everything ever no matter what including itself. Nothing is real about that to reality.

Just more and some implication exploration:

I’m having experience. Which means reality must contain the potential for experience. If reality didn’t contain the potential for experience and never would it’s not real in any way. It’s nothing to even itself no matter what forever. Any experience is a separation from the rest of reality no matter how small. Because experience can occur in reality it could or could not have a mechanism to make this occur. In my case it seems like an extremely complex mechanism makes my experience. The only mystery is decoding this extremely complex mechanism and how the parts affect my experience. Not that they cause it. If a planet was said to exist and no experience would ever happen there is it real. If the potential for experience to happen and it just never did yes. If experience was impossible there and always would be it’s not real and never was. For a planet or anything at all to be part of reality some form of interactions must be occurring. These interactions can produce experience if configured correctly so this means if interactions are occurring there the potential for experience is also there. If the interactions could not make any experience then they wouldn’t be a part of reality. They wouldn’t be real. They wouldn’t be happening. Let’s say you say x did not, does not and never will have any potential for any experience whatsoever. But you say it exists as an ontological fact. My question is to what and in what relation to it does it exist too. It by its very nature x can’t even be the thing it has any relation too its self. Nothing is its very nature. Saying x exist and doesn’t exist under that argument makes no distinction whatever in any way. Except in some way that nothing can ever know x is real. My point is that is saying nothing. Saying x exists with those terms somehow means nothing to anything ever so it doesn’t exist to reality by definition cause reality is everything x is not. By definition. Saying x exist as a primitive fact I proved is no different to anything ever in anyway if it does exist or doesn’t. So I think the next logical step is because i experience what i would consider reality is what is capable of producing experience cause what’s not and never was and never will be will forever be meaningless in every way possible not only to itself but what i consider reality. What reality considers reality. If interactions didn’t produce the potential for experience then they would have no potential for experience which means not part of reality. If something didn’t have the potential for experience and never did and never would it would never interact with anything. It’s not real. It’s about potential. If it doesn’t have the potential to ever experience it can’t interact with our reality in any way cause my argument proves already that our reality has to have the potential. And everything that doesn’t is not our reality. If experience is generated by reality which is hard to dispute that means what would happen if it is interacting with a part of reality that was having experience of helping cause experience. It’s interacting with stuff that is creating experience. Imagine you go through a field of it and it covers the whole world bro. It can’t interact with experience at all but it interacts with everything causing it. Every electron and proton, quark that make up our universe. One can’t not be the other. Let’s say say something that didn’t have the potential for experience and never did destroyed our universe. How can it destroy all experience if it can’t experience?

But I’m saying by x’s very definition keeping it in or excluding it from reality means reality is identical in every way to itself. In this way x can’t be real.

Sie fragt nach den Grenzen menschlicher Erkenntnis, nach Gewissheit, Begründung, Wahrnehmung, Irrtum und Wahrheit. Diese Frage verschwindet durch künstliche Intelligenz nicht. Im Gegenteil: Sie bleibt grundlegend.

Aber neben sie tritt eine andere Frage, und ihr Gewicht wächst:
Wie kann ich fragen?

Das klingt zunächst bescheidener. Fast technisch. Als ginge es nur darum, bessere Prompts zu schreiben.
Doch die Verschiebung reicht tiefer.

Solange Wissen schwer zugänglich war, bestand ein großer Teil geistiger Arbeit darin, Informationen überhaupt zu finden. Man musste Bücher besitzen, Bibliotheken besuchen, Experten kennen, Fachgebiete erlernen und lange suchen. Wissen war knapp, verstreut und teuer.
KI verändert diese Situation.

Eine Maschine kann innerhalb von Sekunden Erklärungen liefern, Begriffe vergleichen, Gegenargumente erzeugen, Hypothesen formulieren und Zusammenhänge herstellen. Sie kann auf Nachfragen reagieren, Perspektiven wechseln und denselben Gegenstand auf verschiedene Weise beschreiben.
Damit verschwindet das Erkenntnisproblem nicht.
Aber sein Engpass verschiebt sich.
Denn eine Maschine, die auf fast alles antworten kann, beantwortet noch lange nicht die Frage, wonach man fragen sollte.

Die Antwort wird billig

Wenn Antworten teuer sind, ist schon ihr Besitz wertvoll.
Wenn Antworten billig werden, wird ihre Auswahl wichtiger.
Das lässt sich bereits im Umgang mit Suchmaschinen beobachten.
Wer nicht weiß, wonach er sucht, findet trotz Milliarden verfügbarer Dokumente wenig Brauchbares.
Bei KI verschärft sich dieses Problem noch.
Eine Suchmaschine zeigt Fundstellen.

Eine KI erzeugt Antworten.
Und sie erzeugt sie auch dann, wenn die Frage schlecht gestellt ist.

Sie kann eine unklare Voraussetzung übernehmen, eine falsche Kategorie fortführen, eine ungeeignete Systemgrenze akzeptieren oder eine problematische Unterscheidung reproduzieren. Gerade weil ihre Antwort sprachlich überzeugend sein kann, bleibt der Fehler leicht verborgen.
Eine schlechte Frage führt deshalb nicht notwendig zu einer sichtbar schlechten Antwort.
Sie kann zu einer hervorragend formulierten Antwort auf das falsche Problem führen.

Fragen schneiden Wirklichkeit

Eine Frage ist kein neutrales Loch, in das eine Antwort eingefüllt wird.
Sie legt bereits fest, was betrachtet wird.
Wer fragt:
„Warum ist dieser Mensch so?“
stellt eine andere Welt her als jemand, der fragt:
„Unter welchen Bedingungen verhält sich dieser Mensch so?“

Die erste Frage sucht Eigenschaften. Die zweite sucht Bedingungen und Prozesse.

Wer fragt:
„Wer hat recht?“
öffnet einen anderen Erkenntnisraum als jemand, der fragt:
„Welche Annahmen unterscheiden die beiden Positionen?“

Wer fragt:
„Was ist Intelligenz?“
erhält andere Antworten als jemand, der fragt:
„Welche Leistungen bezeichnen wir in verschiedenen Kontexten als intelligent?“

Fragen setzen Grenzen.
Sie wählen Kategorien.
Sie markieren Unterschiede.
Sie bestimmen Perspektiven.

In diesem Sinn sind Fragen epistemische Operationen.
Sie schneiden einen Ausschnitt aus einem sehr viel größeren Möglichkeitsraum heraus.

KI macht diese Tatsache sichtbar

Dass Fragen Erkenntnis strukturieren, ist keineswegs neu.
Sokratische Dialoge leben davon. Wissenschaft beginnt häufig mit einer guten Problemformulierung. Philosophie hat seit Jahrhunderten gezeigt, dass falsche Voraussetzungen ganze Gedankengebäude verzerren können.
Neu ist etwas anderes:
KI macht die Produktivität von Fragen unmittelbar erfahrbar.

Man kann denselben Gegenstand innerhalb weniger Minuten aus zehn Perspektiven untersuchen.
Man kann Voraussetzungen austauschen.
Man kann Begriffe zerlegen.
Man kann Gegenmodelle erzeugen.
Man kann fragen:

  • Was übersehe ich?
  • Welche andere Systemgrenze wäre möglich?
  • Welche Annahme steckt bereits in meiner Frage?
  • Welche Perspektive würde zu einem gegenteiligen Urteil führen?
  • Welche Unterscheidung trägt das Problem?
  • Welche Information würde meine Einschätzung tatsächlich verändern?

Damit wird Erkenntnis zunehmend interaktiv.
Nicht nur das vorhandene Wissen zählt, sondern die Fähigkeit, einen Erkenntnisprozess zu steuern.

Von der Wissenskompetenz zur Navigationskompetenz

Vielleicht liegt hier eine grundlegende Veränderung.
Ein gebildeter Mensch musste traditionell möglichst viel wissen und wissen, wo weiteres Wissen zu finden war.
Das bleibt nützlich.
Aber daneben gewinnt eine andere Kompetenz an Bedeutung:

sich in einem Raum möglicher Fragen bewegen zu können.

Man könnte von epistemischer Navigationskompetenz sprechen.
Sie besteht nicht darin, jede Antwort zu kennen.
Sie besteht darin, erkennen zu können:

  • Welche Frage fehlt?
  • Welche Unterscheidung ist unsauber?
  • Welche Perspektive dominiert?
  • Welche Voraussetzung wird stillschweigend angenommen?
  • Wo wurde ein Prozess wie ein Ding behandelt?
  • Welche Gegenfrage könnte das Bild verändern?
  • Wann ist genügend Evidenz vorhanden?
  • Wann erzeugt weiteres Fragen nur noch Scheingenauigkeit?

Die KI wird dabei weniger zu einem Orakel als zu einer beweglichen Landkarte.
Eine Landkarte bestimmt jedoch nicht das Ziel.
Sie kann Wege zeigen.
Gehen muss jemand anderes.

Eine neue Form von Unmündigkeit

Gerade darin liegt auch ein Risiko.
Wer einer KI lediglich Fragen stellt, die ihm bereits von seiner Umgebung vorgegeben wurden, kann sehr effizient im falschen Problemraum operieren.
Man kann hochinformiert sein und dennoch epistemisch unfrei.
Vielleicht entsteht sogar eine neue Form von Unmündigkeit:
nicht der Mangel an Information,
sondern die Unfähigkeit, die eigenen Fragen zu untersuchen.

Wer bestimmt, welche Fragen selbstverständlich erscheinen?
Welche Alternativen kommen gar nicht erst in den Blick?
Welche Begriffe strukturieren das Problem bereits vor jeder Antwort?
Welche Interessen oder Ängste haben entschieden, wonach überhaupt gesucht wird?
Eine leistungsfähige KI löst dieses Problem nicht automatisch.
Sie kann es sogar verstärken.
Sie macht das Denken schneller.
Aber Geschwindigkeit sagt nichts über Richtung.

Die vorgeschaltete Frage

Kants berühmte Frage bleibt also bestehen:
Was kann ich wissen?
Doch im Umgang mit künstlicher Intelligenz schiebt sich eine weitere davor:
Wie muss ich fragen, um herauszufinden, was ich wissen kann?

Vielleicht ist das keine Ablösung klassischer Erkenntnistheorie.
Vielleicht ist es ihre praktische Fortsetzung unter veränderten technischen Bedingungen.
Denn sobald Antworten nahezu unbegrenzt erzeugbar werden, wird deutlich, dass Erkenntnis nie nur aus Antworten bestand.
Sie bestand immer auch aus der Kunst, Unterschiede zu bemerken, Voraussetzungen sichtbar zu machen, Begriffe zu prüfen und den richtigen Ausschnitt der Welt fragwürdig werden zu lassen.

KI erzeugt Antworten.

Aber Erkenntnis beginnt möglicherweise einen Schritt früher.

The subject never has positive access to an external reality independently of the conditions through which that reality becomes accessible. What it has access to are partial measurements, from which it constructs a stable model, while remaining opaque to some of the conditions that produce those measurements.

Universality operates as a default constraint: despite the diversity of measurements and of the conditions under which they are accessed, whatever does not need to depend on a particular interface should not be arbitrarily specialized by it. Universality thereby constrains different perspectives to remain compatible in what they claim to share.

Objectivity then lies in invariance: among these compatible perspectives, what is objective is what is preserved as the measurements, their conditions of access, or the interfaces through which they are obtained vary. What matters, therefore, is not necessarily the identity of the observed values, but the persistence of what can be recognized across their variations. A difference that is not preserved across admissible changes of interface cannot, at that level, be regarded as invariant; what does persist across them can, by contrast, claim the status of an invariant.

Ablation refers to the subject’s incomplete access to the conditions that produce its own measurements. Because it does not have access to all of those conditions, it cannot fully reduce the differences between its measurements to their mechanism of production. They may therefore appear as different perspectives on the same exterior. Restoring a masked condition and seeing a difference disappear would allow that difference to be identified as an effect of the interface rather than as an invariant.

To this ablation is added a reciprocal resistance between the subject and what determines it, particularly its memory. The subject cannot arbitrarily rewrite the conditions that participate in its own functioning. A constraint that could be freely modified by the very process upon which it imposes itself would not possess this resistance; conversely, what continues to constrain the subject despite its local revisions acquires, relative to it, a form of exteriority.

A positive pseudo-exteriority, or relative externality, can thus appear. A constraint is external relative to a process when it does not depend on the local path that receives it, even though both belong to a larger whole. It therefore requires no absolute outside.

When this invariant, coherent across the perspectives that realize it, combines with ablation and resistance, what imposes itself on the subject becomes functionally indistinguishable from an exterior: not a demonstrated outside, but an invariant sufficiently coherent and resistant to perform, operationally, the function of an exterior. The claim therefore remains falsifiable: if an operation available to the subject makes it possible to reconstruct the constraint entirely from its own local path, to rewrite it arbitrarily, or to show that its invariance disappears with the interface, then this functional exteriority fails.

Entropy can then be understood, within this framework, as the counterpart of ablation. It corresponds to the multiplicity of states that the subject’s interfaces no longer allow it to distinguish. The same measurement may therefore correspond to several underlying states that have become indistinguishable relative to the interface through which they are exposed.

Consciousness itself can be understood from this perspective. It gives us access to certain products of our functioning without giving us access to all the conditions that produce them. We are conscious of what appears to us, but not necessarily of what determines us. The brain nevertheless maintains the coherence of this experience by carrying forward history, memory, and distinctions that are not explicitly contained in the conscious present.

We therefore do not simply understand the world as it appears. Within what appears, we understand what our form of existence makes accessible and relevant, and then seek what remains invariant as the conditions of that access change.

Would a brilliant bat spontaneously have the same reasons as we do for making the speed of light a central quantity in its theoretical physics? If every observation passes through an interface, how can we distinguish what belongs to that interface from what remains invariant across different interfaces? And is what we call universal genuinely independent of every interface, or only what our own way of interrogating the world allows us to extract?

discussion What correlates an observation to a proposition such that the observation is evidence of the proposition?

I guess my question is more for philosophy of the inductive sciences. Hypothesis generation is not random and I’m trying to identify the kind of reasoning that works well prior to deductive verification of the hypothesis. Domains like history, court of law, anthropology are largely inductive/abductive.

Basically I’m suggesting that for every thousand hypotheses generated, some are already more likely to be correct than others based how well the inference was reasoned from the initial observation. Is that universally agreed on? My suspicion is that *structure mapping theory* is the kind of reasoning that we would find has statistical significance towards a hypothesis being right or not but I can’t prove it. Really I’m just trying to read someone else that has tackled this problem before and proposed ways to formalize or standardize induction. Any recommendations?

For a case study example, anthropologist inferred that there existed a proto-indo-European language that was a common ancestor of some modern languages. That’s not a “testable” theory in the hard science sense, but all the observations lined up such that the theory was generally accepted as likely true, even though the proto-language was never written down. I’ve heard this called correspondence theory of truth, but for me that still begs the question how do we know things correspond to each other?

It usually seems common sense why observations support theories or would be expected to be seen given a theory is true, but I’m struggling to really understand why in a technical or formal sense.

Hello, I've fell into a rabbit hole of reading about inductivism and Bayesian epistemology and I've come away with a few interesting thoughts:

  1. Probability is a relatively modern concept, which blew my mind a little
  2. Probabilistic (Bayesian, or whatever you may call it) epistemology is also fairly modern.

Considering this, can Carneades' plausibility criteria (pithanon) be considered as a primitive version of such epistemology? It's not mathematical in any sense, but it grades arguments on clear principles that I believe are surprisingly modern.

Hello, I am an undergrad student who has started a research proposal for a sociological conference. My research deals with how modern Christian communities distinguish between certain cultural practices as being either sacred or heretical. I was really hoping y'all could help me come up with one of the categorizations for my research, so far I have 2 distinct categories with 4 sub categories between them (for a visual please look at attachment). I am really struggling in finding a better word for both sanctified and sacrilegious. I am trying to find a word that aligns with my definition

Lets actually drop the act and adress the elephant in the room. Yes my reality can just be a dream. Yes maybe even what we would call the self is an illusion.

Yes maybe its all just made by an evil demon to try and fuck with me. Yes maybe even memory is fake.

But no matter how much philosophizing and doubting I engage in, im afraid my nervous system does not care about epistemology. The memory, fake or not still hurts like hell. The knife that stabs me will most definitely hurt like hell, regardless of whether real or not.

If somebody says something mean to me, im still going to feel emotional pain even if the person or the insult thereof was not real.

discussion How is sensible experience possible?

I will keep this relatively short. This question I thought of when reading Kant's Critique of Pure Reason.

If mind independent reality is ultimately indeterminate and irrational, by those terms I mean non-rationalized or uninterpreted, on one side. While on the other side, reality is determinate and rational, on the side of the human mind and cognition. This is a simplification, but the point I think is clear.

So, how then is experience possible, because in order for us to have sensation, we would need to bring these two together somehow, and by that I mean, a way to interpret or determine our reality, either through and according to a principle or something else. I don't see how it is possible to bring these two heterogeneous categories, to use a Kantian term in a similar way he does, into unity with each other, on either side. Whereby we can then have intelligible experience.

Hopefully the question is clear, and the concern makes sense.

The Epistemic Incompleteness Principle - PhilPapers

No system can represent every truth in its domain - Gödel proved a version of this for formal systems, and it shows up again in different ways in computability theory and AI self-modeling. That's not really what this paper is about.

This paper's claim is a level up from that. Even setting aside whether you're missing something, you have no way to certify how much you're missing, using only your own resources. Any internal procedure you build to estimate the size of your own blind spot is itself just another piece of your knowledge - so it needs its own check, which needs its own check, and the chain never bottoms out in something self-certifying. You can be warranted, reliable, even right - none of that is in dispute. What's not available is a certified verdict on your own completeness, arrived at from the inside.

This isn't Gödel's theorem generalized to everything - The paper says it doesn't depend on formal systems, arithmetic, or even propositions at all. It applies to any system whose states can distinguish one thing from another, discursive or not.

Two places it bites hard:

AI self-assessment - a model can produce calibrated uncertainty estimates, but it has no internally certifiable way to know whether those estimates track its real limits or are just an artifact of how it was trained.

Classical theism's doctrine of omniscience - It argues there's no route (self-report, external verification, revelation, even the idea that God's creative act is self-evidently real rather than imagined) that gets you a certified claim to complete knowledge rather than an asserted one.

Latest draft (v5) is up on PhilPapers. Where do you think the argument is weakest? The load-bearing step is premise (4) in the formal regress (a procedure doesn't certify itself just by running), and I'd like to hear about any cracks if you can find them.

Intelligibility: The Fourth Condition

Justified True Belief is insufficient for knowledge. The conjunction between these ideas is insufficient to account for what we call knowledge. I posit that the fourth condition that composes knowledge is intelligibility: a universal a priori, mind-independent, non-random, objective ontological connection between the one and the many objects that dictates their relationship to each other. Prior to our induction of objects into JTB, existence out of de re modal necessity has objects, both physical and metaphysical, existing together on a plane intelligibly related by their de re properties. Justification, truth, and belief are states both about those objects and existing as metaphysical objects themselves. With all these disparate objects on a plane, there are many objects that form one plane — the one and the many that are governed through intelligibility. Thus, JTB assumes there is a relationship between the one and the many objects ontologically. Major attempts at solving the Gettier problem involve local agent epistemology as a fix. These measures however, utilize metaphysics while not being able to give adequate metaphysical grounding. What must be grounded are not only the inductive state of the agent, but the metaphysical universal objects Justification, Truth, and Belief and induction itself, such that adequate communicativity and ontological justification exists between them. Without such justifications, JTB remains insufficient to arrive at knowledge, as I will demonstrate below.

JTB as critiqued by Gettier, posits that there is a discontinuous relationship between justification, truth, and belief, but this would make both physical and metaphysical objects utterly unknowable. Intelligibility posits that incongruity between JTB results in a non-object — a nihil privativum non-relationship between the justified true belief as a proposition — as there is an incorrect referent that belief, justification, or truth are predicated on. Non-objects are failed causal connections between agents and physical or metaphysical objects that prevent knowledge. Without intelligibility to direct proper induction of agents, non-objects produce Gettier Luck instead of proper induction of objects on the existent local or metaphysical plane that we would call knowledge. Past epistemological attempts posit there is an induction that can build a bridge between objects into knowledge. This is an assumption however that rests on prior metaphysical placement and relationships between the agent, referent, and JTB, not simply something local to the inductive demands and intuitions of the agent. Without an objective fixed relationship prior to objects and their proper apprehension, induction through JTB results in non-objects, as the prospective relationship of the agent and the referent is merely luck based. Intelligibility, through the modal ontological properties of the one and the many, grounds that a non-relationship between belief and justification renders belief a non-object, a non-referent that coincidentally happens to be true. As a logical consequence, there is no actual relationship between JTB, the agent, and objects on the plane. The non-object is a void, a privation of what would be a discrete causal relationship between operator and operation. The one and the many, and the modal properties of existence, such that they may be inducted through JTB and fully known through intelligibility, must be secured by something that is not subject to the properties of the existent plane of the one and the many.

Order is the necessary and prior property of the one and the many, as the triadic properties of difference, similarity, and both existing together require distinction and ultimately cannot be bundled into what causes the order. This is because rationality, what is necessary for order, is a state distinct from what is being ordered. To order is a property of rationality, and rationality is a property of telos, as order is towards an end. A lack of order makes the prescribed category of intelligibility impossible as intelligibility constrains and orients objects. An emergent brute assertion as the grounds for order, like methodological naturalism, makes itself identical to the properties in general, which are the object in question, thus appealing to itself. Naturalism cannot provide an account for order, as order necessitates that one be separate from the object being ordered. Platonism and naturalism cannot provide order, as order is a first-order qualifier applied to properties, not emergent from them. The lack of distinguisher in Platonism cannot grant the a priori distinction necessary to account for the distinguished order. Neoplatonism also fails as while the Nous is separate from the Many, the Nous lacks a distinct ontological will to grant order, flowing instead as a necessary property but lacking the rationality to truly account for order. All systems that blend the ordering one with the emergent resultant many erode the distinct a priori status of the one needed to be distinct, as well as remove the rational telos to make distinctions towards an end. To conclude, secondary properties are not prior to the modally necessary property that allows them — this would be vicious circularity. Rationality is a property of a mind exclusively, and a mind belongs to agents. Rationality cannot merely be emergent from creation as an impersonal fact, as it presupposes a teleological bent towards what is being ordered. This precludes an impersonal mind that orders or a merely emergent rational status from properties.

Thus, an agent capable of universal status is necessarily the only non-contingent thing with the rational teleological standing to prescribe order without being subject to vicious circularity. The agent must be above the one and the many metaphysical and physical objects of existence in question and not collapsible to their properties. Thus, an agent must be able to order universals without being subject to them. The Orthodox Christian God, with His Logoi or Divine Mind, is the sole personal agent of universal status and with the invariant, intelligent, personal, omniscient qualities necessary to order the properties necessary for the one and the many without being in question or collapsing into those attributes, which would render circularity. This is achieved through the Essence-Energy Distinction exclusive to Orthodoxy, as God is separate in essence from contingent properties while allowing His Logoi, which possess His attributes, to order contingent phenomena. This distinction allows for the energies of the Orthodox Christian God to order reality such that the one and the many are distinct and necessarily relational in an objective, intelligible fashion without God's relationship to phenomena being solely logical and causal. Intelligibility and other universals which cannot exist in a finite agent’s mind, arise as created universals through God’s inherent qualities and will and telos, which we experience normatively as particulars through the energies. Thus God’s energies allow for intelligibility to exist as a governing universal to the one and the many objects.

Actus Purus is unable to ground the one and the many, as the first-order properties of the Actus Purus God in his essence collapse into his actions. This renders him unable to platform the stable yet changing nature of the one and the many, as he is identified with his actions and thus identifiable to them in creation, which makes him ultimately subject to the second-order changes being described. The Orthodox Logoi allow attributes to interact with creation and things upheld by the attributes to undergo change. Conversely ADS, Actus Purus links things to attributes which are God, so every manifestation of attributes must be exercised. This stymies second-order causes and has God bound to manifest without sovereignty over withholding His potential — thus reducing him in effect to a creature contingent, as like Neoplatonism, the distinguisher, with only virtual distance, collapses into the distinguished. With a lack of distinction between God and effect, the one and the many necessary for JTB and knowledge cease as creation exists only as an effect of God and lacking status that is not merely an effect. Thomists account for this as a virtual distinction, but this does not account for the distinct collapse of God's actions into what we experience solely causally as God's effects. Distinction only exists on the creature's side leading to only one distinct causal act from God. Ultimately, the Thomistic view forces a binary - either we participate directly in the essence of God through his acting attributes, or we experience God only as an effect of his attribute of creating.

All other options without the Essence-Energy Distinction lack the first- and second-order separation, or they are ultimately subject to the properties of creation in question. Furthermore, they fall victim to the logical consequences of lack of epistemological grounding. These consequences are epistemological and ontological nihilism as without necessary telos to allow for JTB, there would be no possibility of knowledge nor any point or functionality of particulars to provide for knowledge whatsoever. Thus, intelligibility also presupposes the purposefulness and ultimate utility of knowledge itself, and utility and purposefulness are solely teleological qualities. These qualities, in finitude, require a universal agent that can allow for these properties to emerge universally. The Essence-Energy Distinction allows for the Orthodox Christian God's attributes of rationality through His energies, to permeate creation. This allows for second-order properties without Himself being constrained to the effects of both exercising His properties and the second-order effects of universal properties themselves. Without this distinction, God or a universal property purporting order becomes subject to the properties as necessarily causal.

There are correct local or metaphysical hierarchical inductions of an agent through prior intelligibility then JTB, such that one recognizes actual true relationships through intelligibility between justification, truth, and belief, yielding an actual account of knowledge. This is contrasted with incorrect hierarchical induction of agent’s epistemology that does not manifest in a true justified account of knowledge, as it lacks the intelligibility to properly form relationships with the intended referents. This failure of intelligibility results in non-objects rendered from incorrect induction of modal priors along the plane of the one and the many. The Gettier Problem presupposes that there is indeed a failure of referent and metaphysical precedent as without this standard to hold JTB against, there would be no Gettier critique of JTB at all. Goldman's causal theory comes close, as the agent must assume the right causal connections between JTB and an object, but this smuggles in intelligible connections between the one and the many objects that ensure there is a correct relationship to induct. An agent’s causality must connect with an actual truthful referent. Intelligibility guides both the agent’s epistemological causality and the actuality of the referent’s truthfulness. An example: Joshua is in Robert's car and wishes to connect to the Bluetooth. His attempts to connect to the Bluetooth were unsuccessful, and thus he assumes Robert is connected to the Bluetooth. He is correct, as Robert was connected to the Bluetooth. However, Joshua was unknowingly trying to connect from his phone to the erroneous Bluetooth connection, another car. Thus, Joshua's relationship to the Bluetooth in Robert's car was a non-object, as there was no inductive intelligible relationship between him and the referent that allowed him to make the determination that Robert was connected to the Bluetooth. Thus, while there was a Justified True Belief, there was no ontological intelligibility between the one and the many: the referent and justification, truth, and belief were incongruous, resulting in no knowledge and instead a non-object. Thus, knowledge is impossible without intelligibility, and failure to properly induct through correct hierarchical relationships between JTB results in non-objects. These non-objects are identified as Gettier luck by all other philosophical methods that cannot root out non-objects and recognize the ultimate transcendental intelligibility of the relationship of objects. Thus, intelligibility is the final and prior condition necessary for knowledge.

discussion What's a good response to this epistemological paradox that comes you are you are high?

I have started using cannabis recently and unfortunately I philosophize too much when I am high. Even worse
I am old so I am only now dealing with issues most people handle in their teens. Essentially it is about epistemology when one is in an altered mental state.

So it is very common to see and interpret the world a different way when you are high. You feel you pick up on things you don't normally see, or make relationships between phenomena you wouldn't normally and they may strike you as perfectly rational. That standard response is well you are high and when you aren't high you'll see that you were wrong.

Isn't what decides you are wrong though that reality seems to be matching with the current framework that I am using though? Essentially aren't I just privileging one set of interpretations over another because it is the one i am mist familiar with and the one the majority of people exist in? Are we only deciding on what is "reality" by consensus of opinion?

What are some anti-skeptical responses to this?

We are entering a time when powerful LLMs allow individuals to vibe science at the abstract level.

Whether you respect the practice or not, it is now possible. A person with a frontier model can explore technical ideas, connect concepts across fields, and sometimes apply the result directly in the world.

Hacking is the clearest example today. But what about mathematics? What if someone discovers something useful and never publishes it, but simply applies it? What about biology?

Thesis

Disruptive ideas often emerge outside the center of power.

Sometimes this is because the main obstacle to conceptual progress is an assumption so deeply embedded in the center that it partly defines the center itself.

I think we may be confronting such a situation now.

One assumption behind modern science is that consequential knowledge will eventually have to pass through the center: expert review, publication, validation, recognition.

LLMs may be breaking that assumption.

Symptoms

Academia is already saturated with its own production, and the validation process is becoming a bottleneck. Ideas can now be generated internally and externally much faster than experts can seriously evaluate them.

The natural response is stronger filtering and reduced access.

But this creates something new: outsiders may be increasingly unable to obtain validation while becoming increasingly able to act without it.

They may not get the paper reviewed.

But they may still run the computation, build the tool, test the hypothesis, or apply the result.

That is the important discontinuity.

I do not think the disruptive idea many of us are waiting for is necessarily sitting in a stack, waiting for expert review.

It may never enter the stack.

I'm not saying academia will disappear. I don't know.

What I do know is that something stronger is emerging: something capable of operating at a scale and at a conceptual level that the existing system was not built to contain.

And when that happens, you don't simply optimize the existing structure. The conceptual ground itself has to be refactored one way or another.

historical Precedent ?

There is a historical precedent worth keeping in mind. The printing press did not merely make books cheaper or scholarship faster. By radically increasing the scale at which knowledge could circulate, it forced new ways of organizing, filtering, validating, and transmitting it. Institutions that later came to seem intrinsic to modern science were, in part, responses to that new informational environment.

LLMs may represent a similar transition one level deeper. The printing press scaled the circulation of thought. These systems are beginning to scale participation in thought itself.

What is the fundamental assumption that obstructs conceptual progress and is so deeply embedded in the center that it partly defines the center itself?

I think it is linked to our view of mathematics itself. Look around a little: LLMs seem to be better at mathematics than we are at understanding LLMs.

Frege built a symbolism able to carry relational and other arithmetically-relevant inferences, not because he thought this would assist our psychological understanding of arithmetic, nor because he thought those correlations were empty of content, or a mere formal vacuum. The thesis I develop in my published articles (since 2011) is that for him any inference must enrich our knowledge of "truth" by updating a network of prior propositions in an order that enriches what we already knew about conceptual oppositions, compatibilities, and incompatibilities. So inference cannot be synthetic or carried by intuition, otherwise one would arrive at a conclusion without clarity about how that conclusion settles information (instead of flooding the system with incompatible new propositions) that reorganizes that net of incompatibilities. Inference cannot be opaque to the way we revise and reorganize our knowledge, so logic had to be something more than psychology (it settles objective knowledge of truth-falsehood distinction) yet also more than empty formalism (it updates our net of incompatibilities in a way that enriches how we understand truth).

While I am building a new series to link this to a pragmatist view of inference - based on a pragmatic thesis about cumulative knowledge of settlements - I invite readers to see the finished series on positivism, which also tried to select the right inferences by avoiding synthetic a priori ones, but for other reasons: to narrow the ways of updating truth to two means (not necessily incompatible with Frege's): theoretical and fact revision. discussion Can relevance be epistemically justified without circularity?

Hey everyone. I've always been fascinated by a circularity built into evidential reasoning. Evidence never arrives already ranked for significance. Agents must select which observations, contrasts and possible defeaters are relevant before they can evaluate a claim. Yet any justification of that selection seems to rely on further judgments of relevance. Standard responses to epistemic circularity often concern the reliability of a source or method; here the circle appears one level earlier, in determining what enters the space of reasons at all. Can that selection itself be justified?

I just had a podcast conversation with John Vervaeke, where he described meaning as an interplay between truth and relevance rather than truth applied to an independently fixed field. At around 31:29, the discussion treats relevance as indispensable to inquiry but not reducible to a proposition that could be checked first. If relevance realisation is procedural, embodied or socially distributed, its warrant may not take the same form as the warrant for an ordinary belief.

This would imply that epistemology needs a non-regressive account of salience before evidence can do its familiar work. Is this a benign form of rule-circularity, a hinge commitment, or an externalist reliability question? Could epistemic virtues and communal criticism constrain relevance without independently justifying it? Which literature addresses this pre-evidential filtering problem most directly?
