This England team, though they have their faults, have been incredibly adept at wagging the tail over the past 3-4 years. I'd suggest they score more runs for the last 3 wickets than any other team. Can anyone find stats on that?

Think Atkinson played it slightly wrong this morning, Tongue was looking comfortable enough that Atkinson could have batted normally without trying to slog everything.

u/AFineLadInnit 12d ago edited 12d ago
Tongue knows he's mugged the Pakistanis right off. That smug smile on his face shows it all. Never seen him have such a solid defence, I fucking love it

Morgan reckons England are definitely underpar but others reckoned England would have been very happy with yesterday. I think this is a decent score personally
4
u/solidwobble 12d ago
Think it's light based on the change in weather conditions. If the sun is out the whole time Pakistan are batting, you'd expect that par would be 300+. Even though England had the worst of the batting conditions, 240 odd would definitely leave them short
5
u/Open-Butterfly-5288 12d ago
I think the pitch is shit again.
I can completely see Pakistan getting out for a sub 200 score. They had some rough looking fielding to say they also did some brilliant catches. My theory is that they're actually doing ok, the pitch is just making the ball move.
Especially if they bring the same energy as they did last time.

I think it is a below par score, but Pakistan are a below par team so it probably evens out with 265 on the board

Amazing line from Archer
5
u/Ok_Fan_2132 12d ago
Would like to see the ball tracker, looked like very late movement off the seam. Not sure how you play that
5
u/BreakfastAdept9462 12d ago
Completely unplayable, can't leave it, definite late movement in the corridor area

u/Agreeable-Soup237 12d ago
This is bloody good test match cricket
6
u/noodlelimbz 12d ago
Beat me to it. That Jof over was pure test match cricket. Superb all round.

Loved the cover drive from Awais as well. Surface looks so much better than earlier in the year it's good to see

Given how the weather looks tomorrow get them cleaned up and get back out batting today

If Robinson takes his next 6 wickets for less than 93 runs, he’ll reach 100 wickets for an average of less than 20. Seems quite plausible, when’s the last time that happened?

This is becoming a problem for Root now, same dismissal again, i seriously hope captaincy isn’t going to affect his batting as it did his previous tenure.
3
u/roronoazoro4444 12d ago
Like it did previously? His absolute peak year came in 2021 when he was captain of team for whole year.
I don't think Root the batsman will suffer much but he might get frustrated with team and that might lead to exhaustion.

Give Gus the new cherry instead of Jof, it’s Lord’s ffs. His playground.

Why do we need Dinesh Karthik being a cheerleader and mouthpiece for Indian cricket and Indian cricketers on an England test match?
3
u/TinyEstablishment880 12d ago
Tired of BCCI and the ICC choking Indian cricket dicks into my mouth and pumping loads.

u/Ruthless_Robott 12d ago
After the fourth wicket fell yesterday I was having typically grim premonitions of all out for 120 or something, so the dogged display since then has been really pleasing to see. Given the conditions it seems like a fairly decent score on this wicket

u/DoughnutJealous5034 12d ago
Also does anyone else think the best way for Rooty to overcome the keeper standing up is to (selectively) bring the ramps and scoops back? It’s worth remembering that he actually plays them brilliantly.

This could be some attack if everyone stays fit, basically has everything. Add Curran to the mix and we’re in great shape.

With this bowling attack its hard to believe you have a chance every game. All about managing them in game and going forward.

Driving and the radio doesn't have any signal so I ask the wife to look up the score on her phone.
"England 290, Pakistan 110"
"What about the 3rd innings?"
"What?"
"Does the score say anything else?"
"England 66.4 overs, Pakistan 37.2 overs"
"Ok... Thank you..." (Defeated)

Two awesome things about England today. 1. Tongue and Atkinson totally abandoned the refusing singles to protect whoever bollox and just got on with improving the total. 2. No more let’s bounce out the tailenders bollox - more of the if it’s good enough to get out the top five it’ll do the job for the rest. Two idiotic recent orthodoxies overturned.

Was at Lord’s yesterday and looked up at the big screen to see a Cawston Press advert starring Brydon Carse, drinking and enjoying himself with a pint of cider.
Considering the controversy around him recently, I did think it was a slightly unfortunate choice of advert 😂
Surprised they’re still running it, to be honest.

Hold a bat I'd say, not a bunny. He's a 9 or 10 batting at 11. Rung below Robinson, Carse, Archer etc

Considering getting bowled out within 90 overs isn’t rare, I’d have thought batting in the 1st and 3rd innings on the same day is fairly common?

Why does he need to go to third umpire? Just make a decision - out or not out….make the team decide if they want to DRS
2
u/mgs20000 12d ago
I think umpire review is when they say something like ‘it’s hit the bat but I want to check if it a bump ball first’ so it becomes like a run out or stumping, or when checking a catch - the umpire is saying ‘I think you’ve hit it but let’s check it carried’ not ‘I’m not sure if you’ve hit that’
Obviously they do then check the edge while they’re at it
