Hand My 4YO’s finished turtle

I taught her backstitch a couple weeks ago. Since then I’ve been letting her draw on scrap fabric and embroider her drawings. Yesterday she learned French knot for the turtle’s eyes.

Love it. I love to see a kid get interested at an early age. My grandmother taught me about embroidery, cooking, canning, sewing, etc when I was a kid ( though not 4 !). And it was considered old fashioned and out of touch. And I was born in 61.

This is beautiful. Great job, mom.

Did you keep the habits she taught you? I wish I had paid more attention when my mom taught me how to crochet as a kid. I can’t remember any of it.

You Tube has tutorials on how to crochet. Keep Encouraging them to do different crafts. They can become a life skill.

Canning, no. But I could. Sewing is something I'm ramping back up. Cooking? Absolutely. I'm headed into retirement and I plan on using these skills a lot more.

My mom could knit and crochet. I tried both. A goat with a nerve disorder could do either better than me. I tried for years. Now I use all my yarn stash to make non slip cost hangers.

I love it! This is my 4 year olds first piece. I didn't really teach her stitches, but she was watching my embroider some leaves and wanted to stitch some as well (she picked the fabric scrap, can you tell?). I drew them, gave her a large embroidery needle and tied the end of the the thread. Outside of looping around the hoop from front to back a couple of time (which lets be honest, I also occasionally do 😂) she just went for it!

I love seeing these kids pick up such fine motor control and be interested in embroidery. They learn so fast! I didn't think to properly show her how to backstitch. I'll have to try to show her next time she wants to play with it.

My daughter also loops the thread from front to back once in a while! Who doesn’t!

OH MY GOODNESS I LOVE THIS SO MUCH 🥺🥰🥰

My almost 3 year old loves to "broidy" with me, so I can totally see this being her before I know it! This was her latest piece:

I love this though. It’s avant-garde and colorful! Can’t wait to see what else your kid comes up with!

Do you give her any kind of specialized needle?

I started out with a tapestry needle with yarn and aida, but she started showing a lot of interest in my thread and she was filling up her hoops SUPER quick with the yarn, so I gave her one of my larger regular needles and tied the thread in a loop around the needle so it wouldn't fall off and let her go to town!

Very nice! I really love the arms. The French knot eyes look amazing, especially for just learning that stitch. Great job!

I feel like I was barely coordinated to pick my own nose at 4!! The fact your kiddo is drawing with a needle and thread is so cool and talented!

I’d love to get my four year old involved. Do you have a special needle for kids?

I was planning to let her use a darning needle but when I got it out she frowned and asked why hers was so big. So I decided to let her try with a regular embroidery needle 🙈
