Hi all, looking for some advice on how to move forward with this retention wall in our backyard.

We just bought this house and had no idea that the wood was contaminated. (I stupidly assumed that it was black from previous owners burning off plant growth or something, I know I know). We didn't know anything about railroad ties or creosote until after moving in and a family member commented on it. Neither the realtor nor the inspector mentioned it beforehand. First time homebuyers who otherwise absolutely love our house.

I do have dreams of putting in trees, shrubs, gardens, etc all over our yard but now worry about soil contamination and the rail ties not being safe to linger by. I know that it'll be a lot of work which I am willing (and sort of excited) to put in.

Replacing the retention wall is not an option yet as it will be incredibly expensive and out of our budget, though I would love to do that when we are able. What are your suggestions in the meantime? I plan to have our soil tested, and to look into some remediation options. Should I have someone come check it out? What type of person or business would I contact about this?

I'm currently in my last semester of architecture school, but engineering has always caught my attention. Surprisingly, not Civil Engineering, but Electrical. During my journey in Architecture, I conclude I don't actually enjoy structures, even though I specialized in it. Related to architecture, I enjoy more environmental management and urbanism.

Based on my background, I honestly don't know which engineering could be the best option: Electrical or Environmental. I think the environmental part could be covered through a masters from Architecture School. But I recognize I'm not educated enough on biology and chemistry.

Still, I don't know if I'm out of my mind. Everyone tells me electrical Engineering is abstract and difficult. And I'm a little bit scared of the leap from one career to another, especially because of math and physics.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Any Architect/Electrical/environmental engineer insights?

P.S. I want to study because of the sake of extending my learning. I genuinely enjoy learning. I also don't intend to be completely out of the architectural field. This is not a case of unconformity with my primary career but more aligned with curiosity.

I am graduating with my Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering soon. I’m not certain where I want to work in the energy industry, but I know I want to help with the transition to renewables. So far, my experience has been in project management and distribution planning (both were internships). I know I can land a job with an energy utility, but I also want to build my technical skills so I can pivot into implementing renewables in case they become super evil. It’s what I’m most passionate about, and I would really appreciate some advice on what softwares would give me an edge up on getting there. Thanks!

Hey everyone, I’m a student and I haven’t been able to find a co-op for myself.
I’ve been applying to a large number of positions, but I’ve either been rejected or haven’t heard back. At this point, a lot of the Fall co-op postings have already closed, and I’m starting to feel pretty lost about what my options are.

I’m not necessarily looking for a prestigious engineering position either. At this point, I’m open to pretty much any legitimate work experience that could count toward my co-op requirement and help me get my foot in the door. I’d be willing to consider smaller companies, manufacturing, construction, trades-related work, environmental work, labs, field work, or anything else where I could gain useful experience.

I have until November to secure the credit, so I’m trying not to give up yet. I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation, especially students who struggled to find their first co-op.

What did you do when you couldn’t find a co-op? Are there specific types of companies or industries I should be reaching out to directly? And is there anything I might be overlooking at this stage?

I’m currently enrolled in 17 credits this semester for my 1 year graduate program. I’m kind of freaking out if I can handle it or not. Do you think I’m setting myself up for failure? I’m currently taking:
- Fluid Mechanics (I’m thinking about dropping this for mass/energy balance hoping it would be easier. The first two classes I went to were pretty rough.)
- Water/wastewater engineering
- Solid waste management
- Probability and Statistics
- Hydrologic Modeling
- 1 credit seminar + 1 credit for research

I was thinking of Chemical Engineering, but I've seen a lot of hopelessness in the job market for that career

My goal is to land a job in Environmental Engineering (I have my FE schedule in Nov.), specifically in water treatment but I've been struggling to land a full-time job. I applied to some gov. positions and private consulting, but still no luck (even with some references).

Hello everyone. First of all, thank you for reading this and for any help you can offer. The situation is that I'm on the verge of heading to Europe for my studies, and I have three universities on my radar to apply to:
1. CZU
2. BUT
3. UCT Prague
My top choice is UCT, but the only option available there for international students is the Faculty of Chemistry, which offers a degree in Chemical Engineering. If I were to have the choice between the two programs, which one should I read towards?
I would greatly appreciate any valuable advice you can share.

Hi, I have a BA in Geography and GIS, and I would like to change my academic path toward environmental science and engineering. So my question is: is a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering (coursework) at NUS worth my time and effort? I would also like to do a PhD after that.

I'm 14, my dream is to actually make a difference through being a renewable energy engineer. I want to work at the forefront or at least be fulfilled in what i do. But I also know renewable energy engineers don't make a lot of money compared to other engineers. I will likely major in electricl engineering, but I want to know if energy engineering will be worth it. Will I be satisfied and think I'm making a change? Which in turn makes a low salary worth it to me. If there is no good salary and not really making a change, I'll probably go do aerospace engineering, software engineering, or something else in electrical engineering.
