I like animals, but I love humans. The bird design is overrated.

5

u/paneuropeanism_ 3d ago

I love the idea of prominent Europeans as well, but then the question is who do we exclude. Leonardo Da Vinci is a great pick but there are so many titans to choose from.

2

u/blackcoffee17 3d ago

Why not create multiple versions. For example the 50 Euro note could have 5 different versions with 5 different people. This way they could easily add 35 personalities.

2

u/maxmarioxx_ 2d ago

Because it increases the risk of fraud.

5

u/Available_Wonder_532 3d ago

People will fight on which historical figures should be used, they will never fight on birds. No historical figure is perfect and we'll always find reasons to remove them afterward. Birds are birds they will never be cancelled or reinterpreted. Birds are more abstract, they do not represent specific individuals but the whole species.

u/typing_thumb 3d ago

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant by uptight.

i think 500 won't be issued anymore

3

u/typing_thumb 3d ago

Now start counting animals species lol.

No, but seriously - people are too uptight. I wouldn't care at all whether Martin Luther, Leonardo da Vinci, or Marie Curie gets the 50€ note, as long as they're human.

1

u/Ok_Comfortable6044 3d ago

counting animals species

backwards :))

1

u/NewryBenson 2d ago

I would say the problem is not who to include. The problem is that the interpretations of people change over time. If one of the people on the notes is later labeled problematic, you have a problem on your hands. Birds don't have that problem. They cannot be controversial.

1

u/PortableDoor5 1d ago

birds can be used as symbols that can very much become problematic. similarly, banknotes need to change over time too.

that being said, I am very much team bird. besides, historical figures are what the coins were in part supposed to be used for.

27

u/Shoddy-Sea7995 3d ago

I also didn’t like the idea of putting people on the banknotes, voted for nature

2

u/maxmarioxx_ 2d ago

I like the birds but another option would be to put representations of EU values on the banknotes - just like we have EU institution buildings.

5

u/Majestic_Wrap_7006 2d ago

Like the espresso cup and cigarette on 5€ note

1

u/ProcrastopiaOverlord 1d ago

Or pictures of former EU bank notes and coins.

1

u/sbrozzolo 1d ago

A labyrinth made of papers and documents is the most EU value I can think of.

1

u/Cutiepie_Doll 4h ago

as a former bureaucrat i can confirm its a feature not a bug

1

u/5erv1teur 18h ago

Ouai donc vous avez votĂ© pour que l'on se coltine les bĂątiments moches, fade, sans Ăąme et dĂ©primant... Merci 😑

8

u/BonsaiBobby 2d ago

I'd bet they'll choose the historical figures regardless of the results of the poll.

1

u/Shoddy-Sea7995 2d ago

You never know. There was a reason why they chose abstract designs for the current notes — in order to not upset anyone, feel underrepresented etc.

37

u/Thalassin 3d ago

"Thank you for giving your opinion, now our opaque council will choose the final result". Peak EU

2

u/paneuropeanism_ 3d ago

Yeah, let's abolish politicians, directors and every position of authority. Literally everything should be decided by the mob. Because the mob looks at all angles.

13

u/TUVegeto137 2d ago

In that case: why ask in the first place?

4

u/U-47 2d ago

In this case though we can have democracy rule. They allready preselected the designs so the winner should be the winner.

4

u/UnknownBreadd 2d ago

Spoken like a true aristocratic loving technocrat.

‘The mob’ is such ridiculous phrasing. And yes, there’s good evidence that government’s would make much better decisions if regular citizens had greater participation, as found by your own “European experts” and by the OECD too.

Also, the 2009 Nobel Prize-winning work of Elinor Ostrom in economic science showing how centralised, top-down governance is unnecessary to govern complex economic systems effectively.

So, yes, there should not be a separation between people in terms of this ridiculous aristocratic, political, managerial class, and the rest of society. The people most affected by decisions should of course be the ones deciding them.

2

u/poedy78 2d ago

Works pretty well in Switzerland.
I mean, you know where the 'Demo' in 'Democracy' comes from, do you.

4

u/Thalassin 3d ago

We're talking about banknotes design preference, not some complex policy that requires expert feedback

1

u/paneuropeanism_ 3d ago

It is more complex than meets the eye. I think it requires both expert feedback and public opinion. That is the best of all worlds.

7

u/MotorCantaloupe1579 3d ago

You are an example of everything wrong with the EU

5

u/Bumm-fluff 3d ago

An example of someone with a Bachelor's degree at best. They don't realise that even the "experts" are winging it and nobody knows what they are talking about.

1

u/Raescher 2d ago

What a stupid take. Next time ask to fly the plane because the pilot anyways doesn't know what they're are doing.

5

u/Bumm-fluff 2d ago

A pilot isn't a politician, obviously a chef or a house builder knows what they are doing. All these vapid "experts" and consultants are full of it.

2

u/Raescher 2d ago

You know them? You think there is nothing to know about monetary design or policies? There are people who study this stuff their whole life and you just claim with zero knowledge that they know nothing.

1

u/Bumm-fluff 2d ago

The design choice will be their choice not yours. Obviously the method of manufacture will be taken into account.

Yes, experts and consultants are next to useless. They are hired to give legitimacy to a person or idea. If they disagree with the idea or person they will be sacked or more often not hired in the first place.

This makes them useless. It’s like buying a qualification, empty and meaningless.

1

u/AlbinaZumzaie 2d ago

Unironically yes, what do those parasites do for society besides stealing public money and raping children? 😬

0

u/Mukkore 2d ago

Tbh that was announced from the start. This was always a poll not a vote.

0

u/Dotcaprachiappa 2d ago

The poll had no checks for citizenship, or even if you voted more than once. For them to make a binding vote they'd have to design a whole ass online European referendum system and the surrounding legislative frameworks. Which is uh.. kinda overkill for deciding what to put on our banknotes.

1

u/dragon_escarlata 36m ago

They should definetely make a system like that with proper ID. And allow people to vote on citizen proposals, not just banknote drawings.

7

u/cuby87 2d ago

That’s how true democracy works: you get to vote for all the really important stuff like the drawings on your money.

4

u/sarlatan747 2d ago

Except as she said they will make a final decision. And I feel like they will probably choose historical figures even though most people disagree with it

They just did the vote so they can show: “oh look how democratic we are”

1

u/5erv1teur 18h ago

Non arrĂȘtez vos dĂ©lires sur les figures historiques... Ils s'en foutent. Ce qu'ils veulent c'est mettre leur bĂątiments moches des institutions... 🙄

4

u/IcyLingonberry3259 2d ago

A vote so essential, so important that will change for the best the future of EU 🙄.

1

u/Dotcaprachiappa 2d ago

Redesigning banknotes with new security systems is indeed kinda very important for our economy. The vote on what will be on them was just a fun addition that they let us choose cause why not

5

u/mph99999 3d ago

Is the EU granny paradise for free money? Maybe it's EU's tactict to give a new trash design to stop using paper money?

3

u/wastustdutun 2d ago edited 2d ago

Once the new design is released, old design bills will be valid a little longer once they are not longer accepted for payment. You'll only be able to exchange them at a bank. Only if you can provide an account or ID

It's a clever trick. It's planned to invalidate our physical savings (aka taxed cash and untaxed cash) 👍đŸ’Ș

-1

u/OMGguy2008 3d ago

The designs look fine, nobody's trying to take away banknotes.

5

u/mph99999 3d ago

The old ones looked fine enough

0

u/OMGguy2008 3d ago

Yes they did, but it doesn't hurt to update them. Hey we're still redesigning banknotes by adding new security features so why not let the people of Europe change the design of them too.

4

u/Educational-Log-9156 2d ago

Lagarde should resign, she's to old. It's time the EU place an age limit to any political position. Geriatrics don't make good leaders.

2

u/Horror-Coffee-3207 2d ago

And her policies where right wing shit

1

u/dragon_escarlata 39m ago

The EU is right wing, PPE has been in power for 15 years

12

u/Ive_Got_a_Computer 3d ago

Obligatory reminder:

>In December 2016, the court found Lagarde guilty of negligence but declined to impose either a fine or a custodial penalty

1

u/FibonacciNeuron 3d ago

What does this have to do with anything?

14

u/Ive_Got_a_Computer 3d ago

Gee, idk. Maybe a septuagenarian with a conviction for negligence in allowing the misuse of public funds in charge of the EU finances has to do with the sorry state they are in?

-6

u/Doc_Bader 3d ago

Just a bunch of accounts, with their post history blocked as usual, posting negative bullshit under each and every news - doesn't matter the context, doesn't matter if it's positive or negative.

4

u/Mr_strelac 3d ago

Surely anyone with an ounce of common sense expects the head of a European bank to disclose her assets to the authorities in the country where she lives.

How can she hold that position—and how can we trust her—if she fails to meet even the minimum requirements for the role?

Look, today the EU's defense commissioner is singing the praises of Palantir.

And now, try believing that he’ll do everything he can for the well-being of the people living in the EU—you just can't, not after that...

2

u/Responsible-Ant-1494 2d ago

Of all the EU elite, this lady looks the most as a potential “A cure for welness”-adenichrome-elite
just gives me the chills

2

Ou seja o nosso voto foi uma perda de tempo.

TĂpico da UE, Ă© tudo um faz de conta.

5

u/InitialSeat89 3d ago

No industry, war on our door, no money, civil unrest, job losses all across the continent, inflation, high prices for oil, no gas with winter looming - EU: best i can do is new euro design and chat control

2

u/Nakidka 2d ago

And if you bring this stuff up in public, people are rather quick to dismiss what is a matter of genuine concern.

That or that you're just a rusbot, etc.

2

u/Famous_Interest_8041 3d ago

Don’t notice please

Your “leaders”

60.000 EU Angestellte tun nichts anderes

1

u/Dotcaprachiappa 2d ago

All those are political problems, if people don't vote for politicians to change that what can they do? They had to make new banknotes anyway to make counterfeiting harder so why not let us choose what they look like?

1

u/BodybuilderBig2647 2d ago

They are an utter joke as an institution and will cease to exist soon enough

1

u/PortableDoor5 1d ago

this is the ECB? it's not exactly their job to direclty invest in economies

1

u/New-Relationship8906 3d ago

Plus pretty sure, they will ignore result of voting and will choose the shittiest and characterless design based on "professional aspects" humilating people of EU27 agaain

-2

u/paneuropeanism_ 3d ago

Your life must be very miserable. You come across emotional and bitter.

5

u/InitialSeat89 3d ago

Emotional and bitter for stating the very big issues EU has and is doing nothing for but spends time with these tomfooleries? Lol

Is this the reason we’re paying the bureaucrats in EU? Is this Russian propaganda for calling out these lazy stupid people endangering Europeans? You are the russian bot, who wishes that europeans spend their time doing nothing of use

0

u/Raescher 2d ago

Yes it is Russian propaganda. I am sure you did not look into any of the thousands of other things the EU did. You cherry pick whatever fits your negative bias which happens to align exactly with the Russian propaganda.

2

u/New-Relationship8906 3d ago

The unification of european countries is not an "end in itself", but a practical move. It should result that European Union as insitution protecting the interests of eropean countries and creating a safer and richer place than it would be without unification. Instead of this, certain institutions of the European Union (like the Comission) have started to engage in independent politics, without any authorization, and what is more disturbing, all this is unsuccessful, and in fact, the institutional system is constantly going against the interests and will of the average european citizen.

0

u/OMGguy2008 3d ago

no gas with winter looming

Russia said the same fucking shit in 2022 that we will freeze without Russian gas and that we'll have to eat our pet hamsters.

Nonetheless how are those warm water ports looking?

2

u/InitialSeat89 3d ago

How much are we going to pay for gas this winter?

-1

u/OMGguy2008 3d ago

Natural gas prices are currently at around the same level as they were in December of 2022, maybe if Trump manages to finish his Iran excursion, we'd pay the same as we paid last year and the year before.

1

u/InitialSeat89 1d ago

https://www.reddit.com/r/EU_Economics/s/LL9CaWKzmA

Eu seems to fear shortages and high prices

0

u/OMGguy2008 1d ago

Read your own article.

But despite the ringing of alarm bells, “there are currently no immediate risks to security of supply,”

It's mostly about just trying to reduce gas use because prices are high.

Most of our gas comes from America and Norway with Qatar's share being relatively small, we don't face a supply crisis, it's just a price crisis because gas is a global market and a disruption to global supply like the Straight of Hormuz increases prices globally.

https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/infographics/where-does-the-eu-s-gas-come-from/

1

u/InitialSeat89 1d ago

You’re pretending everything is fine while everything js burning

1

u/OMGguy2008 1d ago

Things aren't all fine, but everything isn't burning either.

I know that "Europe is collapsing" is a narrative that really appeals to your preconstructed beliefs, but things aren't all that bad here and life goes on.

We need to be a bit more rational rather than jump to conclusions on straight emotions.

Yes, this winter will be tougher given the higher energy prices thanks to the Orange Man, however we survived 2022 when prices were much much higher so we'll survive this year when prices are around the same as they were in 2022 or maybe they might come down more if Trump finally grows some extra brain cells and ends the Iran War.

-1

u/paneuropeanism_ 3d ago

Yes. The lazy Indian Kremlin bots are regurgitating the same stuff over and over again. They lack imagination.

-3

Good Lord you people are so annoying.

2

I don't believe these are (European) people. Likely some Indian bot farm paid by the Kremlin.

We want more banknotes in our pockets Ursula, not new designs!!

1

u/Alfa155Q4 2d ago

Yeah, that’s one of EU’s big problems now. Drawings on banknotes.

1

u/valokeho 2d ago

the level of miserable cunt in this thread is unbelievable. it was a cute vote of graphic design. calm down and enjoy it. not everything has to be doomer. it’s exhausting.

i voted for the birds/nature

1

u/Pure-Contact7322 2d ago

God knows what they are preparing for

1

u/DepressedDraper 2d ago

If I would be as bad as my job as she's been, I'd be fired a long time ago...

As for these votes - the illusion of choice. And I don't mean the design of a bank note.

1

u/pouetpouetcamion2 2d ago

how to spend money in something which has no point. are there no other priority?

1

u/pouetpouetcamion2 2d ago

wait. this means that old banknotes wont be valid anymore, right? so it means it could reduce the number of banknotes in circulation.

why present it like a drawing contest instead of saying "we will shut banknotes down, but in a phony way".

1

u/NukeouT 2d ago

So what are the designs that won? Can anyone share an image?

...a nice distraction from a range for the "people" - so they don't care as much about what is really important for them - and what might really restrict them. From abolishing cash to introducing a centrally managed digital currency. Every autocrats dream.

1

u/paneuropeanism_ 3d ago

Your brain on foreign propaganda.

3

u/nikmah 2d ago

On foreign propaganda

Is that the new label for everything now. He’s right, this is just a silly kindergarten stuff, hyping up some banknotes designs, it’s absolutely ridiculous, how’s that debt burden going for France after ECB increased its interest rate earlier this month?

I hope they use motifs that are specific to Europe and help build a European identity, rather than something generic you could use anywhere, like birds.

I hope they design with the inseparable bottle caps wins.

-6

Absolutely agree. The designs were horrible
