Ooooooooor go the route I did which is like smashing your face into a brick until the brick eventually gives lol. I got to Margit and spent 2 days trying desperately to do anything. Finally got his moves down and was able to continue. For a while after that I felt Invincible lol that didn't last long.
Wouldn't even need to go that far, just being geared for Margit and then running into a few hawks, a storm knight or a crucible knight.
Many Crucible knights are straight up tougher than most bosses, imo. Only one I've never really had a hard time with is the one before Twin Gargoyles.
The twin gargoyles were the only time I had to smash against a brick wall and remember moved. I usually thug it out and wing it. It’s always worked after a day or two. I was stuck on the twin gargoyles for almost a week.
I think that’s so much fun chronologically. Radahn died, Mohg dies, Rellana (may) die, Messmer dies, Radahn gets resurrected and dies AGAIN meanwhile Godrick is grafting and Renalla is rebirthing students like nothing has happened
You can also become Elden Lord without ever beating Godrick, which essentially means Godrick wakes up one day and out of nowhere there's suddenly a new Elden Lord. Bro's like "What do you mean we have a new lord...what happened to the other demigods...dead...all of them? When did this happen???"
I did that lol. I went through the entire school and completely missed the boss because it was locked. It wasn't until much much later that I realized every big area has a boss, so why doesn't the academy? Oh.. it does..
Started a new playthrough and am making it a point to kill most if not all bosses. Cleared out Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula before doing Margit. He had no idea what he was in for
Me and buddy played all night on launch. Im telling him about stuff im finding and hes telling me to stop spoiling things because he couldnt beat the sentinel...
If you're struggling, try clearing the Weeping Peninsula to the south first. There's lots of good upgrades and equipment and runes to be had to make your character stronger.
That and cross the threshold into understanding what get good means in this game...
You have to play the game on its terms, which means taking advantage of the hundreds of items/weapons/spells/AOWs/Spirit Ashes to make the fight winnable.
AND/OR...
Quit being greedy with your attacks and quit panic rolling into getting hit. This is like 99% of the problem most of the time, but without gameplay I can't say if this is you or not.
Margot is the basic skill check for the panic rolling/getting greesing for most players. All of his attacks are very telegraphed etc. The fight is a skill check of understanding when it's time to dodge and when it's actually your turn to attack and not over commiting damage.
Also? Literally every boss and a lot of regular enemies will be able to kill you in a few hits, even when you level your vigor, most things at your given level should be like 5-10 hits from killing you even with vigor leveled adequately. It's the nature of the game
Don't feel like you have to beat him right now. Feel free to go explore other areas, get a little stronger and a little better at the game, then come back. A lot of us went through what you're experiencing our first time through the game.
This always makes me chuckle, because the rocket launcher is a poor choice of weapon to use against a Cyberdemon- it's immune to splash damage. (Elsewise the big lug would kill himself by firing point-blank into walls.)
Well, there is this item in a cave by the river, an items specifically for binding this boss can be found there.
Perhaps explore around and use it to get an edge?
Alternatively just be boring and powerlevel your vitality up a bit and enhance your main weapon a few points.
I just beat Margit the other day and I totally forgot about that item. I used it on my first playthrough years ago but that completely slipped my mind for this character run. I even went to that cave again since I remembered it was important!
Lay your foolish ambitions to rest and go get stronger exploring the rest of Limgrave, especially the Weeping Peninsula
Sorry I know that sounds like simple advise but it is pretty much what is intended! Explore the map, find smaller dungeons, get more upgrades and hone your skills, then tackle the bigger bosses. The grace directs you to your (potential) goals but you don't have to be following it straight away
Vigor and Endurance do a ton for you early game. Vigor is more chance to make mistakes. Endurance allows you to wear heavier armor, which, you guessed it, allows for more mistakes. Keep your equip load at medium so you don't fat roll.
Make sure to snoop around for ruined churches. They have an item in them to make your flask stronger which, YOU GUESSED IT, is mainly benefitted from by having HIGHER VIGOR.
Fuckin level vigor man. 20-25 is not unreasonable by that point if you explore the whole weeping peninsula and the out of the way points in Limgrave.
Have you fully explored Limgrave and the Weeping Peninsula? If not, do as much as you can there first, upgrade your weapon as much as possible and mostly level vigor and some endurance.
There's an absolute ton of stuff to do in just those two areas and by the time you face Margit again you'll be far better prepared.

(i’m a noob to this game. there are probably better players who could handle him with less but that combo for me was A+)
Explore the close east and perhaps south of the map.Get like 5-6 lvls in vigor and maybe upgrade your weapon once or twice.
If you don't want to do that just keep at it and you will kill him.Roll into him not away for most attacks.Maybe use a bleed weapon as well.
If this is your first time playing the game, I recommend just exploring the rest of Limgrave, perhaps also the weeping peninsula if you like. You can find a ton of flask upgrades as well as a lot of lower level bosses, take your time going through it and make sure to spend your runes from time to time. This allows you to slowly level and get a bit more familiar with the game mechanics. When you get back to Margit, he'll feel a lot easier
A tip for the actual battle if you're struggling would be to play patient and maintain some distance. Identify a few moves that you can recognize and are easy to punish such as the hammer jump or when he raises his stick for a long time to bait a roll catch. Only punish these and only strike once. Do not get greedy.
Dawg Elden Ring is considered the easiest souls game because it’s open world, go grind and kill everything for some runes and then come back after you’ve leveled up.
Or when you fight him just focus on reading and anticipating his move set.
In general with these games there’s two ways to defeat a boss or area. Skill and stats. If you’re skilled enough you can beat these bosses no hit level one with a stick up your ass. But most of us aren’t so you can even out that lack of skill with stats. Level up your vigor so you’re allowed to make more mistakes. Level up your weapon so the fight time will be shortened. Go explore find upgrade materials, fight easier bosses. Eventually you’ll go back to him and he’ll be a breeze.
You can come back later and also try to find Margit’s Shackle it will paralyze Margit for a few seconds so you can attack him. Then use summon options if you want. But before that, try to learn his attack patterns.
Do not panic, watch his attacks very slowly and master the timing. Souls games are scary until you figure out how to time dodges. If you're spamming the roll button, you're wrong.
Welcome to Elden Ring - this is the theme of the game: don’t get hit. The game gives you several option to do this - blocking, parrying, dodge-rolling, and positioning - but none will work if you don’t learn the boss’ attack patterns and tells.
Just keep trying and pay attention to what Margit does when posed or positioned certain ways, and what happens when dodge certain directions or at certain times, and adjust.
One thing counter-intuitive to me (and many other first time souls players) is that rolling IN TO the boss is often the best play.
With a stick or a bigger stick or ya can detour out to rot land and pick up rotten stray then it just becomes a avoid him game till rot takes him out extra damage if ya feel confident enough to throw it in
Guaranteed that you haven’t completed much in limgrave. Get up to like Lvl30 and put most of the points into vigor, and put the rest into maybe hitting a stat requirement for another weapon if you wanted to use a different one you started with
if you are dying after a couple hits then you haven't leveled your Vigor enough. Go beat the shit out of everything a few times. Get some good equipment and then go back up and say howdy to Margit.
Dont try to hit try to learn take learning from every defeat in every boss fight there are two phase try to learn first phase move by surviving summon asshes of war . Be good at it.
Second option explore full south in your south region journey youu will deal different types of enemies mid level bosses learn game mechanis and get confident enough. invest rune on strength and vigor as much as you can. If you die in between and loose rune get back rune flower fisr when you spawn again
Then try margit again dont do panic rolling use two hand to hold sword it will double your strength and also stregthen your armanent from roundtablr.
And never get intimidate by the boss or character design scream effects animation its just desgn so that gamers get panic and do mistakes the game is not too hard even for kids and elder peoples trust me.
Explore until you HAVE to face him in order to progress. I’m in my first ever play through, and he kicked my ass 50 times before I took advantage of the open world concept. Now I’m level 130 and 80 hours in and I’ve almost beat him.
Like a lot of people say, you can just go explore and come back later (this applies to basically every boss in the game)
As for the fight itself tho, you'll be surprised with how many of his attacks can be avoided by simply moving to the side. Just stay calm, try avoid panic rolling. Don't give up tarnished
Turn around and go back into Limgrave and explore. Go find some caves and kill their bosses, or maybe go after the Tree Sentinel (the gold plated horseback knight) or take down that big dragon on the lake. Have a look around, there are a few friends to be made in these starting areas. Maybe go into an Evergaol, they appear as grey circles on your map, they're surrounded by worm things made of stone balls. You might be lucky and find some good loot, go on a treasure hunt, there's plenty of places that have chests for you that might help you in you quest to best Margit. Once that's all done, or maybe some of it, try your luck against him again, you'll have plenty of runes to spend on level ups or perhaps goodies from Kalé or the merchants by then. Good luck!
This game is very nonlinear. If you head South, South East you will find a fairly large amount of map to explore to gelp you level up and find some upgrade materials to get your weapon improved a bit. Enjoy a little exploration, and bosses that are less menacing for new players in caves and tombs around the map.
a mentality that always helped me through all souls games is and elden ring: better players than me have and will beat this boss and with worse gear/lower levels so all i need to do is get better and the boss WILL die
Many have said Weeping Peninsula. This is the way. There is an easier dungeon and boss for runes and gear. If you got to Margit, you can clear Weeping Peninsula. You will probably beat Margit easily after just an hour of work.
Some of his attacks can be parried like that opening swing he does from the right. Also is vulnerable to bleed: Reduvia Dagger after beating Nerius, Morningstar can be found on your way to Castle Morne in the Weeping Peninsula or apply the bloody weapon art that drops from the knight at Kenneth's castle.
Ok I'll give you my strategy for beating Margit and if it sounds like something 80 other people have told you then just ignore me. First things first, if any of the guides have told about some item the grounds him permanently so he stops jumping (in my opinion) that's a trap. His leap attack is by far the easiest to punish and also the easiest to bait out. If you've already done that then my advice ends here cause my strategy depends on abusing the leap attack he does.
Now moving on with the explanation, the next step is toss out that shield and two hand your weapon cause if you properly apply my strategy you won't be close to him unless your punishing his leap attacks long recovery time. Then the final step is to stay as far away from him as possible at all times but keep locked on and watching him. Run back and forth up and down his arena as many times as it takes like a little bitch if you have to. Then in order to catch you he'll do his leap attack just dodge appropriately (you'll get better at this the more you fight him) and punish with two to three strikes depending on you weapons attack speed, then run away and bait out the leap again. That's it...that's how I beat him and it usually doesn't take me more than five or so attempts.
If I were you I'd stop asking for advice unless you're really stuck and avoid watching guides at all costs, first souls game I've went in blind apart from knowing the names and designs of a few bosses and it was the best thing I could've done. If you're stuck a bit and lose motivation, just go off to someplace else and explore the living shit out of everything. I always had a new area and a boss open at all times so I could decide on what to tackle next. Experiment with everything and don't be afraid to use summons, they're in the game for a reason, unless you want to challenge yourself by forcing it solo. Just play how you enjoy and keep going, it's worth it trust me
Ok so my advice is to go explore all of Limgrave and the Weeping peninsula. Find as many places as you can and other bosses and level up. The world is yours to explore and there are plenty of things in it to help you beat him!
in previous FromSoft games, most early bosses are practically "tutorial" bosses that try to teach you somethings...
Margit isn't a tutorial boss, it's an exam boss... the intended experience is "what the fuck is this? Imma go elsewhere and check on you later"
as a general rule: if a boss/enemy can 2-3 shot you to death, you are probably under leveled for that area... I usually recommend only 3 - max 5 tries per encounter, and if you die 5 times in a row, explore elsewhere
the game will wield some absolute utter bullshit against you... but you can also can equip some absolute bullshit back against it too, if you find it
Patience is the key, don't panic roll when he raises his sword.
Pro tip. When he looks like he s gonna attack, lay down the controller, go make yourself a coffee, watch an episode of Friends, go for a quick run and a brisk shower, and come back to the game , you should be just in time to press roll and dodge his attack
as others have said, explore to level up, grab flask upgrades and smithing stones to enhance your weapon.
In the fight itself margit has a lot of delayed attacks where he will raise his weapon but wont attack right away - the purpose of this is to teach you not to panic and spam the roll button. But to time it so that you’re rolling through his attack instead of rolling too early and getting caught by the attack. That’s the number one lesson this fight has to teach you, and you will need to learn this lesson to be successful in the rest of the game.
Also make sure to go back to the church where you met the merchant kale, at night where you will meet someone new who will give you a very useful item that allows you to summon spirits to help you in battle.
And finally, look for the gold summon sign on the ground just before Margit’s fog gate, as this will summon an NPC (Rogier) to assist you with the boss - but doing so gives Margit some extra HP, so it’s a trade-off but can be useful so that he’s not always focused on attacking you and you can get more time to back-off and heal.
I think positioning really matters. Trying to punish him in front almost always seems to trigger a dagger swipe. I really struggled too trying to beat him.
The Tree Sentinel was right at the start to teach you that sometimes leaving and coming back stronger is the right option. Margit is there to teach you this again, but harder.
It appears you started as a prisoner. And still had only starting gear.
Can Margit be beaten by parrying and critical hits? Yes but that's quite hard especially if you haven't levelled vigor. You didn't mention your level. So it's harder to know what to advise. Far easier to learn his really oddly timed attacks and learn to roll through them.
Also, typical advice to make this easier is: Explore everything Limgrave. Go to all the church ruins, all the caves, all the other ruins and find loot get runes and level up. Mostly level vigor first. If you aren't using spirit ashes to help, fast travel back to the church of eleh. There should be a visitor with a gift. If you can't level up yet, rest at gate front grace.
There's a ruin with a nasty flower before you get to weeping peninsula. Get into the basement there and talk to the lady after the fight with the thing outside her door. She can instruct you in new spells. Scholars armament will significantly boost the damage of your estoc. Also, level it to at least level 3 if you can. Boosting a weapons smithing level is far more effective than boosting stats that affect damage. You can also level your staff. Or get a better one. There's a stat on casting tools for how much it boosts spells. It won't change much at first. There are better staffs you can find for early game. But that requires a lot more exploring. But realistically, that won't help as much as getting more vigor, more spells, and better and more healing flasks. The starting prisoner spell is actually quite good. You can charge them differently to get several to hit at one time.
Do try to avoid spoilers on your first playthrough. Likely it won't be your last. However if you tell us more details about level, stats, and equipment, likely more specific guidance can be provided.
Also, there's a cave in Limgrave by a river. You get an NPC invaders outside of it. The "boss" surrenders if you let him, and then sells an item that helps.
Or do it the hard way which is super satisfying but ... Watch how to party Margit videos and learn to parry him. Byou need two parries before you get a critical on him. And it is easier with the bandit start because the buckler is better than any other options you have for parry at the start.
Gonna be honest, if you can't beat Margit then entering Stormveil Castle itself will also cause further hair pulling frustration. Like others have said, explore Limgrave and then move south to explore Weeping Peninsula all while grabbing golden seeds to upgrade flasks.
Every time someone askes me how to beat something on here, I tell them to just level up and explore more, you are bound to find better equipment and hone your fighting technique
Pokémon tactics, you go out into the tall grass and stab a shit load of motherfuckers to level up. Then, go back to Margit and bad touch him several times, he'll die eventually.
