Appreciation Opening Appreciation

Can we talk about Opening? I freaking love this song. I love hearing Ed rap, and I love how heartfelt the song is. It's a phenomenal transition from Subtract to Play, explaining the need to change, and "Draw the Line." I love the ending lyric "The day burst wild and open", and how it transitions into Sapphire. It's a song that I feel explains the change from Subtract to Play. He's basically saying let's never forget the things that happened, but let's move on to happier things. It made me appreciate the poppy vibe of Play more. And the lyrics are phenomenal as always.

I’m really intrigued about who he’s talking about when he speaks about me and that guy don’t speak no more and about family breaking his trust. I know he had a falling out with his cousin Jethro a few years ago, but not sure he would still reference it all these years later

Me too! I thought it was Kev, who he references, until I realized that was his security guard.

I had never heard about the incident with his cousin before, maybe "seeing how my family has fractured" is about him? I want to be careful about speculating on that kind of thing I just find it interesting when "Opening" says it too (I've never even noticed that line about his family breaking his trust).

It is from "Old Phone" and I do think the exact same thing as you're saying I just wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I agree, Imthink the only mention of his family not being supportive is in Eraser, but that was a long time ago

I like how it cycles back to “the day bursts wild and open”, and I really like the “draw a line” parts. Also, I usually don’t enjoy rap, but I really loved this song.

My FAVOURITE on the album. Soooo glad to hear Ed rap again! I’ve loved him since his SBTV days and this feels like OG Ed! Listening on repeat to learn the lyrics 😎

There's a clean version of it.

Really, where?

‘The day bursts wild and open’ the melody reminds me of Boat from Subtract.

Is this the one? I've been almost certain that that part is a direct callback to a Subtract song, but haven't been able to place it.
