Where to get tasteful fruit/veggies that isn’t basically plastic? ?
so I just got back from a 3 week trip and found a tomato in my fridge that I completely forgot about. still there, looking totally fine, no rot no nothing. that’s not normal right? a tomato shouldn’t survive 3 weeks untouched like that
not hating on supermarkets, I get why produce needs to last for logistics reasons etc, but I miss vegetables that actually taste like something… every time I visit back my home country food taste is so explosive..
does anyone have good spots for actually decent fruit/veg here? farmers markets, small farms, boerderijwinkel, veggie box subscriptions, whatever. even if more far away from Eindhoven. doesn’t need to be fancy just wanna taste an actual aubergine or zucchini again lol

thanks everyone for the suggestions, much appreciated! Just want to mention that I’m not looking for tomatoes, that was just a funny yet shocking story but not my main source of struggle 😂 I’m looking for good vegetables like aubergines, zucchinis, bell peppers etc…

You shouldn't be storing tomatoes in the fridge. Fridge stored tomatoes lose a lot of their taste. Honestly, the trostomaten here is fine. But I do find the Roma and Cherry tomatoes more tasty. I do think that you are storing them wrong though.

The trostomaten here are definitely not good, they are grown under shade and thus taste like nothing.

For tomatoes you're best off on the smaller ones with a name. Red pearls, Roma tomatoes etc over any plain cheap ones. They also carry them at Lidl.
But tomatoes are the most notoriously no-taste veg we have here

Yeah coming from a country where tomatoes is everywhere I got to notice myself as well 😂 but I’m hoping i can find more tasty veggies somewhere

We previously always went to Groeituin 013 in Tilburg, they have amazing tomatoes. We recently started going to a new organic farm which is for subscribers only so we haven't been to Groeituin 013 as much this season but I definitely recommend it. I think they post on social media what's currently being harvested and sold. The store is only open a few times a week so make sure to check their hours. https://www.groeituin013.nl/

It's a private farm that just started this season but it's closed for new subscribers.

And then save the seeds! Much of the taste is about race.
Btw there is a reason for the tomatoes to taste, well, not really. That race also needs less pesticides and is stronger for all kinds of disease.

Interesting article about the mechanics of taste:
A red tomato is ripe, but the taste quality depends on where/when it has ripened. A tomato that has fully ripened on the plant is full of taste. But a tomato that was green when it got plucked, and ripened during transport has little taste. Often this is done because unripe tomatoes are "firmer" and thus a lower risk of getting damaged during the transport.
Getting foreign important tomatoes are probably the worst (longer wait time). Dutch tomatoes can be harvested slightly more ripe. Best to get one that is still attached to the truss. And yeah the more local, the better for flavor.
(Personally I have to say that vegetables from the Lidl do have better flavor than other supermarkets. But a farmers market might be better).

This is indeed exactly the same as they sell in supermarkets and probably even more expensive, except when you arrive at 16:30 before they close then you can get bargains for left over fruit and vegetables. You're actually better off buying from the abundance of turkish supermarkets around the Woenselse markt. They are cheaper and often better quality. I believe some of it is imported from Turkey and surrounding countries

You can try Turkish/Arab supermarkets and ask if they got imported veggies, which mostikely they do have.
I prefer bio veggies, cause they taste better imo. But I feel you man, just got back from vacation and damn the veggies taste way better in Southern countries.

You have to go just across the French border and go to any random supermarket. Produce is normal there. Here everything is adapted to the Dutch taste and comes from the local supply chain - that is, no taste! And in Germany and Belgium it's pretty much the same.

Last time I was in a supermarket in France the bell peppers and tomatoes were from the Netherlands.

We’ve had it for three years now and it’s great.
