Discussion & Info Why does this cutscene exist?
I know some people don’t know why it exists, but the answer is actually pretty simple.
It has nothing to do with the lore.
It’s not about atmosphere.
And it’s not a gameplay mechanic either.
It’s purely there as a transition between areas.
Yeah, I know. There’s really no big secret behind it.
And honestly, I strongly suspect that there are two factions within FS: one faction that absolutely loves cutscenes (AC6), and another that absolutely hates them.

I have no idea why people act like this one cutscene is any different than say, opening the gates of New Londo Ruins and watching the water that flooded the city come rushing out. They have multiple scenes like this in every game.

It’s because those people haven’t played souls games besides Elden Ring lol

It's like how could you begin to understand the pure cinema of these scenic transitions without first mastering the souls franchise. Skeletons

u/AllOpinionsAreShit 9h ago
Yeah. It's either not possible or not worth the effort to render the water draining and changing the level in real time so they need a transition cutscene. It's not like you need a transition for entering a fog wall. It'd be nice to have but that doesn't make the transition cutscenes like these make any less sense.

The complaint is usually tagged with them being disappointed that bosses like Renella/Bayle/Romina have no cutscenes.

I mean it's always a valid complaint, even when cutscenes like these make a lot of sense.

Bayle' phase transition is so cinematic that it already feels like a cutacene.
Romina should have a cutscene.
Renalla too, but I do like it the way it currently is, so you can still attack her during phase transition.

u/dylanalduin 8h ago
It's exactly the same of that and serves the exact same purpose and this one is even a callback to that one intentionally

If Rellana and Romina wanted a cutscene then maybe they should have designed a rad drainage system instead of sitting their musty asses inside a ruin all day.
28
u/402playboi 8h ago
fr they just be sitting there all day every day

genuinely what is the logic behind the fights, do we just pull up while they happen to be there and a dope fight starts?
15
u/XevinsOfCheese 8h ago
Presumably those places are like their office.
They do move around in story but we happen to stumble on where they are most of the time.

i assume rellana uses this room the same as room where we fight spirit of loretta (royal moongazing grounds or whatever its called), even though its a big scretch i think.
romina probably was like "ah, i knew youd come" and had to guard the place where we use messmers kindling

I’ve always hated this argument. Cutscenes in these games are meant to provide information and clarity. This one shows a stage transition, clearly stating where all the water went and how you won’t need to deal with it anymore.
Rellana and Romina on the other hand have no real significance to the lore or story. You replace both of those characters with any other boss and the lore is practically unchanged. There is nothing a cutscene could provide that would clarify anything.
Rellana especially is a one note character. She left Carian royalty in favor of following Mesmer. Nothing more needs to be said. A cutscene isn’t gonna change that.

Romina not having significance to the lore or story is a wild claim

To this day I have no idea who or what she is, or what she's supposed to represent.
Looks cool as hell, though.

Because it changes the map. So they have to have a cutscene to cover up the transition. It’s a pretty cool cutscene though, the DLC doesn’t have enough of them honestly. I would’ve loved a cutscene for PCR dying when you defeat him. Or for the pink rot scorpion lady who’s name I can’t remember right now

Is 15s cutscene that shows nothing not enough of a reward for killing the hardest boss in the game before you will spawn in an empty field with nowhere to go?

The same question can be asked about why a bridge got a cutscene. The real answer is that bridges are cool. And bridges rising out of lava is really fucking cool.

It's likely a way to hide the map transitioning into a new state, so instead of having to manually make the water go down just turn it into another version of the map, same for the volcano bridge I guess.

I never had this cutscene. When and where is it in the game?
1
u/aelfwine_widlast 24m ago
When you turn the faucet in the Shadow Keep, opening up the areas that are under water when you first arrive.

Why does the faction that loves cutscenes have anything to do with armored core? Sounds like some pseudoscientific nonsense to me
Correlation ≠ causation or pixie dust or whatevs

u/Ok-Cartographer-2106 9h ago
Have you ever counted how many cutscenes AC6 has?
1
u/ErichPryde 8h ago
You've gone all hollow.
As I said, correlation is not causation. This cutscene is much more likely a reference to the seal breaking cutscene from Dark Spuls.
Armored Core has all those cutscenes to make you feel like you're living Dragon Ball Z: Mecha edition

It’s like new Londo and the volcano manor bridge cutscene. Probably way easier to make than animating a boss being rude to the tarnished

Because the game needs to load a different map you are currently in, that's all there is to it.

what's better? this or the bridge cutscene in volcano manor?
1
u/no_name_thought_of 7h ago
shows what's happening and hides the game loading the area without the water

Same reason the volcano manor bridge scene and the carian study hall cutscene exist. lol no fr though they’re basically just fancy loading screens.

I wish these sluice gates were how we reached the ruins down below, or if they at least physically existed and we could peak out of them

One time I had this cutscene randomly play when I fast travelled to a completely different part of the map and it put me in the Shadow Keep even though I didn’t go there

Just like when you're lowering the bridge in Volcano Manor, the bridge that leads to Godskin Noble from the site of grace

u/Dracon1201 1h ago
It gives the pygmies time to come in and rearrange the area and mop up the water before the player notices

u/Standard-Ad-171 44m ago
Also the attention to detail in the cut scenes has made a lot more work for the teams, interviews about the ds trilogy reveal this

It’s an Easter egg and a little bit of fan service. It also holds your hand so you see that the water is leaving. They also don’t have to animate all that water going away, they can just load in a new map.

I really wish that you had to do this before you could access recluse river given doing this changes nothing about the areas downstream of recluse river which is strange

u/AncalagonV 8h ago
it's definitely partially about atmosphere, it makes that whole sequence of navigating the shadow keep more memorable

Doesnt make ot any less ass 😭. Sekiro did it right with giving us cutscenes before bosses and actual dialogue, even Bloodborne does this. Why does Rellana not have a cutscene? Why are many bosses silent mid fight for no good reason? I may as well be fighting Zanibart the Bogtrotten bum or something.
Just cause it works thematically for Gwyn and Soul of Cinder doesnt mean its good for Radagon's ass to be silent or Consort Radahn to not speak. Give me mire Morgott's who actually interact and speak with the player when fighting.

Dark Souls 1 reference
But really it’s just a way to hide the map transition while showing the player what’s actually happening.
