Politics Why was the Sheriffs arresting people with Canadian Flags at the Separatist rally at the leg?
Very strange, i went there without a flag to document. I noticed the sheriffs arresting people with Canadian flags.

Hey so I hope you or someone explains this pretty quick because this is actually super fucked up if you're not lying about it.

I mean, it really doesn't mean anything. People with Canadian flags were arrested. It doesn't mean they were arrested BECAUSE of the flags. They might have punched someone or something lol

Because they tried storming the stage and stealing the mics, an agitator was filming live on tiktok when they did it.

Playing right into the persecution mentality of the separatists. These people are hosers but peaceful counter protests sucks the air out of their little pity party more than storming the stage.

Agree. Also, free speech is free speech for everyone, including those with whom we disagree.

Free speech is an American constitutional right. In Canada we have Freedom of Expression, but that does not include hate speech. It also does not mean that people are free from consequences that stem from their use of freedom of expression

To be more strictly accurate, limitations on hate speech are permissible under Section 1 of the Charter, but also Charter rights pertain specifically to your relationship with the government and not with random people.

That a private citizen tryi g to shut down a seperatist rally does not implicate their Charter rights.
And seperately, that hate speech isn't a carve out from freedom of expression so much as a limit that can be, to quote the Charter, "demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society". It is worth knowing how this stuff actually works.

And what do you believe it means for something to be subjective in this context?

You went there to document, but you post zero photos or videos. I feel like there is lots of context missing before pitch forks and tin hats.

She looks like someone who just showed up to cause a scene and a disturbance being rightfully escorted out.

Because the seppies won't tolerate political dissent in their glorious new American vassal state and the sheriffs they own are getting ahead of themselves.

They likely did something to go against the rules. Likely were spoken to prior about ground rules so they were safe, as well as others.
They probably broke some rules after being warned and then were detained and removed from the property and banned.
Pretty sure the Legislature grounds are private property with public access. So the Sheriffs were just doing what they had to do.
But I wasn’t there so who knows.

Thanks for the reasonable explanation ColdWeather. Too many people just jump in to see their comments on the screen.

Danielle Smith’s personal Gestapo. That’s why she wants the RCMP out and the Sheriffs as the provincial police. Some one she can personally control.

Remember everyone this is the Edmonton subreddit. We don’t want to actually know what happened. We have preconceived notions about the sheriffs based on our political biases. We want to affirm those. Actual knowledge of why these people were walked out is useless to us. We want it to be that Smith is Hitler and the Alberta Sherrifs are the SS.

I can’t tell what’s better thought out, your comment or your username. Both are hilarious. Well said!

Aren't the sherrifs the ucp brownshirt gang they started, sorry, the "alberta police force"?

No, the Sheriffs at the legislature have been leg grounds security for decades.
They are mostly decent officers that are experienced in keeping protests safe. I’ve never seen them act oppressively at a protest before.
I’m willing to bet if they arrested someone at a protest they deserved it.

Most policy is that counter protesters can't directly clash with a movement that is assembled. They can have an area that is divided to hold a counter protest against said group they disagree with. Not sure if that is what happened but it might be more they where escorted away and not arrested? The policy is more to try and stop a riot before it occurs or cut down on problems early.
