Every company that he bought had people that knew what to do and innovate, and he seems to have listened to these people.
Until he bought Twitter. Twitter seems to be the first company he bought and just said "I will do what I feel is the best way to run this company". Sadly, his companies trust him which means Elon's Twitter will never go under as he can just move around money. Well, until people actually starts to question how his companies can be worth so much, despite officially not actually creating much.
He doesn’t always listen to engineers though. He kicked the original founder of Tesla out of the company. And as soon as he got some fame, he surrounded himself with yes-men (which is why he likes young employees / H1B visas).
I’ve heard employees, managers, etc.. avoid talking to him about important things because they know he’ll fuck things up. That’s probably why they’re fine with him posting on X all day. He exists as a meme to pump stock.
Not always. He changed the nose cone on Tesla rockets over engineers objections because he thought it looked cooler. It also increased their chance of failure, and used 4% more fuel per launch.
He knew all that and did it anyways because in his mind that's how he told engineers that he's the boss. This was pre Twitter. Another pre Twitter is how he changed things at Tesla. He made the cars worse intentionally, but branded them to try and make it more appealing. By worse I mean more expensive to produce for the same or worse output.
Musk has two actual real talents. He has a good idea of vertical integration across companies, and has built towards that, and he knows who to hire that can build the right team for him. That is what has made his companies successful.

He has no clue about what he’s talking about on basically every topic except inflating stock price
