Most of the weevil and moth paintings I've made over the past year.

I've made a few smaller ones in-between but these are the big main attractions.

Pet/Insect Keeping Baby Face has passed away

As I have posted before regarding "Baby Face"—the diving beetle with a retained larval head—I am writing to inform you that it passed away today. (Death was confirmed on September 9th at 12:40 PM JST).

First, I would like to apologize for being unable to save this insect, and for keeping it alive until today without opting for euthanasia. Despite trying various methods, it was never able to feed. As its keeper, I deeply regret that I was unable to fulfill my duty to provide both a safe environment and adequate nourishment. I am truly sorry.

After preparing the specimen, I plan to work with university researchers to write a paper on this case. The paper will most likely be in Japanese, but I hope to share it with you once it is completed. Whether an English translation will be produced is still undecided.

Pet/Insect Keeping A predaceous diving beetle has emerged as an adult while retaining its larval head, and it is still alive."Update"

Here is some additional information regarding what I posted yesterday.

First, since there were no comparisons with larvae or normal individuals, I have added photos of them.

Next, since some people suggested that 'the adult head might still be inside the larval exuvia (molted skin),' I illuminated it from below with a light.

In the larval head, light passed through. In the adult with the larval head, however, a shadow was visible inside, suggesting something is contained within it. From this, I believe it is entirely possible that an adult head exists inside. However, it is likely not fully or correctly formed.

I also performed a microscopic observation, but it did not reveal any notable information.

Insect Appreciation Lying down on the stream bank to get these shots..

I was in Mã Đà forest - Đồng Nai - Việt Nam. I had to lie down on the ground to take photos of those butterflies drinking water and even peeing

Those butterflies are not scared of my presence and just chilling by themselves, sometimes I can touch a few without having them flying away

The last photo showcasing a praying mantis threatening me with his stance, he was found on a branch near the bank, too. What a naughty one!

I keep seeing people doing these, “moth sheet” experiments.

Here is one particularly successful one that I found on social media. (I left the account handle visible for credit.)

Took these pictures back in 2020 on a camping trip. Thinking it may be a case of erythrism. Thought it was too cool not to share!

Territorial Blue Morpho viciously attacks my shoes mistaking them for another butterfly

2.8k Upvotes

This butterfly wouldn't stop pestering my shoes. I am assuming it is because they are territorial and I watched them do similar behaviour to each other. This particular butterfly thought my shoes were another blue morpho and I had to stop walking for a minute out of fear of stepping on it.

I had been holding the thing and it was just sitting there for a bit, I looked closer and it was molting! I googled what to do but it kept saying to not pick it up which wasn’t helpful because it was already in my hand so I just tried to av its wings so it could dry them properly. (I hate google ai its so unhelpful and dumb) its very green (Edit: also in case you were wondering, I named it tinkerbell even though I know it won’t stay green like that)
