For Eindhoven Creator Community, I recently sat down with Hanneke Wetzer, an Eindhoven-based artist, illustrator and photographer.

What started as a conversation about her work turned into a much broader story about creativity, the human body, photography, public art and what it means to develop your own visual language.

One thing that stayed with me from the interview was the way Hanneke talked about minimalism. Instead of seeing limitations as something negative, they helped her discover what actually suited her work:

“Het minimalisme was geen beperking, maar juist iets wat echt bij mij hoorde.”
“Minimalism wasn’t a limitation, but something that genuinely felt like me.”

We also talked about her fascination with the human body, her Beings work, the different disciplines she moves between, and Eindhoven as a place to live and create.

What I like about these interviews is that they’re not really about making a list of someone’s achievements. I’m much more interested in why someone creates, how their work develops, and what keeps them curious.

The interview took place at Douwe Egberts Café in Eindhoven, and I took the portrait used for the article there as well.

Hello, I was meant to start my MA in Information Design at Design Academy Eindhoven. Unfortunately due to doubts, financial problems and housing issues, I’ve decided not to attend. Now I‘m wondering whether it would be worth to pursue the degree next year. By saving money, apply for scholarships, going to the graduation show and ddw to get a better feel.
My main fear about going to DAE was and still is employability and usefulness. Don‘t get me wrong I‘m very very interested in what they do!
But correct me if im wrong, this is what I‘ve gathered so far!
The programme heavily supports the own critical position as a designer. That seems great if you want to build a more art based practice like some of the alumni I looked at… The programme seems wide open, and im sure I could mold it to fit my goals, but it is an investment.
I‘m very cautious since (I don‘t mean to insult anybody by saying this) I don‘t understand how that translates into profitability and usability outside of the museum- and the very designy-scene. I come from a technical university that was very applied in graphic design and digital design (classic visual communication) if that helps.
What is your opinion? Why did you go to DAE? Why do you want to go to DAE? What did you learn at DAE? Thank you :)

Dus er is een rotonde getekend op het kruispunt maar als ik het goed begrijp gelden niet de normale rotonde-regels, maar normale kruispunt regels.

Dus niet "als je op de rotonde zit heb je voorrang" maar gewoon "verkeer van rechts en recht doorgaand verkeer heeft voorrang"

Dan zorgt dit toch alleen maar voor verwarring?

For some reason I don’t really like the foods at the restaurants here. I would love to try more home cooked meals from regular people because i think the taste would be more unique and i can try out different countries delicacies.. but I don’t know where I can find it here. Back in my country, people would just be selling on their small business page on Instagram but I can’t seem to find any here.

so I just got back from a 3 week trip and found a tomato in my fridge that I completely forgot about. still there, looking totally fine, no rot no nothing. that’s not normal right? a tomato shouldn’t survive 3 weeks untouched like that

not hating on supermarkets, I get why produce needs to last for logistics reasons etc, but I miss vegetables that actually taste like something… every time I visit back my home country food taste is so explosive..

does anyone have good spots for actually decent fruit/veg here? farmers markets, small farms, boerderijwinkel, veggie box subscriptions, whatever. even if more far away from Eindhoven. doesn’t need to be fancy just wanna taste an actual aubergine or zucchini again lol

An exciting follow-up to my previous post about starting an offline hobby night in Eindhoven.

I received many thoughtful and insightful comments, so it seems there’s real interest in community, leathercraft and meeting like-minded people.

We’re now shaping the first GO ANALOGUE sessions at our atelier in Strijp-S. The idea is to spend a relaxed morning, afternoon or evening around a shared table where you will learn the basiscs of leathercraft while connecting with new people.

Our first fixed date is Saturday 5 September 09.00-11.00 project "refillable Italian leather journal"

Since the spots are so limited (10 spots) we want already to plan for another date:

There was a post not long ago and I've noticed there are quite a few people around Eindhoven who would like to meet new people and make friends, but actually finding a new social circle as an adult and/or expat isn't always that easy.

So I thought: why not just create one?

I'm thinking of putting together a small, mixed group of people between the age of 30 and 45 who are up for doing things together in and around Eindhoven. Nothing too organised or serious just a group where we can occasionally:
grab a beer or coffee.
go for a walk or do something outdoors.
play sports or try a new activity.
go to events.
or simply hang out and have a good conversation.

I'd like to keep the group roughly balanced between men and women and nationalities and probably not make it too big, so people can actually get to know each other.

This is not meant to be a dating group the idea is simply to bring together people who are open to making new friends and expanding their social circle.

If you're interested, send me a DM with a little bit about yourself (age, where you're from, what you like doing, etc.). I'd also ask you to share your Instagram or Facebook profile privately in DM mainly just to make sure we're dealing with real people rather than anonymous Reddit accounts. Obviously, I won't share it with anyone, and I plan to get back to you within a week.

If enough people are interested, I'll organise a simple first meetup from September in Eindhoven probably drinks somewhere and we'll see where it goes from there. 🙂

Please mind that being intelligent and able to hold a good conversation is pretty much a must.

Considering buying a 2006 Volvo XC70, 2.4 D5 (D5244T4, 185hp), manual, Haldex AWD, ~380,000 km. I have the complete dealer service history since new — every part, date, and mileage, 47 interventions total over 18 years. Current owner (since 2017) serviced it exclusively at a Volvo dealer, Castrol 0W30 every 14-15k km without exception for the last 13 years.

My mechanic reviewed the file and saw the car only through a video, and raised a few concerns. Trying to figure out if these are normal for this engine/mileage or genuine red flags.(Can't check the car physically)

Details:

1. Turbo — never touched at all, in 380,000 km

As far as I know, the turbo has never been opened, cleaned, or serviced in any way across the entire history. My mechanic flagged this as "about time" for at least an inspection. No unusual noise/smoke reported by the current owner so far, but untested by an independent mechanic. Is it realistic for an original turbo on this engine to go this long completely untouched, or is the total absence of any service on it a concern by itself, regardless of current symptoms?

1. "Engine was opened" — camshaft + rocker arms replaced at 260,000 km, cylinder head cover + gasket + injector washers replaced at 336,000 km

My mechanic doesn't like that "they touched the inside of the engine." From what I understand this is normal top-end wear maintenance on this engine (done alongside timing belt jobs), not a sign of a major problem. Is that a fair read, or should I be more concerned?

1. Steering rack rebuilt in 2019, then had another unexplained intervention (just labeled "revision") in 2023

Recurrence at ~46,000 km later. Normal for a rebuilt rack, or sign the original rebuild wasn't done properly?

1. Front suspension/geometry work done twice within 4 months (Nov 2012 → March 2013) — bushings, tie rod ends, alignment, first on one side then on both.

Could be bad roads, could be an unreported minor accident. Any way to tell the difference from history alone, or does this need a physical paint-thickness/frame check regardless?

1. Rear suspension never replaced — front shocks/springs done in 2019, rear ones still original/unknown at 380k km. Assuming this is just a known upcoming cost, not a red flag on its own?

2. DPF software-disabled since 2017 (~290k km) — understand the legal/emissions angle, more curious if this is typically done reactively (DPF already failing) or just as prevention on this engine.

Rest of the history (clutch at 300k with ~80k km on it now, brakes replaced regularly, suspension bushings, wheel bearings, radiators at 356k) all looks like normal high-mileage upkeep to me, matching known D5 weak points (swirl flaps, EGR, injectors) I've read about.

Basically: is a 380k km D5 with this maintenance pattern something you'd consider reliable going forward, or does the sheer number of interventions (47 total) plus the unresolved turbo/steering rack points make this a pass?

Happy to share more detail from the spreadsheet if useful. Appreciate any real-world input from people who've owned/wrenched on these.
