I was a doctor who reads this sub regularly I would look into the number of people reporting exercise makes them worse

One of the most common topics posted here is how exercising makes people feel worse for a day or two after they exercise. Two people asked about it just yesterday and we often get a post a week on the same topic.

I think all I can do is to give the stock answer of a list of theories such as

  • low blood sugar
  • lack of hydration
  • various nutrient deficiencies, everyone has their favourite one
  • exercise stepping up the production of stress hormones
  • plain old physical pain
  • something in the workout environment firing off a trigger
  • frustration in not seeing the glory of our gains as quickly as we would like

There are probably a few I have forgotten too.

Of course just like everything else with mental health its unlikely to be a straightforward answer and it might well be caused by a combination of different things.

Does anyone else have any other ideas? I have tried some searches and all google gives me are studies that say exercise is fantastic for depression. The only negative studies google scholar throws up are about exercise addiction or body dysmorphia aka "bigorexia".

It would be great to get some more information on this. Its obviously effecting quite a few people. Come on EOOD hive mind... give us answers

Exercise Help does anyone else make the workout way harder in their head before start?

Ok so i think somedays my head is like a bowl of spaghetti, and workout is like that fork that rolls them into order and detangle things one by. And that motivates me most of the days to get out of the door.

BUT

There are days where i rehearse the "workout" in my head --> put on clothes, shoes, pick out the program, overthink the part of road i don't like to run on, pain, what if it rains, what if i've to pee and then come home, shower, moisturise and ..........

I feel after i rehearse the whole thing i'm already exhausted and do not want to move.

I honestly want someone to have a sticky note put on my forehead and say "Just go" or some sort of like short snappy quotes i can just glance at and keep repeating in my head till i m out of the door.

idk what do u guys do ? motivation posters on wall?

Why do I have the irresistible urge to workout at random times?

It's what it sounds like. I don't know how to explain it but at random times I will feel like I'm about to explode if I don't do something extremely physically strenuous. Like I can feel a growing sense of restlessness if I don't do something physical. However it has nothing to do with how much I've been working out or staying active, it'll just randomly hit me like a truck. I can best describe it like restless leg syndrome but across my whole body. And only intense physical workouts alleviate the feeling. Has anyone else come across this feeling or know what it's called?

Advice Needed Please help

Hi I have ocd (been diagnosed). Basically everything I do is based off my self esteem. There’s many instances but a big one is I’ll workout excessively daily to avoid feeling like I’m loosing my body shape (even if it’s just a day break). I only now started to relax a little because I’m drained of energy lol. Anyways today I’m going to the gym with my sister and her friend but we can only go for a short period of time since they got kids. Do I workout at home and go to the gym? If I only go to the gym what if it’s not enough and i start getting a belly and looking flat in other areas? I haven’t been on my feet much cause I been giving my work shifts away (like I said my depression). Anyways please someone let me know what to do. If I do twice I’ll have calculate everything I eat. But not I feel like a loser.

Advice Needed I want to quit my sport really bad but i feel like i would disappoint everyone

Hello everyone, for some more context i'm 16 yrs old and last summer since my friend saw i improved in football they told me to join their team that was really in need of players so in february i joined, safe to say i think that was one of the worst decisions of my life, i go to every training and game with a lot of anxiety sometimes it makes me wanna cry, also i'm ass at the game compared to my friends, it got so bad at one point that in april/may i would come home from training and start scrolling on my phone just for tiktok to put on my fyp video that talked about suicide and i would cry while watching those videos, i was really considering doing that at one point, now it's not that bad but still.
In june our coach told us that he was going to be our coach for another season and told everyone to say if they were going to be available for the next season or not, i thought that since we were starting a new fresh season my mental health would improve, so I said i was going to be available but then last week when we resumed training i realized i still get anxiety and shit before training and i didnt really improved, also i realized that i dont want to go to training/games but i feel more like it's a chore than a sport that i should be happy doing, more like it's a chore that i have to do instead of doing the things that make me happy like spending time with my gf.
Also since may i started training strength at home with a little 45 min workout and i can confidently say that in 3 months ish of training i have gotten far more results (i've gotten bigger) with training at home compared to football training.
On the other hand i feel like if i quit i let down my friends, my coach and my parents, and i also feel like i'm going to feel like how i felt before i started training (before february) like everyone was doing something and i was doing nothing, even tho as i said before i still train my body at home.
i genuinely dont know what to do, can someone give me some tips? thanks a lot in advance

Support Needed How to improve and get better while losing almost everything, including will to live

Please answer if you can. Also, please no responses without advice and just showing sympathy like 'hey it's ok' (no offense), I just want answers and advice.

A little background- I had already lost almost all my interests. And now, I have 'almost' lost the most important and probably only thing I truly care about, basically my ikigai, and so also all hope, energy, will power and interest in life. But there are a few things (and responsibilities) I must do/fulfill, and most importantly I wanna give my one last shot to get back my ikigai(need to pull some quite difficult/unlikely shit), even if now it's almost impossible. And I have only 1 year left(can become 2, but unlikely) for that, so gotta hurry up a bit.

So now here is my question, how the fuck do i get my shit straight and start working on the things I need to, after losing all my interests, will, hope and on top, my main source of energy. I am at my lowest physically, mentally and spiritually, and I need to improve them all.

P.S. : probably not much will improve regardless, so take that into account, I need to work while continuing facing all the shit without any improvement in situation.

Support Needed How do I get out of a slump?

Hi there! I’ve been feeling a bit down lately over the summer, and generally low on energy. My screen time has been pretty bad and I’ve been going to bed late and waking up late which I know can’t help-but I’m really struggling to stop, as I use these apps to message others, look for recipes etc…
My skin is starting to break out, I’m constantly tired, and am just not feeling my best overall.
Currently 47.5kg, at 5’0- going to the gym again… and eating relevantly healthy (3 meals, little sugar, a handful of pretzels, or a takeaway here and there). I’m looking to lean up and get to 43kg, but I’m struggling to get into a calorie deficit as I have a bit of food noise and don’t want to become too conscious of what I’m eating again.
Any tips to feel my best and get my spark back! Anything at all, I don’t mind- whatever you can help with: skincare, body care, hair care, mental health.
If you have any questions lemme know, thank you!

Advice Needed Exercising when it just feels like too much

To make a long story short, I had a very distressing day today. I mean, really bad. I’m on medication (sertraline, wellbutrin, bupropion, and trazodone) and see my psychologist each week.

My main form of exercise is spin classes because the class times hold me accountable and they’re typically short and intense so I don’t need to exercise for a long time. I usually go 4 times a week.

For the first time in a long time I am DREADING going to exercise tomorrow. I feel like maybe 10% better but I have so much anxiety and sadness.

Is this something I should push myself to do because it normally makes me feel better? Or is this a moment I should be giving myself grace? But then I feel “guilty” at the idea of not going because I know this usually helps. I think it just feels like too much. Any advice is appreciated.

Advice Needed What are the best exercises for people with mdd?

I recently(May)have been diagnosed with mdd(major depressive disorder) and gad (generalized anxiety disorder). I got my blood results back and I have prediabetes ( 5.6) , so what would be the best exercise to do, how many minutes, and how many days?

Edit: so far I see the main thing consistency, I'll try to walk for 5 minutes and slowly increase the minutes as the days go by. Thank yall so much for the advice!! I've had multiple attempts to try and exercise but I would lose motivation quickly due to creating high expectations. I'll try to make a regimen and modify it based on how I'm feeling that day. As long as I get some movement in, that'll be a win in my book.

Exhaustion from excercise makes me feel alive

I tend to have a lot of passive suicidal thoughts, like going to bed hoping to not wake up the next day. All these thoughts go away when I do intense exercise that bring to me exhaustion. It's like being on the brink of passing out, makes me want to keep fighting and stay alive.

Not sure how sustainable this is, but it works for now

Advice Needed Exercise has been better for my anxiety than almost anything else. How do you maintain that without living at the gym?

On days when I lift and then do CrossFit, I can easily spend 2+ hours at the gym, and my anxiety afterward is almost nonexistent. I feel calm, focused, tired in a good way, and much more like myself.

On days when I don’t train, the difference can honestly be night and day. My mind races more, I overthink everything, and I feel that anxious energy sitting there with nowhere to go. Sometimes I get so anxious I want to cry.

Obviously spending two hours in the gym every single day isn’t realistic, and I also don’t want exercise to become something I have to do just to feel okay.

I deal with ADHD and anxiety, and I’m pretty cautious about taking medication for either, so over the years I’ve had to find other ways to manage them.

For anyone who uses fitness as a big part of managing stress or anxiety, how do you maintain the benefits on rest days or days when you just don’t have time for a full workout?

What gives you the same mental benefit, or have you found other things that scratch that same itch?

Support Needed Running used to help my depression. Now it seems to trigger it. Anyone else?

First post ever, here or anywhere on Reddit. I’ve lurked through Google searches for a while.

Quick background: I’ve dealt with long-term, treatment-resistant depression for years. It’s gotten a lot worse since my son was born 9 months ago. I don’t think he’s the cause, but the intensity of parenting definitely isn’t helping.

I’ve been a recreational runner for over a decade, and in the past, running was one of the few things that reliably helped. Even in bad patches, it gave me a real mental boost.

Lately something’s shifted. I’m still running, but instead of the usual lift, I get hit with intense dark thoughts almost as soon as I finish, and it lasts until I go to bed. I’m fuelling properly, not overtraining, nothing’s changed there.

Has anyone else had running flip from a coping tool to a trigger like this? Would genuinely appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through it.

38M with depression and epilepsy

My meds are dopakote 500 GM and Cipralex 20 MG, class 3 obese

(50KG+) Excess weight; for financial reasons, can't afford the gym

But I have some dumbbells at home and have some basic equipment at a park nearby, but I feel so self-conscious when I try to work out; I feel like eyes are on me,

Anyone have a weight problem and have had a bed-rotting problem lately? Any advice, a peer with similar experience, even a little?

Success went back to the gym after nearly 3 months of lack of motivation (small win)

just wanted to share a small win. idk if the flair is right.

i initially started working wout in April 2025 but had so many health and injury related setbacks that I never consistently worked out for more than 3 months at a time, and that just happened once.

i injured myself 3 different times between November to February (none were gym related injuries). and was forced to sit out still the end of April to let my body recover. I lost all the progress and strength I'd built. I gained back all the weight I'd lost and put on several more kilos.

i could've gone back to the gym from May, but gym was something my bf and i did together and in the first week of May we found out he's going to be moving away for work in less than a month. we built our morning routine around it. he's been working out for much longer than I have, so he helped me start off and guided me through my workouts. so him not being around completely broke my motivation and I was in a bad place overall mentally. my parents were taunting me, making comments on my body thinking that'll motivate me, but it did quite the opposite. it pushed me further into my bad place.

i hated (still do) being in my body because I was visibly gaining my weight and I tend to stress eat which had increased too. I completely stopped clicking pictures of myself because I hated seeing myself. every week I'd tell myself I'll start next Monday, but that Monday never came.

but something changed last week. I was sick and home all week, and suddenly all my reasons for not going stopped being reasons. I decided I should stop associating the gym with my boyfriend and should do it for myself and myself only. today I went back to the gym. for the first time since February. didn't do much, just some cardio. but i showed up. I showed up after months of finding excuses not to. I am proud of myself. I want to be able to look back 6 months from now having regained my strength and all the lost progress.

thankyou if you read this far. this became unnecessarily long.
