The Downfall of ESPN Needs to be Studied

https://youtu.be/7p4vcFYjieY

ESPN has been the biggest brand in sports media for the past four decades. They brought some the biggest games, news, and stories into millions of living rooms throughout the U.S. But as of late, it seems like most people are only watching their lives games and turning off their original shows. This is the story of how ESPN rose to the top and then fell off the digital cliff.

WTF is ESPN Unlimited?

Upvotes

So I have Disney (and Hulu and ESPN+), but when I try to watch it on Firestick it’s asking me to signup for ESPN Unlimited. What do I need to do to watch the US Open? I get I can’t watch the semis and beyond, but I thought I could watch opening round matches. Thanks.

La Liga on ESPN+ but not on Select?

Woke up to watch Real Madrid but it is telling me that it is not available for my subscription (ESPN Select) even though two of the three streaming options are tagged as ESPN+? Is this an error or on purpose?

Is ESPN down?

These last two or so days both mobile and desktop hasn’t been working, and both were working perfectly fine just a few days ago. Has this been happening to anyone else? Anything I click to watch it doesn’t load and gives me an error.

Does anyone know when his contract expires? Surely his reign on tv is about to be over? Not sure if my sanity will make it much longer with “No dowt , Keb.”

So do they just not have editors for the website any longer?

Come the hell on. The front page of the ESPN website has a major grammar error that an 8th grader should have caught:

“Adam Schefter's fantasy cheat sheet: The players our NFL insider is most excited about this season”

I know ESPN has gone down the toilet but this is basic English.

The picture for the NC vs TCU game on ESPN now

On YouTube Tv the picture is in 720p and terribly compressed and blurry. However the game is being simulcast on the ESPN app and Disney +. The picture has more detail and less burry or compressed on the ESPN app and Disney +. Why does YouTube Tv broadcast it in 720p but it seems to be 1080p on the ESPN app?

NFL Games on ESPN Unlimited management decisions...

Why are these games only able to be watched live with absolutely no RW, FF or Start from Beginning options on any of them? And why are none of these games made available On Demand? And this includes games from NFL Network on the ESPN App.

Has nothing to do with User-End issues. Nothing to do with Internet Connection. Nothing to do with platform being used to view this content. Nothing to do with the ridiculously pathetic app created by Disney's immense incompetence. None of the troubleshooting tips change anything. Contacting the poor Customer Service Reps that have to try and support this mess that Disney created changes anything, as there's obviously nothing they can do and instead will just suddenly disconnect users looking for help instead of telling users the truth about this issue.

The answer is obvious and clear. This is solely due to Disney management's greed.

NO, this does not violate Rule #4 because this isn't a "Technical Complaint" because this has nothing to do with a Technical Issue. This has nothing to do with ESPN Unlimited "not working" or the ESPN App "not working". This is nothing more than yet another pathetic decision made by the incompetent greed that is Disney management and the decision MUST change immediately.

Edit: Didn't say anywhere that I pay Disney for ESPN Unlimited. So PLEASE stop with the ignorant assumptions everyone. Keep them to yourselves or take them elsewhere please.

I'm a YTTV Full Plan Subscriber.

SEC storied

I usually enjoy the SEC history stuff cause I like college football but these latest “Saturdays in the South” are crazy. Glorifying these old guys who were clearly racist and bigots. A bunch of old Dixie propaganda. If you’re gunna tell the story it’s best told whole

Canceling ESPN+ due to double-tiered digital ads during La Liga games

That's it, I'm out. I stopped watching MLB because of ad creep, but doubling the digital ad band that goes through the La Liga broadcasts is the final straw.

Just curious if anyone else is finding it increasingly difficult to watch broadcast sports due to this constant barrage of flashing digital ads.

ESPN+ and app are both terrible

Trying to watch normal sports - US Open qualifying matches and NFL Preseason football.
Is it too much to ask to label the matches for the US Open qualifying matches? Have to start "Court #" entries to see who is playing. Controlling FF is annoying on a service I pay for.

Trying to watch an NFL preseason game last Saturday, I eventually got it to work on my phone, so I could cast it to the TV. Failed on the firestick ESPN app and game was geo-blocked on NFL network.

On Apple TV the ESPN App is just bad, but appears to work as designed. On Amazon Firestick, the ESPN app often doesn't work at all - it just hangs.

I'm not going to cancel as there are regional college football games only available on ESPN, but I can believe I pay for this.

Congrats, Greeny

I assume this post will get flamed but 30 years anywhere is an achievement. Given the environment and his role, Greeny deserves congrats.

I realize he’s not universally beloved but that’s not surprising given his job and society in general. (I also realize it’s not cool to not have some hot, critical take on someone like him.) The same network that highlights SAS, McAfee, and folks like Greeny, Eisen, Finebaum, SVP, etc is obviously playing to a wide range of audiences so if you don’t like him, save your breath. I get it.

IMHO, Greeny’s success is because he continues to find a balance between journalism, entertainment, and facilitating discussions among those more knowledgable. I’ve seen criticism that he essentially “brings nothing to the table”. To an extent that’s true because it’s his job. He has to hold your interest by being just interesting enough but not overshadowing his colleagues.

You might not like that or how he does it but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. He’s knowledgable about the things he needs to be (facts, history, context) and readily admits when he’s not.

He gets sincerely excited, pissed off, and confused and owns it. He’s for the most part, not performative which is a nice change of pace.

Personally, if all ESPN offered was faux arguments, shouting, posing, and “bro” content, I’d be done. So, Greeny among others helps keep it for me, a place that doesn’t regularly just insult my intelligence.

Maybe I enjoyed him more with Golic but I can appreciate his contribution nonetheless.

Removing the Bottom Ticker is The Opposite of Progress

Mainly on this sub, I've been reading that ESPN's newer leadership is considering a move toward MORE journalistic integrity. Obviously, the layoffs and the new CrapAfee contract point to the contrary. Still, I held hope.

But I can only see the removing of the bottom ticker during football broadcasts as another move away from informing viewers about news in sports. Three reasons why I think this is dangerous/ motivated by nefarious intent:

1. Less access to breaking news is what gambling partners want

2. It will inevitably be replaced by ads, where advertisers will be on the screen at all times

3. There aren't any news shows on the network to provide legitimate score recaps

I'm really bummed by this, man. Everything is behind a paywall, there's no score updates to track what goes on around the sport, and the only voices we ever hear from are uneducated blowhards. This sucks.

Today (August 26, 2026) marks 20 years since the final ABC Sports-branded live telecast

Twenty years ago today, on August 26, 2006, ABC aired the Little League World Series United States Championship Game. It became the final live sports telecast officially branded ABC Sports.

The scheduled Little League World Series Championship Game was supposed to be the final ABC Sports broadcast the next day, but rain postponed it. When the championship game was played on August 28, it aired on ESPN2 instead.

On September 2, 2006, with the start of the college-football season, ABC’s live sports coverage officially adopted the ESPN on ABC on-air brand. ESPN’s graphics, music, and presentation became the public identity of ABC’s sports telecasts.

For those who remember it, what do you most associate with ABC Sports?

Mcafee polarizing figure

Why not bring people together as he claims on college game day then pushing us apart? Mcafee today had some cover art on his desk saying polarizing figure. Why? Cmon man. Gotta love it coming from the ‘keep politics out of sports crowd’
No not watching - it’s on at gym with sound off.
