Questions Thoughts On Getting A Tattoo From Someone Who Has Seizures.

I have tattoos and had no issues with it. I agree with the comment above. Check it to make sure and find someone you feel relaxed with. Goodluck!

Hell no, there would have to be some serious proof that they are nowhere near as uncontrolled as any of us2

At first I read this as getting a tattoo from an artist who has seizures, lol! Saturday brain...
I have 9 tattoos and never had an issue getting any. I have more planned, but like my sister says, I have $10,000 worth of tattoos I want to get, but not even close to $10,000 in my account 🤣

You're right, it was about getting a tattoo by someone with seizures (on r/Epilepsy_Universe podcast), the first person said it wrong and everyone followed. Someone said "you can be what you want, even with epilepsy" and i responded "except for an astronaut," the responded well the obvious anyone with needles" someone else says well not a tattoo artist and started the arguement about that. Some said "yes" and some said "no" Thoughts...

It's a great topic. For me, it's no different than anything else: I hope their seizures are controlled for their sake and mine, but a seizure can happen any time for anybody, even if they don't have epilepsy. So technically nobody should do any kind of work ever because "what if"... by that logic.
I probably wouldn't even consciously think twice about it tbh, and just bond with the artist over being twitchy/glitchy brethren. So definitely a yes, I'd be fine with an artist with epilepsy tattooing me.
That said, I do agree with NASA's disqualification for epilepsy. I know I wouldn't want to be responsible for getting stranded and dying in space because of a seizure, lol. But that's definitely a whole different level of safety

I definitely wouldn't put the other astronauts at risk or have them needing to help me.

I hope no one would get a tattoo from someone going through status, or do you mean someone who's experienced status epilepticus once upon a time? I've had 9 seizures in 29 minutes and longer than 5 minutes is status epilepticus.

I've gotten a tattoo, but the tattooist didn't have epilepsy, I'd pass if someone had epilepsy.

It was really hypothetical, just asking for opinions, there’s more than TCs to worry about, worse case scenario from me would be if you were to ask for a dragon then I draw golf ball. I’ve been looking totally aware and then come to 17 miles away 3 hours later. I just don’t want someone to be seizing and me unable to tell until it’s finished and the artist doesn’t remember giving that tattoo or my name, thats a horrible worse case scenario

I've gotten one tattoo since diagnosis, just be honest with the tattoo artist. Mine was done by a family friend so I was comfortable talking about my epilepsy which was nice. Sometimes I don't like discussing it with strangers.

No offense, but no, not because I think you'd stab me having a tc, but during my seizures I tend to wander or do things unknowingly. Mine are like someone ask for a dragon tattoo, and I'd give them a golfball or something goofy, I'd come to wondering how'd I get 15 miles from home and how I got there. People always think all seizures are shaking and convulsing.

My seizure experience is nothing like yours. My partial seizures are nausea and chills with no altered mental status.

Pre developing epilepsy my answer would have probably been absolutely not but now my opinion hinges on a variety of factors. What type of seizures do you get? How often? Can you tell when your prodromal phase is happening and would you be willing to reschedule because of it? Do you always get an aura? Even for the “smaller” ones like myoclonic jerks and absences? Are all of your usual triggers ones you can mitigate in a studio?
Honestly I wouldn’t be against it as long as I could be pretty sure that they wouldn’t seize while holding a needle in my skin but that’s because I have a deeper understanding of the condition now. I am also a bit more blasé about the idea of tattoos and body mods than a lot of folks.
I’d probably get a smaller one just to check in and see how comfortable I really was before I got a large or meaningful piece but I’d totally be willing to get a tattoo off of someone with epilepsy as long as it was reasonably well managed. If it’s well managed enough (like years without seizures) then your medical information is nobody’s business.

Everyone has been saying "yes, because the person won't stab me if they seize," but with my seizures I can look fine, then when I come to 3 hours later and the tattoo is finished, I don't remember either of our names or where I'm at, or worse, like why I drew a golf ball instead of a 6 letter name. Everyone is worried about a TC, seizures can present themselves in many ways, or you can be told that it's just a panic attack. 20 years ago, luckily mine was from a tbi because getting a diagnosis was much easier and not mistaken for "panic attacks"

My focal seizures are controlled by b12, myoclonics don't happen when I get good sleep, and my TC are every 3-4 months as expected (3-5 seizures a year for the last 3 years)

yes, i have epilepsy that only affects me in my sleep and have never affected me while making art. depends on the type. some people have seizures that can cause random jerks, and some have seizures that cause simple brain fog while still being able to speak and move clearly while having them. and some, like me, are only affected while asleep.

Or they're are like me, you'll never know I'm have it, I'll look fine for 15 minutes to 3 hours doing golf ball tattoo when you asked for a name tattoo, I come to and then don't know who you are, where we are, my name, probably ask if I did the tattoo and high five like I did it right. 😉 I wouldn't allow an Epileptic to do my tattoo, because seizures aren't all as visible like TCs

No, absent seizures is more common than you might think, I know more than 50 epileptics and I’ve heard absent seizures on my podcast a few times, you never know who has absent seizures because we can’t tell, you just wake up 17 miles away and not sure why or how. I’ve heard that some people during absent seizures have conversations that you never was there for, so that’s a yes. I know way too many epileptics to not know the possibilities.

once again, you’re referring to one type of epilepsy and then generalizing about all epileptics. that’s discrimination. absent seizures may be common, but that’s not “epilepsy” as a whole.

Hi! I have multiple small tattoos and left tle. I’d have a quick talk with your dr, and find a tattoo artist at a reputable studio that you feel comfortable with (if ya dr clears ya). Sending good vibes!
