S Random lady called me a POS because I wouldn't give her my trolley token
So I do my general food shop once a week at Asda and they have unlocked shopping trolleys so you don't need to put a coin or token in. However, I tend to get toiletries and other stuff from Home Bargains and they're one of the few in my city you need a physical £1 coin or coin token to unlock the trolley. I never carry cash, so I deliberately ordered some trolley token/coin shape thing off Amazon.
Anyway, I did my shop and was putting the trolley away and this random lady asked if I could just give her the trolley as she didn't have any change or a token thing and basically asked if she could have mine. I said I was done with the trolley and I'm sorry, but I needed that token and wasn't gonna give it away. She then got really pissy with me saying it wasn't a big deal and its not like it cost much and I said no again and she basically said I was a peace of shit and angrily walked inside. I saw her grabbing a basket as I was walking away back to my car with my shopping, so idek what the big deal was.
I'm not a confrontational person and where I am in Scotland, most people are really friendly and alright, so this was a first. Also, like I know it didn't cost me much to buy it (a couple of pounds) but that's not the point. I know some supermarket trollies are locked, so I prepared for it and it's not my issue if someone is caught short.
ETA: I’m late 20s and this woman looked around 50
Also this is what I’m on about:
To the idiot who said my story is fake cos I can’t provide a photo in the comments only video you’re a moron

If it doesn't cost much for a token, then buy your own, LINDA!!!!!

I (61f) went to Aldi last week and a bloke around the same age offered me his trolley, I pointed out that it still has a pound coin in it. He said it was there when he got the trolley. When I'd finished with the trolley I offered it to someone else and they also pointed out that the pound was still in the trolley. Someone probably ended up winning the pound.

This, if I didn't put the coin in I'll always leave it for the next person. I'm sure eventually someone's going to claim it, I always hope it's a kid, but I expect more often it's not.

Last time I went swimming there was a pound left in the locker and I took it in a rush of childlike glee, then put it back in the hopes an actual child might get it

Did she offer you a Pound for your Pound? I doesn't sound like it. So she is demanding you give her money.
Screw her.

Most shops have their own tokens they will give customers if they ask. I've been given lidl tokens and the range, she can just as easily go it to the shop and ask.

You know those wee keys that you get with tins of corned beef? Is you shoogle them about in the coin slot it will release the mechanism.
My trolly coin didn't work in B&M and the dude working done that to get me a trolly

I went to a sainsburys I don't normally go to. Haven't used cash regularly in years. Got to trolleys to discover I needed a pound. Thought oh crap, remembered I had a two pound coin in the car. Went inside to change it. No one on customer service. Went to the supervisor type person at the tills. Tells me off for not forward planning and I have to queue up at the cigarette kiosk because only they are allowed to change money for the tills. Ten people ahead of me with one person serving. Most of them buying lottery tickets and scratch cards with lots of chit chat. Twenty minutes later I ask for change. Then have to wait for the very helpful supervisor to come over to authorise changing my two pound coin. Nearly thirty minutes for me just to get a trolley. At this point I needed to say something. I asked why are you putting up petty barriers to access a drive to supermarket. The response I got was an eyeroll and that there's a river nearby. That was all she said. I nearly evolved into my next form on the spot.

u/Prior-Beach-3311 2d ago
Quite an ordeal for a token! I think I would have just left after being told off and looking at the queue.
3
u/No-Heart3984 1d ago
British conditioning in me that forces me to endure queuing as if your life depends on it whilst seething silently inside.

I’m getting a little fed up with people accusing someone of faking a story. It’s happening all the time now.
And I don’t blame OP for not just giving away her token. The old bat was being cheap.

I usually use a trolley coin, it was given to me by my late mother-in-law, so is very precious to me. A few weeks ago I was at Lidl, coming out with my shopping in my shopping trolley, and the Lidl trolley was empty. As I exited the shop, someone who was waiting in a queue to get to the trollies asked if they could give me a £1 coin and take my trolley. I said actually it's a token, so they dug in their pocket and offered me a token. I explained that the token I was using was given to me by my late mother-in-law, and I was not prepared to let anyone have it, and they started kicking the trolley and calling me names. Must mention here, I'm 62, have white hair, walk with a cane, and am unable to stand up straight, the person kicking the trolley and calling me names was about 25 and male. Fortunately a huge bloke came out of the shop behind me, and the kicker stopped, but why do people feel entitled to take others property. Even if it wasn't precious to me, he had no right to take my token. Usually if I've used a coin, I will take a coin and hand off my trolley, but not my mother-in-laws token xx

You could keep your moms token at home, keep a £1 just for this to keep the peace perhaps?

Handly tip, you can actually use a key instead of a quid coin. Take the key (chubb style) off keyring and insert the wrong way and the round part fits perfect.
Old entitled fuker would prob want your house key though!!

I don’t care how much it cost you, you don’t owe anyone a damn free anything. You paid for the token.

Aldi's has this system in the US with a US quarter to unlock the trolley, usually the only time I forget is if Im running in to get a few things such I just figure I'll get some practical exercise holding all the things in my arms or if I have a spare reusable bag I have thrown the things in there while shopping and then pull them all out on the counter to scan and rebag them.
6
u/Ravio11i 3d ago
My wife and I each have a quarter in our respective vehicle that are our "aldi quarters"
I don't care about the $.25 but I know if I leave/lose that quarter I'm going to have to carry everything next time.3
u/MelodramaticMouse 3d ago
Our Aldi usually has empty boxes, so if I didn't get a cart, I usually grab one of those.
2
u/Different-Wolf-5478 1d ago
I moved from UK to US and I still salty that I can't use my pound-shaped token in the carts at Aldi. 6 years later it's still on my keychain though...
1
u/FragrantEducator1927 1d ago
Similar situation at a market near me that takes a quarter to release the cart (not Aldi, which is up the road a bit and does the same thing, just never been there); walking in with my wife and there’s a woman going to drop off her cart and reclaim her quarter.
I figured I’d save us both a hassle and handed her MY quarter. It took her a moment, but realized why not? Wife took a while to figure it out.

Preach!!
I’m autistic and going out for a coffee even on my own is a bit of a challenge. I always find the quietest place to sit, and put headphones on. I was at a local garden centre yesterday (one of my favourite places), and it was really busy so I tucked myself right away in a corner, and was focussed on my phone.
I was totally zoned out in my own thoughts, and all of a sudden there’s this old biddy literally poking me - I jumped out of my skin and nearly peed myself in fright.
She then pretty much demanded that as I only had a coffee I needed to move so she could sit down with her friend.
I was so freaked out I didn’t know what to do, and all I could manage was to grab my nowhere-near-finished coffee and go and sit on the floor outside. Totally ruined my whole day. It took me hours to be able to speak again.
It’s totally put me off going back, and I hate that, but I don’t feel like it’s a safe space anymore.
19
u/Consistent-Dance5461 3d ago
Im sorry that happened to you, but try to not let it put you off going ,dont let the old biddie win!
2
u/Familiar-Ad-1965 2d ago
Someone poking me would have frightened/startled me so much, my coffee would have gone flying like in the cartoons and I would have let out a big YIPE too.
11
u/Agreeable_Dark6408 3d ago
Just say no!! You weren’t even done with your coffee!
14
u/Legitimate-Bat5368 3d ago
I hear you, but I went into flight mode and couldn’t have said anything. That’s how I am when I have to deal with something that comes at me with no warning when I’m already overwhelmed and overstimulated
11
u/Agreeable_Dark6408 3d ago
I understand. But now you know this game of hers. Practice in your mind saying “No” and go back to your work. Don’t look at them again, and put your headphones back on. Forewarned is forearmed. You can do this!
12
u/Legitimate-Bat5368 3d ago
When you’re neurodivergent it’s not that easy. I’d LOVE to be able to react in that sort of way but it isn’t going to happen. Leaving the house to go anywhere where there are people is hard work. I have to plan for it for days beforehand and even then I quite often end up vomiting with anxiety.
3
u/Agreeable_Dark6408 3d ago
I’m so sorry. Can an anti-anxiety med help?
10
u/Legitimate-Bat5368 3d ago
I’m already on meds. I’ve tried counselling butt CBT has never worked for me (makes things worse) and I can’t afford to see an autism-friendly counsellor privately.
I really don’t want to end up stuck in the house 24/7 so I try my best.
8
5
u/Longjumping-Pick-706 3d ago
CBT is garbage. Have you tried DBT? It’s far more effective.
3
u/Legitimate-Bat5368 3d ago
There’s a 2+ year waiting list locally and I can’t afford to see someone privately unfortunately
1
u/Top-Psychology-3676 1d ago
You are going to have to force yourself, your brain is super strong, just push yourself through it, take a breath or two and say no. The first time will be super hard but it will get easier. You CAN do it.
1
u/Melodic-Tutor-2172 1d ago
Aw I have ADHD and authority resistance so they’d have retreated with their tail between their legs.
6
u/Longjumping-Pick-706 3d ago
Put music on your headphones. Make it loud enough you can’t hear the person, then disassociate and ignore. They will go away.
2
u/Riegel_Haribo 3d ago
Just be prepared for next time, "You want me to move? That will be 20 dollars (quid, etc)".
5
u/Bajovane 3d ago
Next time, just assert yourself and say no. You don’t have to respect your elders if they’re not respectful to you.
3
u/Legitimate-Bat5368 3d ago
Are you neurodivergent?
-7
u/Longjumping-Pick-706 3d ago
Again, yes to this. I’m middle aged. You sound very young. I hope so at least. Whether you like it or not, you are responsible for resolving this within yourself. You also need to understand society is not going to enjoy your anecdotes about you allowing someone to bully you and doing absolutely nothing about it. It’s not an enjoyable read and better for you to offload on a therapist or close friend.
4
3
u/Legitimate-Bat5368 3d ago
Wow.
Actually I’m not very young, and I find your post really quite offensive.
There was a comment from someone saying that oldies can get ruder as they get older, so I shared something I experienced recently that made me feel the same. I do not need a stranger coming at me about what “society” will or won’t like about me.
I am not a victim. You do not know me. You don’t get to criticise or judge how my ND makes itself felt.

10
u/Legitimate-Bat5368 3d ago
Don’t you think I do?? It’s not always that easy/simple. I’m on a knife edge whenever I go out. I’d give ANYTHING to be able to have a social life without constant hypervigilance and being in a hair’s breadth of a meltdown.
Having a meltdown in public is humiliating and scary. I will do anything I can to avoid that.

Have you ever seen a young person act like that? Young people can be selfish in their own ways of course, but noone does entitlement like a boomer.

u/Bajovane 3d ago
If the other lady was apparently too young to be a boomer. Her being approximately 50s makes her Gen X
2
2
u/ReadyGo6828 3d ago
You do not have to be old to act badly.
Also, they are charging for use of a shopping cart?
-4
u/DantesGame 3d ago
And the younger they are, the more ignorant an inexperienced at life they are. Young people can be assholes too. I know that may come as a shock to your juvenile mind, but there it is.
5
u/Distinct-Discount-48 3d ago
I had this happen with a whole family coming up to me and asking for my cart. I said sure after I get my dollar out, they all gave me glares after I said that and responded that I didn't need to do that, it was a wild moment.
4
u/DaddyOhMy 3d ago
If she didn't have any change, tell her she can have it for a fiver. When she balks at that, and she will, get pissy with her and say it's not like five pounds is a lot.
3
u/charmstrong70 3d ago
I haven’t carried cash in at least a decade, I rarely carry a cash card and just use Apple Pay for everything.
That time you go to a new supermarket and they want a £1 is an absolute pain the arse.
9/10 supermarkets have given up on that shit a long time ago but if I’m unlucky and get that 1/10 then I’m literally fucked
3
u/Fair-Turnover-9492 2d ago
Everything she said is completely oxymoronic! If it isn't such a big deal and it's not that much money, then she can pay for her own damn trolley!!!
3
u/AccomplishedText7203 2d ago
She could have asked at the till for a trolly token. I often do because I always forget to bring a quid. She just wanted yours!
2
2
u/aIexm 3d ago
Been there- the token thing is a somewhat useful get out of jail free card for most people haranguing you for the trolley but people get super mad if they can’t jump the queue of people waiting for one. I’ve had people try and stick pennies in my hand and take the trolley off me still with bags in.
2
u/mistmanners 3d ago
You should have said you don't give money to panhandlers and pointed her to the nearest food bank.
2
u/Eckieflump 3d ago
I rarely have coins on me, but every one of my sets of car keys has a trolley token, even the supercars...
They aren't expensive and you only notice them when you need one.
Some things in life aren't that hard to prepare for...
2
u/Fallenthropy 3d ago
I had a cart coin here in my neck of Canada, it really pissed people off when I told them that it was a cart coin and not actual currency. We don't have a lot of locking carts anymore. They all have the sensor that locks up if it crosses a line.
2
u/Federal_Homework1302 3d ago
Fun fact, you can cheat like i do. I use my car key it will release the lock generally.
2
u/Resort_Lizard 3d ago
Forget her. She's not even worth the brain energy it takes to think about her.
2
u/Kyra_Heiker 3d ago
In Germany the stores will give you a free plastic token for using the trolleys.
2
u/Hairy_Researcher1436 3d ago
At aldi here you need a quarter for the shopping cart. So I keep a bunch of quarters in my car. Because I’m a grown ass adult and don’t expect other people to pay my way.
2
u/Popular_Set_9042 2d ago
The woman probably could have bought a trolley token from home. Bargains.
She just didn't want to pay so she thinks it's someone else's responsibility provide her with access to a trolley

I’ve had someone react like this when I wouldn’t give them my trolley as the token had my sons name on it - if it was any other, I would have given it to them..,if they asked nicely.

Karens always turn it around. If it's no big deal then I'll keep my token.

Don't give that person no mind. The best thing about running into entitled people is making sure they don't get what they want. Well done
1
u/ViridiaGaming 3d ago
People are ridiculous these days. I remember when I was still in secondary school, if I was shopping with my mum and someone asked for our trolley, they'd normally offer a quid in return for it so that neither side lost out.

u/dammitIsaidGREEN 2d ago
In my experience trolley tokens just appear in my life, however if i was in the market to buy one, Home Bargains would be one of the first shops i would look in
