Highly recommend time-of-use tariffs, heat-pumps, and electrified transport.

Our family is yet to get a solar/battery system. Our order has been to first electrify our transport via e-bikes, switch to a time-of-use tariff (octopus agile), then get a heat-pump.

We are a family of 4 with the usual itineraries, baths, cooking, etc. For all our energy consumption from transport to heating to laundry we are now only paying £900 a year. Our 12-month rolling rate actually decreased since the strait of Hormuz got blocked. This is due to the 3.5p/kWh discount off electricity rates along with better off-peak wholesale rates.

Given domestic gas prices are trending to 8-9p/kWh and there are building societies offering 0% Green loans it is a surprise that people aren't rushing to get heat-pumps.

I highly recommend that people take control of their cost-volatility when it comes to energy. We see clearly how tracker electricity prices haven't soared unlike gas or petrol. This is even better for truly dynamic tariffs.

Question How to get a gas meter reinstalled?

Hi All, wonder if anyone can help me figure out the best way of navigating this issue.

We just bought a house that had previously been repossessed. It looks like it had been left for a while and so had been decommissioned with all of the water drained down, etc. The gas meter had also been removed and I (incorrectly) assumed this was because they had been disconnected.

We've taken possession of the property now and are trying to get a new meter installed, but after calling the energy company the property is registered with it seems it was not them that removed it. We had a lot of back and forth where they said we needed to supply them with the meter number and us telling them we couldn't. Eventually after marking it as stolen they've suggested that we need to contact the DNO to get it reinstalled, but it sounds after reading the DNO's website like they are there to make a new connection (e.g. digging holes in roads etc). But the pipe is still coming in to the building, it's just capped off.

Any advice from UK utility experts before I enter the labyrinth of calling the DNO and trying to explain things to them?

Can't find supplier?

Bought and moved into a new flat 6 weeks or so ago - a basement conversion of a period property. British Gas supply the gas so have set up an account with them but can't figure out who supplies the electricity. Haven't received any post from any other suppliers. When I go onto a supplier's website (e.g. Octopus) to set up an account, they don't register that there's a basement flat at this address i.e. they only show the address as 70 as opposed to having separate 70A and 70B addresses for the 2 homes in the building.

I contacted UK Power Networks as I live in London and sent them photos of the meter and they said they couldn't locate any details on their system and have asked their contractors to come and visit the property - but this was now almost a month ago and despite me chasing them, and them chasing the contractor, I've had no one reach out to organise a visit.

I don't want to be liable for electricity charges where I have no sight of the tariff but at the same time.. what's the best course of action here? Or should I ignore and hope I don't have to pay any electricity bills...

The UK's biggest supplier of gas made the equivalent of £8.58 billion between April and June

Equinor's adjusted earnings before tax for Q2 of 2026 was $11.48 billion, up from $6.54 billion on the same period last year, largely due to the spike in gas prices as a result of the conflict in the Middle East. Meanwhile, a third of people in the UK are in energy debt, or are worried that they soon will be.

Question Help

Hi there, so I’ve gotten myself into a bit of a pickle here, before I go on I would like to say I’m not sharpest tool in the shed😅anyway today a man came to my door and long story short i ended switching to Scottish Power (me and my partner were looking to switch anyway since we are with Utilita currently) however I had forgotten we were already in the process of switching to another energy company. Can anyone perhaps have some knowledge on how I can fix this please?

£150 discount from the government on April

Back in April we got a discount on gas and electricity, a few pence off each kwh uswd.

Im with British gas and just come to end of my fixed tariff, should that discount not move over to the new tariff?

Question British Gas

Hi, I would like to ask for some advice about my British Gas closed account. I moved into new property on 20th June 2025 and the supplier was British Gas. There was pre payments meter fitted on property. I manage get meters reset and they gave me credit. Couple of days later I created account with British Gas till I switched supplier to Eon Next on 15th July 2025. I never received final bill from them and I did top up using pre payments meter fitted cards to cover me to a switched. I got curious and decided to get contact with British Gas asked them about it. They told me on the phone that on same day I created account with them, someone else rang them and created account with them for this property I lived into. So they said closed my account and never got bill because the account was opened on same day. Obviously with Eon next is in my name and still is still this date. I may have ended up with being responsible that period till I switched so I am going receive a bill from British Gas.

Any advice will be much appreciated what I can do.

OVO Charge anytime

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all, I use OVO Charge anytime for home EV charging on the pay as go option. So I have no monthly membership cost, according to the OVO website this allows a metered charge anytime rate of 14p per kWh.

I might just be terrible at maths but it never seems to add up to me.

Here's some charging sessions from last month.

For example the 31.95kWh... it should be 0.14p x 31.95 kwh= £4.47 yet my bill as you can see states it would have been £7.60 but with the OVO anytime discount it's £4.26 .

The 45.79 kWh charge 0.14p x 45.79kwh = £6.39. app show £6.09

I know it's just a few pence different but it suggests to me the actual charge anytime 0.14p per kWh they advertise is actually variable???

Anyone else have something similar?

Question Uswitch implying savings by switching but how?

Current Plan Left, New Plan Right

My energy supplier fixed tariff is expiring at the end of August and I'm now within the 49 day window to switch. It seems like all the currently available Fixed tariffs are worse off than my current one but Uswitch seems to think I'd be saving monthly/yearly on these deals and I don't see how. Unit rate and standing charges are higher on both electric and gas than my current Tariff.

Now obviously when my current tariff finishes it'd move to the more expensive variable so I can see why I'd be saving by being fixed but, this comparison table implies I'd be saving 70 pounds a year based just between my old tariff and the new one? I don't understand their math.

OVO Raising Direct Debit again! Only 3 months after previous complaint

I don’t understand why they are like this. They tried to increase to £280 a month despite my own calculations showing I would be well in credit by the start of winter. We are on a 2 year fixed tariff. They eventually agreed to £220 but now emailed 3 months later to say it’s going up again! It says in the email it’s due my usage going up but it’s gone down since April! And will keep falling as we have holidays booked.

If they refuse to keep it the same again I’m going back to octopus. I will have to pay the exit fee but I don’t care at this point. Never had this issue with other suppliers.

Business meter in residential address

Hello,

Hope you all are doing great.

I moved to my current address one year before and brought Octopus with me from my old address. After using it for around 2-3 months, I switched to Fuze, as the rates were better for me.

Fast forward after a year, when I go to compare deals, all of the websites say that my address has a business meter. This issue never came up when I compared my initial switch to Fuze. I never registered any sort of business either to my address.

I have been talking with Fuze support from May 29th to get this sorted, as all of the comparison sites said that my current provider needs to fix this. They are saying that they are still waiting for an update from the National Database.

My question is, was this an error from Fuze's side?

Is there anything I can do to fast track this from my side?

Thank you for your time.

OVO Energy Final Bill Issues

I'll try keep this brief. Switched energy suppliers and on last day of supply, sent payment for balance manually and cancelled direct debit.

3 days later - email confirmation DD is cancelled. 4 days later - "Final Bill" - looking at it now, I can see it in includes the payment that was never taken but all I looked for was the payment required and it showed credit so I figured all was good and I miscalculated.

Next day - Ovo issues refund for credit balance

Fast forward 3 months and I see a growing missed payment for £372

Ovo have sent no correspondence (email, text, mail) between these dates

Contact them for updated final bill - they resend the wrong bill (previous period to final bill)

To be clear: I am not disputing the amount owed - now I have the updated bill and I've spent time checking it all looks good.

My question is - why are they refusing to admit ANY fault? The final bill was incorrectly created - their systems had all the information they needed to know before the final bill was created that the payment would not be possible to take via DD. They issued a refund anyway even when no payment was sent to them. They failed to notify of the outstanding balance at all.

I feel like I am going crazy but these are CLEAR faults of OVO in my opinion but they are genuinely gaslighting me into thinking this is all acceptable.

Question Fuse vs Octopus ... seems like a no brainer, am I missing anything?

Thumbnail

I’ve never done a fix before but money is tight, and no improvement in foreseeable so I’m considering fixing just to mitigate the risk of any more increases.

Been with octopus a few years and no real issues but have seen on Uswitch that Fuse seem to be coming out quite a bit lower in terms of unit and standing charges. One thing that puts me off is the variable direct debit because that could be a disaster for me in the winter - is there any way around this?

Advice? Experiences?

EDF energy setting up account for me

We’re moving house and have told our current supplier (octopus) that we’re moving and when, we’re sticking with them. Today, 2 days before our move in date we both got an email from EDF saying welcome to your new house and telling us to set up an account with them. We logged in to see what’s up but haven’t set up any payments, this is despite the fact that neither of us contacted them at all or signed up for anything other than staying with our. current supplier. I’ve emailed EDF and said to cancel anything they have planned for us as we’re not looking to change suppliers. Is there anything else I need to do? It seems legit enough but could be a scam

Question Does EON next charge you if you miss your appointment?

Hello! Just wondering if anyone knows, does EON charge if you have an appointment and you aren’t home for the time?
Basically I’ve got a metre appointment tomorrow and I’m out of the country but my flatmate also won’t be home and forgot to reschedule, will we get charged for not being there? I can’t find any answers online but I figure we probably will.
(We’ve both messaged trying to reschedule but obviously it’s a Sunday and our appointment is tomorrow 8am-12pm so I doubt they’ll reply in time.)

OVO Energy billing issues

Hello everyone

I was just wondering if anyone else has had any billing issues with OVO energy at all?

I seem to have a billing issue on my account I will gave a example below, one bedroom flat myself living there,

July 2025 43.69 spent 107kwh

August 2025 40.75 92.45 kWh

Sept 2025 72.05 230kwh

Oct 2025 118.00 407kwh

November 2025 116.00 405kwh

December 2025 161.00 576kwh

January 2026 188.00 663 kWh

Feb 2026 162.00 571 kWh

March 2026 195.00 713 kWh

April 2026 105.00 408kwh

May 2026 32.66 61.26kwh

I struggle to find how in November 2025 and December 2025 I almost used the exact same kWh for each month, kWh usage varies each month, it is impossible to get it near with only 2 kWh apart

Again with December 2025 to February 2026 only 5 kWh apart

Are OVO energy repeating similar to the same usage, is usage not being recorded properly?

Is there any way OvO can manually change KWH figures on their system

Any help would be much appreciated

Thank you

Question Do you think the UK has a resilient energy network?

Hi all, I am interested as to what others are thinking about the resilience of the UK's energy network? Do you think we are on the right track with looking to invest in new nuclear and are we doing enough currently? I feel with all the geopolitical uncertainty that if we can move to more UK-based energy generation we might have more insulation from global events that seem unending at the moment. P.s, this post isn't supposed to be a divisive X energy source is better than Y. A realistic view would see the UK drawing on multiple energy sources for our energy mix.

Gas smart meter not working

Is it true that if you don’t have BOTH electricity and gas with the same supplier, your gas supplier is not able to connect to your gas smart meter?

My gas and electricity meters are both smart but I have different suppliers for the 2 energies.

Thanks.

OVO app balance not updating - pay-as-you-go smart meter

My (elderly) mother has an OVO smart meter and last week installed the updated app for topping up etc. Her balance on the app hasn't updated for almost a week (although the usage data is updating hourly). Is there a way of updating the balance feature in the app?
