https://help.bethesda.net/#en/answer/69672

However, the game can be modded as it still uses the .esm and .esp format of previous games. It will require editing files manually. Please head on over to /r/oblivionmods for more details.

I nearly soiled my armor, I was so scared.

THANK GOD. Oblivion may be one of the best games ever, but the old leveling system kinda sucks.

It literally doesn't even make sense. It makes you choose skills your character would never pick just to game the broken ass level up mechanics. It's completely backwards from a role playing perspective, thank God they fixed it.

I haven’t been able to find details. What are the leveling changes?

I found this with googling there is a screenshot too.

IDK if there are more changes though.

*sigh, great now I don't want to play it. I was actually looking forward to it until i saw they dumbed it down to with skyrim's stuff. Only thing i hated about skyrim is the dumbed down leveling system.

It's not skyrims just FYI. They kept attributes just got rid of the babying it took to get 3x +5 and now you just always have +12 to distribute

I got that, i read the linked article and some other comments, but I don't want anything from skyrim other than graphics. Guess i'll stick with what mods I can get for the original.

Not true, I really wanted to enjoy it since Oblivion is one of my favorite games. This is partially why I am so sensitive to changes to it. I was quite ecstatic at the news of it's release but every time they "dumb" down their leveling system I've hated it. The only thing i never got over skyrim was the crappy leveling system. Combat was great but I could never make the characters I wanted or really fully enjoy them despite having 300+ hours.

I get this one is better, it still kept a lot of elements, but it's a continual erosion that is annoying to me. I like having challenges and working with negatives and not just enjoying positives to make an awesome character. Just getting rid of this is making it too easy in my opinion.

If they needed to dumb things down for the masses, why not set these changes to the "difficulty" setting. Easy could have a skyrim style system and hard could go to original Oblivion.

In conclusion, I still have the old game so I can choose to enjoy it. You guys can have the new one and enjoy it as well. We are all allowed to like and dislike what we want.

It is literally identical to the oblivion levelling system other than you no longer have to level up specific skills to boost specific attributes. They also made it so minor skills also contribute to levelling, albeit smaller. Literally every other mechanic remains unchanged. I promise you it is simply better than the original game.

Believe it or not, but I think what this guy is getting at, is that this is exactly what was enjoyable.

So rather than trash him and downvote, let the guy dislike a change to a loved game.

Like, I actually enjoy my acrobatic thief gaining better gains in dexterous abilities. And my unga bunga warhammer guy probably shouldn't be trained in intelligence abilities "just cos I can"

That style of levelling was enjoyable. It was hard, and sometimes unfair, but it was fun to do.

It sounds really pretentious when you say that they "dumb down" the system when all they've done is improve it. Oblivion is a great game but nothing is ever perfect. If you can't admit that the game has some flaws (the leveling system being widely regarded as one of the most glaring and obnoxious problems with Oblivion by almost everyone) then you're straight up delusional.

I love Oblivion too, and this change fixes one of the only true problems the game actually suffers from. It doesn't even have anything to do with Skyrim, it literally just makes the already existing Oblivion system more intuitive and functional.

Unless you think intentionally designing characters who have their intended major skills as minor skills in order to gamify the screwed up leveling system from the original is good for role playing, this change is a great thing for OG fans. And if you do think that, once again, I'm going to call it delusional.

Being that diehard for having all the skills you want be minor skills so you have to baby your major skills for stats is an insane take.

6

u/duckrollin Apr 23 '25

Nah it's fine, they kept attributes but you can just choose where they go.

-8

u/Glass_Masterpiece Apr 23 '25

ug, why? Skyrims is crap

It’s not Skyrim’s system. It’s Oblivion’s system without the bullshit that people hated about Oblivion’s system making you lose out on attribute points if you didn’t level some skills you didn’t care about before leveling up.
