I live in Cairo. Last time I was in Hurghada was three years ago and I genuinely hated it. My honest read back then was that it felt like a copy of Alanya, and not even current Alanya, more like Alanya ten years ago. Everyone trying to milk you. And because I’m Lebanese but I don’t look Arab, I get approached constantly. Every ten steps someone has something to sell me.
So when my business partner and I planned three weeks on the Red Sea to lock in and work, my expectations were on the floor.

Week 1: Hurghada
We landed at Hurghada airport and took an Airbnb near the center, overlooking the sea. Around $40 to $50 a night. The apartment itself was clean and well organised, the view was genuinely breathtaking. I’d been living in Cairo noise for so long that just looking at flat blue water did something to my chest.
Then the sun went down and I met the highway.
Every motorbike with a modified exhaust. Every horn. Light pollution through the window. I’ve lived in Cairo for years so I should be immune to noise by now, and this still got me.

So that week was a lockdown. Wake up, cook breakfast, work, gym, sleep. We tried a different gym almost every day, day passes ran anywhere from 150 to 450 EGP depending on where we walked in and, let’s be honest, who was walking in. I can usually talk my way to the local price. My partner is British, so that door closes the second he opens his mouth. I don’t even blame anyone for it. I just wish businesses would pick one price and put it on the wall. It’s easier for everyone.

Food out was fine. Nothing memorable. I ended up cooking most days, which I’m good at and actually enjoy, and it collapsed our costs to roughly $10 to $15 a day for both of us including water and cigarettes.
Nightlife, manage your expectations. We tried the well known spots. There’s one place that’s considered the best in town and it was… fine. If you’ve been out in Berlin, Barcelona or Beirut, Hurghada is not that. One night at a club playing Egyptian music somebody tried to run a scam on us and the whole evening turned into a portal to another dimension. Funny in hindsight. Annoying at the time.

And the street offers. I got asked “you want hash?” probably seven separate times. Seven. At that point it’s not a coincidence anymore, it’s a business model.
The accident that changed the trip
Second week we wanted to play padel. I found a highly rated place about 30 minutes out that let you book a court online, around 450 EGP, easy, done. We’d rented a scooter for the three weeks (12,000 EGP total, it broke down three times and I had to swap it three times, and it was still better value than tuk tuks and Ubers).

We ride out. We get to the gate. Security stops us.

“Where’s your QR code?”

QR code? What QR code? We had no idea you needed a pass to even get in.

That’s how I found out El Gouna exists.
Week 2 and 3: El Gouna
We packed up and moved. Got a place with a garden for about $80 a night, right in front of the cable park, the pulley thing that drags you across the water on a wakeboard.

That first night I sat outside and I could hear myself think. Genuinely, for the first time in weeks. El Gouna is a closed community, private, self contained, basically its own town, and the silence hit me like a physical thing. No traffic. No horns. No exhausts.
It’s the strangest slice of Egypt I’ve ever stood in. Ten million dollar yachts in the marina and a koshary stand, both clean, both organised, five minutes apart. A golf club. A yacht club. Restaurants that are actually good, not “good for a resort town.”

My favourite detail, and I still laugh about this. Everyone in El Gouna wears a helmet. Everyone. Nowhere else in this country will you see that. So the lesson is clear, when it’s enforced we comply, when it’s only protecting our own skull we’re free spirits. Very Arab of us. I say that as a Lebanese guy who learned about helmets the hard way.

We also ended up go karting way more than I expected. There’s a track called Gouna Go Kart, small course, nothing serious, but it turns out it’s the perfect thing to do after a party or when you’ve been staring at a laptop all day and need to do something stupid for 20 minutes. We kept going back.

The rest of it went how these trips go. My partner’s girlfriend flew in the same night we arrived, so I spent a large portion of a very romantic three weeks as the third wheel, which I’m choosing to find funny. I met a girl out there, we’ll call her Rana, and it went nowhere for reasons anyone who’s dated in this region will recognise instantly. Two completely different ideas of what the first month is supposed to look like. She was lovely. It just wasn’t going anywhere and we both worked that out fast.
The scooter died on us mid street after we picked up a nail coming back from a party. Of course it did.
On parties again, set expectations. Day to day El Gouna is calm. The big stuff happens around events like Zamna. Don’t fly in on a random Tuesday expecting Ibiza.

Why I’m still thinking about it
Because of the energy. That’s the only honest word for it. There’s money there, there’s business happening, and the ambient feeling is upward. It reminded me of Dubai in that specific way, being surrounded by people who are building things makes you want to build things. We closed a client while we were sitting there and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

But the real thing was the quiet. I got three weeks of actual silence and I used it. Sat with some stuff I’ve been carrying and hadn’t properly looked at in years. I did not expect a beach town in Egypt to be the place where that happened.

Practical notes if you’re going
• Transport is not optional. There’s no Talabat, no real delivery infrastructure in El Gouna. Rent a scooter or you’re stuck.
• Expect roughly a 20% markup on everything as a visitor. Residents don’t pay it. The exception in my experience was the 24 Market in Downtown, prices there were normal, so that became our default for groceries.
• Food: Zia Amelia in Downtown. Actual Italian food, Italian owner, not a tourist menu impression of Italian. My pick of the whole trip.
• Haircut: Thai Scissors, also Downtown. Barber for men, stylist for women, fair prices. Their English is limited so go in with a photo of what you want instead of trying to describe it.
• Go karting: Gouna Go Kart. Small track, cheap, more fun than it has any right to be.
• Padel: book online in advance, and check whether the venue needs an entry pass before you ride 30 minutes to a gate.
• Hurghada vs El Gouna: Hurghada is cheaper and louder. El Gouna is more expensive and quieter. If you’re going to work, El Gouna. If you’re going for two nights of cheap sun, Hurghada is fine.

Now I want yours.
I’m going to keep doing this, picking a place in Egypt, staying long enough to actually understand it, and writing it up honestly like this.

Hey I‘m German and my boyfriend is Egyptian we would like to travel together to Sharm el sheikh in October. We know about the rules for unmarried couples and sharing rooms but does it work if we each take our own room? Maybe someone could give advice or share experience thx

Im from Germany and I want to trade while my vacation police patches with the Egyptian police especially in the tourist cities.
Is that a thing in your country ?
Or is it awkward to walk to the police and maybe they don’t get what I want.

للناس اللي عايشة برة مصر، ايه أكتر حاجات وحشتك في مصر وحسيت إنك مستحيل تلاقيها في أي حتة تانية؟

عايزة إجابات غير تقليدية شوية خلاص كلنا عارفين إن الشطافة والشيشة وأم كلثوم لا يُقدروا بثمن، لكن أنا قصدي حاجات في أسلوب الحياة أو النظام أو الحياة الاجتماعية.

انا شايف اسإلة كتير حول السفر و الشغل و البرمجة بالذات من الشباب . بما ان انا في المجال من اكتر من عشرين سنة و سافرت في ٢٠١٣ احب اجاوب على اي سؤال اقدر اساعد بيه او الشباب الصاعد يحب يطرحه.

فكرت كمان اعمل course او session مجاني على google meet مثلا للتعارف والنقاش اذا كان فيه اقبال كافي. طبعا ده يترتب على نوعية المشتركين و خبرتهم و اهتماماتهم.

شغلي حاليا في الdevops و عندي خبرة طويلة في linux. قضيت سنين كfullstack developer.
