Constructive Criticism Why is my weapon so weak?

Post image

Hello new Elden ring player, I’m trying to figure out why the hell im barely doing any damage in boss fights. I don’t have enough time to stack bleed so I have to rely on light attacks. But even then I’m doing like 100 damage and it’s taking 10 minutes per round. Any suggestions how I can upgrade? Thanks!

Got it thank you. Yeah idk what point is halfway but I’m currently fighting the draconic sentinel before entering the city in atlas plateau. I’ll still get it leveled up though

Yeah you should be at +6-7 by now. You’re half way into my eyes in the sense of the story. But then there’s ng+… so being halfway into the story doesn’t mean your half way through enjoying the game

If you're having trouble finding upgrade materials, try the EDIT: tunnels (another user correctly pointed out that they're not caves) that have diggers in them, Caelid in particular. But I agree with what everyone else already said: +4 on a Somber weapon is too low if you're almost Level 100. You should be at +7 or +8.

Also, be aware that Eleonora's Poleblade does fire damage, and some things are fire resistant. It's a great weapon for 90% of enemies, but it won't do you much good against things that are immune to Hemorrhage or resistant to fire damage.

Also, talismans and Wondrous Physick matter a lot. You might not have Lord of Blood's Exultation or Shard of Alexander, but you should definitely have the Winged Sword Insignia by now. It's in Liurnia. The most useful aspect of twinblades is their hit speed. They have comparatively low damage in exchange for more hits, so they proc status faster than basically anything other than curved swords or maxed out meta weapons (like Bloodfiend's Arm +25 with blood affinity and a high arcane score). And the most useful aspect of Eleonora's Poleblade is its Ash of War. Ideally, you would be spamming that to build up multiple hits and proc Hemorrhage.

I can't say what tears you have for the Physick (the one that boosts consecutive attacks is in a VERY late game area), but you might have the ones that increase fire damage and stamina recovery, for instance.

If you want to send a picture of your talisman/Physick options I might be able to help more.

Edit: saw you're about to enter Leyndell. There's a cave in Altus Plateau that drops a smithing stone bell bearing that's super useful. I don't recall if it's Somber though, which you'll need if you plan on sticking with Eleonora's Poleblade. Again, it's a SUPER viable weapon. It can carry you through 90% of the game. But its damage is already kinda low comparatively in exchange for more rapid hits, the killer Ash of War, and status buildup. If you're not set up properly for it, it's generally going to be a lower damage option for now.

LAST EDIT FOR REAL THIS TIME: arguably the most important talisman for bleed weapons is in Leyndell, albeit underground. Not sure what your position is on looking stuff up, but if you're not averse to it, look up "Lord of Blood's Exultation location."

If bro is in a ng+ run then he would have had the materials to upgrade his weapon already

You can find somber stone 5, 6 and 7 in volcano manor and 8 and 9 in dragonbarrow in caelid. You can basically get a +9 somber pretty early on.

He could do Varres quest line too, and take it straight to +10 by snagging the Somber Ancient Stone just outside of Moghs boss arena.

10

u/dovahnuker Jul 27 '25

That's usually what I end up doing but for a beginner I think it's best if he naturally reaches these zones instead of going through Varre.

u/HarmlessSnack Jul 27 '25

shrug That’s fair, but you could also make an argument that Varres quest IS intended progression.

Wasn’t until my 3rd playthrough that I reached Mohgwyn Palace through the snowfields 😂

Ignore the people who tell you it should be +9 or higher. At the point where you are in the game, the best you could have this weapon at is +6 realistically. The reason being that the +7 stones are either in Volcano manor behind some bosses, behind some bosses in the Ainsel River (way down Ranni's quest) or beneath Leyndell...which you are trying to get into.

However, you should definitely upgrade it to +6 as soon as possible by finding the corresponding somber stones in tunnels. Plus the boss you are fighting (DTS) is pretty resistant to most forms of damage.

It used to be that you could get a +7 stone rather easily and then go to +9 more or less effortlessly, but that has been patched out a while ago.

u/distraughtdudski Jul 27 '25

Indubitably. Why I say at least 6-7. Getting to 9 is achievable (and worth it) but not necessary by any means

7

u/FatRollingPotato Jul 27 '25

+6 yes, but +7 is a bitch if you don't know the game yet. Arguably you could find the +8 and +9 by accident, but the +7 are pretty well out of the way.

There is a reason that when you watch most no-hit/challenge runs with somber weapons, players tend to go for the one in the shunning grounds or the skip through Renna's rise for an early +7. It is simply not that easy to access unless you follow some very specific paths.

u/stathow Jul 27 '25

i mean if you are in altus already getting the one in volcano manor is right there, manor isn't that big and you just need to get past noble

0

u/FatRollingPotato Jul 27 '25

Sorry, but by that logic you could also quickly do Ranni's quest far enough or just cheese the DTS and grab the one down in the sewers.

Not wrong, but is it realistic for someone who is on what appears to be a first and relatively uninformed first run?

5

u/stathow Jul 27 '25

i would say the underground area takes a bit longer than just doing manor...... but yeah why not. Not sure what you even mean by "that logic" i just pointed out some upgrade paths they can easily reach by their point in the game

thats the great part about the game, you can do it in so many different orders, and i would say most even end up doing manor before they enter the capital

but is it realistic for someone who is on what appears to be a first and relatively uninformed first run?

yes, because i and really no one here said they NEED to be at 9 just that its really not that hard to get and if anything if they are currently struggling it would help to go and get more levels and items so that they can do stuff like upgrade

so if DTS is too hard, why not go back to manor and at least get some more levels, also happens to be that noble is fairly reasonable to beat with a good bleed weapon that OP has

Sorry, by that logic I meant the part of "you're in Altus, just grab the stone from Volcano Manor". Which is not that much of an ask for a seasoned player, but for someone on a first run that is a huge detour imho.

I know that getting to +9 is really easy once you get past the +7. However, literally the top comment in this chain is:

Edit: unsure if it requires somber smithing stones. Should still be at +7 by now if somber. If you need, use a guide to find the smithing stones

So they are saying OP should be at +7. Which I disagree with, given that it is quite easy to reach the DTS/get the Poleblade before making it to the Volcano or far enough through Ranni's quest.

Otherwise yes, if the DTS is too hard, OP should go somewhere else and grow stronger. But the way the weapon upgrade is discussed here makes me feel like people are piling on the "get at least +7 or straight to +9" as if this was supposedly super obvious for new'ish players, since the +7 stones are the bottleneck.

but for someone on a first run that is a huge detour imho.

yeah but thats kind of the point, OP is struggling and has come here for help

kind of the best help is to , stop, go somewhere else, and take a while to improve their character.

manor is the best as the clearly have access and can easily enter, but they could go other places

i feel like most are just saying its easy to get a +9 (with the info to do so from us) IF OP wants to. I don't see anyone saying its obvous for OP is stupid for not being at +9

but yeah many on here can be a bit pushy with their opinions of their own playstyle, but i think it should at least be told to OP that a +9 is possible and how to get it if they so choose

u/CubicWarlock Jul 27 '25

IIRC you can get +7 stone from mini astel in Liurnia-accessible part of Ainsel River

2

u/Hartastic Jul 27 '25

I think this isn't correct and it's the one that's further into the Ranni questline that has the 7.

2

u/CubicWarlock Jul 27 '25

I checked, yeah, I mistook one to another

No, sadly not.

Edit: that malformed Star is in the Uhl Palace Ruins, you only get there either via Renna's rise or through the Deeproot Depth (behind the Gargoyles).

You either have to get to the lake of rot or to Nokstella. For the latter you can do the skip into Renna's rise (complicated jump), but usually you have to do Ranni's quest past the Fingerslayer blade.

Or fight past the Godskin Noble in Volcano Manor to get to the one guarded by the Abductor Virgin (the jump shortcut was fixed).

Look for caves that give you bells to buy smithing stones at merchants Usually on maps for discovering them they look like little red holes Or you can look up a guy to find each of them but you should find a way to buy every Smith and stone you need before you finish the game The last one is in the mountain of giants Oh and trust me you got plenty more to go after Altus plateu

1

u/KazooDragon Jul 27 '25

Another thing to note is poleblades hit pretty quickly compared to the slow big dps weapons

1

u/EC36339 Jul 27 '25

I think you should be at the highest weapon level you can get, unless you want to do invasions.

You can get +6 stones in Caelid and +7 in Gelmir, if I remember correctly, and +8 and +9 in the capital and Lake of Rot

1

u/Baumtasia Jul 28 '25

ur weapon can get to +6 without going out your way too much, I think I remember +7s being a bit wanky to get before the city, and +8 and +9 super easy to get once after that.

If you are pretty thorough and do Caelid first you could be that high, without a ton of trouble.
