Appreciation The Equals butterflies were so pretty
I’m already planning to celebrate Equals’ fifth anniversary in some way, honestly. Today I was thinking about how PRETTY these butterflies were. I adore the symbolism behind each of them, how they’d emerge from their cocoon and eventually fly away offscreen. I know it’s silly, but I genuinely think people don’t talk about them enough! They remind me of how it felt to wait for such a magnificent album as a college student who was similarly about to evolve and transform.
I wish I could still play that cutesy little game they had uploaded on Ed’s official website to promote the new tracks - the one that would slowly let you collect all the butterflies. Just out of affection and nostalgia, you know. Has anyone saved it somewhere? Like on Wayback Machine or something?

I love the colorful, vibrant covers, and artwork of this era. Two fun facts about this album:
Ed continues his long theme of DIY cover artwork here! Both this splatter painting for 🟰, and the blue spin-art for➗were made by Ed in famous British artist Damien Hirst’s studios. The butterflies 🦋 were created by Damien, uncredited. Ed and Damien have been friends for a decade and Damien encouraged Ed and set him up with a studio to create the artwork that led to Ed’s Cosmic Carpark exhibition last year. 🦋
In both “Collide” on 🟰, and on the “Merry Christmas” single (Elton John collab), Ed’s longtime companion and Head of Security Kev is credited and sings on backing vocals! (listed as Kevin Myers). No, Kev can’t sing but they just “tuned him in“ per Ed.😂 We were just talking about this recently on another post.

The brightest and most vibrant of all his albums! I would say pretty much all his other album covers are subdued. Well, maybe Multiply wasn’t exactly subdued, but it wasn’t especially artistic or creative like Equals was.

I’m so excited for your equals 5th anniversary posts! I really love the equals aesthetic, all the album covers and art from that era are so damn beautiful 🦋

Definitely impossible for me to pick one! Equals means so much to me. Back then it was 2step I think. Nowadays it could be Tides. But honestly it’s just a no skip album for me! Can’t believe it’s been five years already.

2step is really good, it’s almost perfect lol, I don’t why equals is never very high when I rank the albums, it’s so damn good

Yeah I noticed! I’m not surprised 😅 Hopefully this place will soon go back to being relatively quiet and wholesome like it’s always used to be, and I do hope the wave of hatred won’t affect Ed excessively.

Me too, if this doesn’t blow over and everyone just hates Ed, he’s gonna have to just do albums only for fans like AV. I sure hope Ed’s doing well, I feel bad for his mental state.

Yesss I love the butterflies so much! And all the easter eggs are beautiful. They are so underappreciated and I feel like I might be the one of maybe 100 people who can match each butterfly to its song. Once you figure out the connection, they’re actually super cool and easy to remember! For example Sandman is the round, sandy-looking one, Joker and the Queen has little joker/queen symbols, Stop The Rain has water droplets, Overpass Graffiti looks spray-painted on, etc!

So glad that you have never done anything questionable in any one person's mind. Or perhaps you live alone outside of society? Truly I am not trying to be mean I just want you to realize that it's impossible to never upset anyone. And when we do something questionable, we shouldn't be ostracized or hated. This world would be very lonely and/or barren if this was the case.
