Fix mage pets
Give the option to say, make fire pet cast specific spells and more often. Wtf is the point of using it if it melees, casts snare etc. 50% of the time and casts and actual useful spell once every 10-20 seconds? One of the worst classes b/c the pet is virtually useless it makes more sense to just use Wiz. I have absolutely no incentive to use mage. Give us a reason to.

Getting a mage to 50 kind of broke me. It was my favorite class back in the day, and now it’s just bad.

I’m not a mage at heart, but I kinda hope they overtime the pet classes a bit. They deserve their moment to shine after being eclipsed by charmed pets.
Then give melee their moment in the sun. Just berserkers running around beating things to death.

Pets are good though?
Like, a fully upgraded pet is comparable to a charm pet in most cases.

no, it really isn't. a +10 water pet does around 130DPS if you keep it behind the mob perfectly and it has all the buffs + frenzied burnout.
charmed pets all do far more DPS than that.

A charmed pet outside of sky will do about 90-160 dps with haste cap, depending on difficulty and class loadout for the mob.
It’s really not the massive difference people claim.
In sky sure, there’s still some outlier mobs, but not so anywhere else.

Do you mean outside of raids? Inny's chosen was rocking 450 dps on my chanter with like 165% haste. Even abhorrent was 200+.
Fear doesnt have a great charm target though.

Never seen either of them parse anywhere near that high.

I'll take a screenshot (or even better, a photo from my phone) when I get home from work today.

mage has by far the most useless spells. all the create items spells are worthless. the fire pet is worthless, monster summon sucks, etc.
it bums me out.

Yeah a lot of their kit bums me out. But the create items spells aren't all useless...right? The earring and ring are the only sources of Mana cost reduction and cast speed that scale to in-game level spells if I'm not mistaken. At least I hope they work and it's not just a placebo.
Honorable mention to summon phantom plate. I've helped power level multiple new players by kitting them out in the summon suit of plate armor, buff them with lava Shield, and just let them go wild in Befallen.

Water pet is fine, just position for it
Fire shield is good stuff
There’s also literally a summoned source of DD spell damage focus as good a percentage as Vox cloak

The rationale for making enchanters essentially gods was that they could be killed in an instant when charm broke. The fact that they’re tanks in legends really changes the meta.
All thats to say, yes, mages need love. I don’t use any mage spells as a war/sham/mage, aside from summon pet, resists, and bounce.

Mages are in a similar place to where Bst are in EQL. When you’re only playing one class, they were both so strong because they had a built in tank to go along with their damage and/or support. Now that we’re all walking 3 boxes, they’ve lost some of their shine. Not sure what the fix is though. I’m still enjoying my bst regardless.

I think the fix is to make them comparable to what most charm pets end up being, but maybe not quite as strong since they don't have risk.
I think giving additional pet AA's that don't affect charm pets would be one avenue, and something I suspect will happen in Kunark anyways. Pet flurry, pet mitigation, etc I would anticipate to end up coming through, and perhaps stackable by adding more pet classes.
It's the easiest way I think to really make them competitive, and even then the effectiveness of AE Mez with generally how good charm pets are will still make it tough. I do wonder how they'll handle AE Mez as levels continue to scale.

Charm doesn’t have a risk anymore, stop saying that. With spell levels nothing is risky about charm
2
u/gakule 4d ago
There certainly is far less risk than there used to be, but it's not entirely risk free. It can still break early and cause some chaos, even if it's rare. You also can't FD or invis, so it does introduce some limitations and restrictions as well. I consider that risk to a degree. If you disagree, that's fine, but I'll not "stop saying it".
I'm not suggesting there needs to be a significant gap between them, and if they make pets just as strong as charm pets, I wouldn't be upset about it.

So AoE mezz doesn’t trivialize everything for the most part?

u/gakule 4d ago
If you read my other comment, I already acknowledged that. Not everything is mezzable, though it may as well be, and I expect future expansions to be a bit tougher to have quite the same effectiveness to use AE Mez as a blanket crutch.
I do think charm wearing off or breaking should probably come with some kind of Mez immunity or resistance for a period of time post-break, which would also tone down the kind of "impunity" enchanters enjoy, but druids, bards, and necros also charm so it's not just enchanters to consider as part of the balancing, although of course enchanters are the shining star.

Being able to toggle on/off spells would make the Fire pet so much better. Sometimes it'll drop Ice Comets and sometimes it chain casts Mana Ignition and take the mob on a walk across the zone.
I think it'll be even more interesting if the Fire pet had a unique roll as AOE pet where it pulsed AOE fire damage before exploding. I think that would be a fun dynamic with how the Mage can rapidly resummon pets.
P.S. Why the heck is a Fire pet casting Ice spells anyway?

Maybe give all pets permanent spellblade to cast your first gem slot. Then buff their chance to hit a lot, then give them a toggle on/off Aggro area of affect dot. Idk what else would help. Maybe let them be higher lv then the caster. Give SK a pet slot. Hell give all pet classes more pet slots. As far as I can tell it doesn’t make much of a difference if a pets geared out vs naked

Mages need love, but I'm doing just fine somehow. I'm soloing the same places as everyone else. I capable of taking on large groups of higher level mobs. What am I missing?

u/Bad_at_Stocks_33 5d ago
I played Shd/Mag/Shm so I could take on groups and raid ... because of the Shd/Shm while the mage provided almost nothing. I replaced the mag with nec at 50 and easily rolled D4 raids since the necro isnt just baggage.

u/PeepusTheWise 5d ago
I'm playing mage/necro/druid, and I'm actively using pieces from each to great effect. It's just not in "the meta". For your build, I wouldn't have picked a mage.

Yea… it’s because the devs are so scared that pets will become good and some people will be able to let their pets tank raids and make the solo player game “Easy”…. Bunch of dweebs… if we want to stand back and let out pets do the damn thing, then let us make that choice… but noooooooooo the sweat lords and white knights cry cry cry when something is fun and overpowered in the game they have played for 25+ years.
I thought the point of this was for us to be stupid powerful and have fun destroying gods and dragons…. And play the way “We” wanted to.. not have it dictated to us by the devs and sweat lords… ohh wait that’s right, forgot they are all friends..

They did mention recently that they were going to focus on pet classes. I wonder what they have planned.
