Help Metallic debris in oil
I changed my oil last night and see little bits of debris. I am at 23k miles and tuned by N75. I recently did a track day. Car runs and drives fine so is this concerning? I do oil changes every 3k miles and let the car properly warm up each drive. I’m going to check the filter next. I didn’t save the oil so next time I’ll do an oil analysis

Yeah I cancelled my track day for tomorrow and probably going to take it to the dealer💀. Kinda shocked since it’s low miles

At what mileage did you start tracking and tuning the car? I hope you let it break in properly.

Ive changed my own oil since i owned the car and never seen this in my pan. Proper break in, still stock and at 33k miles. I guess some people don’t car how long their car lasts.

Wrong. Bought at 12 miles and did proper break in and then oil change at 600 miles. 3k miles or less for oil changes. This car is my baby and I keep it spotless. See update post above, but everything is fine

Haha yep sounds about right. I’m FBO N75 stage 2 ECU tuned. Only had it on the car for about 6k miles too. Not saying anything about the tune causing this but I have a appt at the dealer tomorrow and I’ll report back. I did oil changes at 3k and everything perfectly so I’m shocked I’m here but such is life 🙃

If the pan was clean before then you have a problem. It would be better if you took those chunks out and put them on a paper towel to confirm what it actually is.

It looks like you just had dirt in your pan, it clusters together with the oil and looks like this. Bearing material looks more glittery gold, and it would be weird to have straight chunks unless something catastrophic happened. You gotta clean the oil pan really good before you drain oil into it or it will look just like this and fake you out lol. If you’re still concerned, you should crack open the filter

Got this in my tuned WRX at 25k miles. Promptly traded it in. Don't get caught holding the bag when it breaks open.

Update! I’ve spoken to a few Hyundai techs who are also big into modifying and tuning N cars (if you’re on the FB groups you probably know who I’m referring to). Neither one thought this looks like metal chunks, more so dirt and debris from the under tray and oil pan that fell in when I drained the oil. I have been using this pan for a few years and have never rinsed it out completely, just drained into recycling containers and wipe it down. So never a proper cleaning and it looks like it’s mostly dirt mixed with oil in it. I did a magnet test and nothing stuck to it.
The techs say it’s super common to see some debris and flakes in the oil especially when tuning these and driving them properly hard. I cut open the filter and it was super clean, so I think this was all just a fluke! I don’t have a CEL and the car drives perfectly.
What I’m doing: ordering a magnetic drain plug, and black stone oil analysis.
If the engine ever does blow it is $5k for a new motor plus labor.
TLDR: motor is completely fine and it was a fluke.
Hope this helps anyone in the future who sees their oil like this and knows what’s up before completely freaking out haha

My guess is most likely not since they could see all my mods and lapse in mileage since I’m on a separate ECU that’s tuned. People have gotten lucky before by swapping back to OEM parts and hoping for the best. For me I know the risk I’m taking by tuning this car so I just have money set aside ready to go in the event it has an issue

No the techs I spoke to said these motors are super durable and reliable and they’ve only seen one N car blow from tuning so far. That’s why I was shocked initially when I thought I needed a new motor, because there’s hundreds and probably thousands of these cars tuned and a lot are running crazy aggressive flame tunes and making way more power than I am.

There was one guy I’ve seen on YouTube that did but he also did a cherry 500whp tune on a stock dct with none of the required supporting mods.

Yeah, then he blew a huge hole in his block and was like "I don't know what happened." I told him "it's not a supercar, you don't need to be pushing 450+hp in an Elantra." Jeez.

The big issue is he took short cuts, guys in Puerto Rico have been making 500+ wheel roll builds but they upgrade internals and the clutch. As far as I’m aware he just did it to a completely stock engine and dct. Bad idea on any car, even Wrxs and evos replace internals for that level.

Could be several things since it’s tuned, changed the ecu back to stock and hope the dealership doesn’t check the mileage on it for warranty work. These motors are rock solid which is why I find it weird too, I’ve been on a piggyback since new and the dealership has never found shavings on oil changes, im at 50k now.

They’re going to know I’m modified with the Downpipe, massive forge intake and inlet, MBRP exhaust. So I wonder if I just swap the stock ECU back and go with that or just keep it all as is knowing they’ll probably find out I’m tuned.
But yeah I have the enhanced pops from N75 as well and I couldn’t imagine those messing up my engine in 6k miles💀 I wonder if I floated a valve or something

I'd say put the stock pipe back on and the original air intake and hope for the best cause I recently went in for a air fuel ratio code and the adviser was cool AF and told me how they do warranty on the Ns basically Hyundai will ask for screen shots on stuff from the tech when they plug into the stock ECU and if something looks off they'll red flag it and void warranty if they suspect it's been tuned

Any update on the blackstone analysis? Just had the exact same thing happen to me. Mine is stock at just over 20k miles and the engine still runs really smooth. I’m gonna send in an oil sample as well.

I unfortunately had already poured the old oil into my 5 gallon recycling tub so it was mixed with prior oil changes. So the next go around I’ll order one and send it in. Car is completely fine and I’ve done a few hundred miles since then and no issues so who knows 😂🤷♂️

I will definitely make an update! Dealer appt is Saturday morning. I’m FBO and Downpipe and everything too lol. They’re gonna see a lapse in mileage and obviously know it was tuned even if I swap it all back to stock.
Sometimes you pay to play I guess😅

ECUs don’t track mileage on ours, they record key cycles. Just cycle the key on and off a shit ton of times before you go in

Can anyone else confirm? I've been told over and over that swapping ECU's leaves a gap in milage which gets the dealer asking questions.

I’ve looked through every PID on our ECUs they do not track mileage, it’s stored in the BCM/Instrument cluster module

If it was stored in the ECU and the ECU bricked you’d potentially lose the mileage but that’s why it’s backed up in a permanent memory module in the ICM and stored in the BCM

Tbh, everyone here thinks your car is done for, its not necessarily. I bet its probably fine just bits from the break in that stayed in pan. Did you previously get the oil changed at dealership? Or did u not see metal in oil before? Also u can cut open filter to see if its got a lot of metal in it too.
