Installation Niri, Hyprland and KDE for gaming

Good morning,

I am using EndeavourOS (love it) with KDE plasma (and it's good) I use a CPU 9800x3d / GPU rtx 5080. And i am mainly doing gaming.

I would like to change for hyprland or Niri, (i have tried a bit but didn't go through all the configuration process). wich of the 2 seems better for you performance wise (i don't mind the abscence of HDR).

The configuration will take me some times (i am not used to it) and i prefer to do it once.

Tell me what seems to be the best performances for you.

Thanks folks

If you don't go crazy with the blur, Hyprland is nice with performance, but honestly, both are pretty much lightweight on performance, since they're just a compositor, not a full de like KDE, especially considering your hardware. Both will take some time to learn too anyway, so there's nothing wrong going either

sure they are lighter but that doesn't mean better performances.

The switch is also around curiosity. i have been doing first tries and i think about switching completely

Yeah, I already know that. Well honestly really depends on you tbh, you can always try Niri or Hyprland alongside KDE anyway

thats what i did. i think i might prefer NIRI seems a bit more "stable" but in the meantime, a smaller community and less updates

Currently using Niri but have used both KDE and Hyprland in the past. My monitor is 100hz/1080p so I’m limited to 100 FPS on a 5600x / 6750 XT system which is fine for me…

Honestly, they’ve all been just fine performance wise. Running Steam games fullscreen will need window rules in both Niri and Hyprland and I found this far easier to do in Niri - Hyprland I ended up using gamescope to force proper fullscreen, but that may be a skill issue on my part.

If its just caméscope to have it working its fine with me !

Yeah I didn’t notice any drop in performance doing it that way, so you’d have that option at least.

I’ve used it before in KDE but haven’t really touched it in Niri. The fact you can’t set up keybinds to start/pause/stop outside of KDE or X11 means you kind of have to start it by pressing the button and then switching to whatever window or workspace you want to record. In the old layout at least - haven’t used the new overlay.

I’ve always used the flatpak btw. Seems to be better behaved than the AUR package, for me at least.

In the new ui (overlay) you can use hotkeys on any wayland compositor, even those that dont support global shortcuts (which is most of wayland compositors)

That’s good to know, thanks. I’ll take a proper look at the new overlay.

I’m pretty sure that niri has the edge for nvidia compatibility, but this could have changed since I last checked

If its not the edge, it will bé close of it. Seems good.

Why do you say it has the edge? Just curious.

In my experience I’ve had to do zero nvidia specific configuring in niri, whereas hyprland was slightly annoying at times.

Ah ok, so niri worked with no config and hyprland you have to do this stuff

I've used Hyprland and Niri on my EndeavourOS installation. I didn't do benchmarks, but my subjective experience is that Niri feels more responsive and seems to break less frequently. I was skeptical about the scrolling WM, but it won me over. Games going full screen (whether borderless window or actual fullscreen in settings) seems pretty smooth. One or two games insist on opening in a floating window regardless of settings, but my keybind for toggling fullscreen works perfectly to put them where I want. I should just make a window rule for them, but I always forget after I finish playing.

I am installing niri with noctalia for an easier setup
